Seagate Announces two new 1TB Drives

Seagate has unveiled two new hard drive lines that both offer a maximum 1TB capacity: the Barracuda 7200.11 (consumer) and the Barracuda ES.2 (enterprise). Expect both to arrive sometime this quarter and note that Seagate prices the consumer 1TB HDD at an MSRP of $399. As with other Seagate drives, the new Barracuda 7200.11 and ES.2 come with five year warranties.

Seagate packs the 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 with 32MB of L2 cache, SATA 3.0Gbps and native command queuing support. The Barracuda 7200.11 makes use of four 250GB platters with second-generation perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The company claims the new Barracuda 7200.11 can sustain a 105MB/s data rate and only draws 8-watts during idle as well as 11.6-watts during seek. Acoustically, the Barracuda 7200.11 generates around 27-to-29 decibels of noise during idle and seeking tasks. Seagate also offers the Barracuda 7200.11 in 750GB (three platters) and 500GB (two platters) sizes with the same 32MB buffer and PMR technology.

Seagate's new Barracuda ES.2 models are offered with serial attached SCSI, or SAS, interfaces. Seagate has also raised the MTBF rating of the Barracuda ES.2 to 1.2 million hours, up 200 thousand hours from the previous Barracuda ES.

Nvidia Announces GeForce 7200 GS

Nvidia has announced the GeForce 7200 GS, a card that delivers Vista Premium Ready graphics performance for a mere $50. NVIDIA touts full support for DirectX 9.0, shader model 3.0 and high dynamic-range with the entry-level card. The G72 graphics core, clocked at 450 MHz, is essentially a crippled GeForce 7300-series core: half the pipelines. This brings the total pixel pipelines to two, each with one texture unit. PureVideo video processing is also supported; however, NVIDIA is unclear if the GeForce 7200 GS supports PureVideo HD for high-definition video decoding acceleration.

Add-in board manufacturers are free to equip GeForce 7200 GS graphics cards with 128MB or 256MB of DDR2 memory attached to the GPU via a 64-bit memory interface. NVIDIA recommends 800 MHz for GeForce 7200 GS graphics cards. GeForce 7200 GS based graphics cards will be available to OEMs, system builders and retail. NVIDIA add-in board partners with GeForce 7200 GS products include Albatron, ASUS, Biostar, ECS, EVGA, Foxconn, Galazy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, Palit, Point of View, PNY Technology, SPARKLE, XFX, Zogis and Zotac.

Try, try again: Seagate issues a second fix for 7200.11 hard drives

Seagate Technologies spokesperson Michael L. Hall gave Betanews an update this afternoon on the company's situation with its Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives, which have been failing in record numbers. Hall acknowledged that some units manufactured up until last month do have an issue where data is rendered inaccessible after power-up, and went on to acknowledge that the company's initial fix for the problem only made matters worse.

"While we believe that the vast majority of customers will not experience any disruption related to this issue, as part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, Seagate is offering a free firmware upgrade to proactively address those with potentially affected products," Hall stated. "This new firmware upgrade corrects compatibility issues that occurred with the firmware download provided on our support Web site on Jan. 16. We regret any inconvenience that the firmware issues have caused our customers."..

Seagate firmware update bricks 500GB HDDs

Just days since Seagate released a firmware update for a range of hard drives, which were hit by firmware bugs, Tom's Hardware reports that things don't look much brighter for hard drive giant Seagate. This time the problem is with the SD1A firmware update, for the 500GB hard drives in the 7200.11 series, which many unhappy customers have said completely bricks the hard drive. The problem lies in the firmware update, which causes the drive to freeze up. As far as un-bricking the devices goes, there has been little success. Some have claimed that downgrading the firmware has fixed the problems, for the moment.

Seagate plans SSD, 2TB hard drive for next year

Seagate will introduce its first SSD (solid-state drive) storage and 2TB hard drive next year, company CEO Bill Watkins said.

The company's first SSD product will be targeted at enterprises that need speedy storage and can afford to pay a premium for the expensive drives. Seagate has no plans to release SSD drives for consumers as the high prices could deter them for the next few years, Watkins said in an interview.

The release date and price information for the 2TB hard drive were not available. Seagate released 1TB hard drives, the Barracuda 7200.11 and Barracuda ES.2, in the middle of 2007.

Seagate: Vista OS requires 250GB to 1TB of storage

Looking to change computer storage from a commodity to competitive differentiator, hard drive manufacturer Seagate Technology LLC launched a new set of tools today to help its channel partners change the way they take storage to market.

The vendor sees an increasing demand for storage driven primarily by two trends: the increased storage demands of the Windows Vista operating system and the advent of the digital pack rat, who stores ever-increasing amounts of songs, pictures and videos.

Consequently says Pete Steege, Seagate's senior marketing manager, storage is playing an increasingly larger role for system builders.

"We're seeing a couple of trends in the market adding up to real opportunity for solution providers that we're taking advantage of," said Steege.

The hard drive has gone from an afterthought, says Steege, to the heart of the machine. Calling Vista the "poster child for storage" he says users need 250GB to 1TB of storage to fully leverage the operating system. And with the need for backup, that becomes 500GB to 2TB. Seagate's offering in this higher-end space is the Barracuda 7200.11, its new 1TB drive.

The storage firm points out its the single largest hard drive capacity bump in the last 50 years.

As the name suggests, the HDD spins at 7,200RPM. The 3Gb/s SATA I interface has a sustained data rate of up to 120MB/s.

Terabyte Hard Drives Show Stellar Performance

Its the era of the terabyte. That era really launched back in May when Hitachi delivered its 7K1000 terabyte hard drive. Dell, CompUSA Gear Up For Vista Launch

With more than 100,000 hours invested in testing and validating Microsoft's Windows Vista, Dell specialists believe they are ready for the business launch of the new operating system on Thursday. "We're ready to work with individual consumers or large enterprises," said Russ Ray, a senior manager in Dell's client operating system product marketing unit as he described the hardware manufacturer's game plan for the launch of Vista. "The smaller they are, the easier it is. We're finding that everybody is interested in getting his hands on it."

Dell, which says it accounts for more than 10 percent of Microsoft's business, said customers with volume licensing agreements with Microsoft can use Dell to factory-install Vista after they have provided their Windows Vista image. In extensive pre-launch testing of Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange Server 2007 with its customers, Dell has found that the ideal PC hardware configuration should grow to take advantage of the advanced functions included in the Microsoft products.

A typical Vista-based configuration should have 2-GB of RAM, a 256-MB memory card, a 7200 RPM hard disk and a dual core processor from AMD or Intel, according to Dell. In particular, the processor requirements represent a new departure for Dell; for years the firm was in a monogamous relationship with Intel, which was the sole supplier of its processors. In recent months, however, Dell has added AMD as a processor supplier.
