Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP

Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.

After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

Paul Thurrott's Windows Vista Review update

It's hard to put Windows Vista in perspective. On the one hand, the product has been in development for over five years, which means that Vista had one of the longest development cycles in the 20+ year history of Windows.

My Office 12 Review

A few weeks ago the Microsoft Office team worked hard to get Beta 1 out of the door to beta testers via Microsoft Beta. This build was quite successful in all products of Office.

Unfortunately, Microsoft Office ?12? does not come with a new product but the same products that have many changes will keep testers busy until Beta 2! During the Beta phase of Office 2003, Code-named ?Office 11? and referred to as NGO (Next Generation of Office), brought new applications to the table. These applications were InfoPath and OneNote.

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Review

A Little History
Virtualization software is nothing new, and dates back quite some time. One of the most popular examples for the end user was Connectix Virtual PC for the Mac. Since there are a pretty huge number of programs that are only available on Windows, this created a strong market niche to let Mac users run Windows programs, even if at reduced speed.

Virtual PC for the Mac, rather than emulating Windows, emulated the x86 architecture and the requisite peripheral devices, such as a video and sound card. This meant that emulation could work quite flawlessly, but also that any user would need to purchase a copy of Windows as well and then install it onto the Virtual PC. Virtual PC was a success and Connectix later created a Windows version which let you run most x86 OSes ? something quite useful for developers, enthusiasts, and IT professionals.

Windows 7 build 7077 leaks

According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079

Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758 and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft hinted at a May public release for the RC.

1up Pulls Neverwinter Nights 2 Review

Seems the overly negative review of Neverwinter Nights 2 over at 1up didn't sit to well with the members. But that begs the question, why pull a review because it was negative? 1up says it was because the review didn't live up to their "editorial standards" which can be taken many ways. Was it because everyone thought the review was way, way to negative? Or was it because 1up got hate mail due to the negative review? Who knows. All I know is that 1up actually pulled a review - which I don't think I've ever seen happen before with an online review from a major gaming site. The original review gave Neverwinter Nights 2 a 5/10 score, and it was pretty obvious the reviewer didn't care for the D&D rules or world. Plus, as has been said, it was poorly written. Or was it?

Did 1up do the right thing by pulling the review? Should the review have not been pulled? What does that say about a negative reaction to a review in general, if it is so negative it might get pulled by the company? What do you guys think?

You can read the original review here on the Bioware forums.

Insider confirms anonymous Windows 7 M1 review, writes thesis on Windows 7 development

Long Zheng: Hot on the heels of the humble Windows 7 Milestone 1 review at Neowin yesterday, an anonymous commenter appropriately named “MSBob” on this blog who appears as a Microsoft insider has wrote a fairly extensive comment essay confirming the authenticity of that review as well as revealing many other details about the current and future state of Windows 7.

There’s a lot of detail from the design of Windows 7, to the development teams, Windows Live integration strategies and of course the man, the legend, Steven Sinofsky who’s influencing the release cycles of Windows. And don’t forget Calculator, Paint and Notepad.

Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100

Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the latest build internally at the time of writing.

Microsoft says Vista adoption is about 2% in enterprise

Microsoft's John Curran, head of the Windows Client Group, said that a survey by Computer Business Review found 2% of UK enterprises have upgraded to Vista, is roughly where Microsoft pegs current adoption in the enterprise too.

Computer Business Review (CBRonline.com) found in a survey of 300 senior decision-makers in the UK that 2% of enterprises had already upgraded their desktops to Windows Vista.

"Those numbers are consistent with how we would see it so far in our core markets like the US, UK, and so on," Curran said.

Windows on Netbook PCs: A Year in Review

Its hard to believe its been a year since we first started to see netbook PCs running Windows come to market.

Little did we know that these devices would evolve so much in such a short time. A year ago, they were Internet-centric devices defined mainly by their tiny size and low cost. An interesting concept perhaps, but sales didnt really take off until the category evolved into the more capable small notebook PCs we see on the market today...

Neowin Review: Fence your desktop with Stardock Fences

Windows Desktop - A place where every installed application likes to place a shortcut and also a place to hold all your shortcuts and favorites. Things can become very messy when you have lots of desktop icons, like mine below: Well, there's not that many on my desktop, but I still place them in categories. Microsoft Office Apps all reside together and Windows Live Apps reside together. Each time I bring a new shortcut to my desktop, Windows places them in a separate order which it thinks to be right and then I move that shortcut icon to its appropriate group.
