Windows 7: Some Changes Since Beta for the RC

Steven Sinofsky: Building on the previous post that looked at the broad view of feedback, we want to start posting on the feedback and the engineering actions weve taken in responding to the feedback. We wont be able to cover all the changes (as were still busy making them), but for today we wanted to start with a sampling of some of the more visible changes. Were still on the same path working towards the release candidate and of course we know everyone is anxious for the next phase of our path to RTM. In the meantime, our full time machines are still running the Beta build.

Microsoft: Update on Windows 7 UAC issues

Before getting into the actual news, lets take a while to understand the current Windows 7 UAC dilemma Windows 7 UAC Dilemma As Windows 7 was receiving much positive feedback than expected from the beta testers, we had Long Zheng and Rafael, two Windows enthusiasts, come with a proof that malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7. Later Microsoft responded insisting that this is by design and actually not a bug. Later, again, we had Zheng and Rafael come out with a second flaw which showed Windows 7 UAC was still flawed. At this time, everybody thought Microsoft had done the right thing with Windows Vista UAC and compromised security over consumers' feedback in Windows 7.

Messenger 9.0 Beta to close by end of month

Mess.be: Today we, and probably everyone else who is an official BETA tester for the 9.0 client, has received an e-mail from Microsoft about the recent BETA program. According to the e-mail, over 1000 bugs and suggestions have been posted, and well over 5000 messages on the newsgroups! The e-mail continues to explain the long (unusual) silence over the past few months:

"For the past several months we've been gathering feedback from not only you, but also from past beta testers' comments, other external Windows Live Messenger customers, and Microsoft employees. We've compiled a thorough list of feedback, and it's now time to shift our focus to building the new version of Windows Live Messenger. Therefore, on June 24, we will close the official beta testing program.".

The Messenger team looks dedicated to taking a look at all the bugs and suggestions which have been posted so far, promising to have process them all by the end of the week.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta

Microsoft has detailed its plans to release a public beta of its Windows Home Server Power Pack.

The update will include a fix for the data corruption issues that have plagued the OS since its release.

In a message to potential testers the company said:

"Due to the nature of the shared folder data corruption bug (KB #946676) a broad beta test program with sufficient time for feedback is required. The time line for a final release will depend on this feedback and testing, in order to deliver a fix of the highest quality. To meet our goals for the beta test we need the number of beta testers who are actively using and testing the Power Pack 1 beta to ramp up very quickly"

The company is asking for anyone currently using Home Server to sign up to the beta to ensure the data corruption issue is fixed.

Windows Live Messenger Managed Beta Ends

A few minutes ago, Microsoft sent a very special e-mail message to all Windows Live Messenger Managed Beta testers, which marks the end of the program. The e-mail message mentions a few of the improved areas in Windows Live Messenger and of course, thanks all beta-testers for their bug reporting and such.

Quote:

Dear Windows Live Messenger Beta Tester,

As we get closer to the final release of Windows Live Messenger 8.0, it is time that the managed beta come to a close. Thank you for all your wonderful contributions to this beta and for putting the voice of the customer into our best version of Messenger yet. Here are few of the many areas where your feedback made a difference:

-Improved sign-in performance. Thanks to your feedback, Windows Live Messenger 8.0 has the fastest sign-in of any version of Messenger.
-New UI and color changing. After many tries, your feedback helped us "get it right."
-Great new features such as Sharing Folders, Offline IM and Live Contacts. You found many great bugs that improved the quality of each of these.
-Overall quality. Your relentless testing and reporting of memory leaks, crashes and UI glitches greatly improved this version of Messenger.

Five things every Windows beta tester should know

Ed Bott: A few Windows 7 beta testers (and some high-profile pundits) are working themselves into a lather over the perceived shortage of feedback from Microsoft. Ive read many of the complaints, public and private, and I think some beta testers need a refresher course in the basics of what it means to be involved in the development of a product as complex as Windows.

The Windows Live team wants your wish lists

It is not ordinary for Microsoft to request feedback in the following fashion, but kudos to the Windows Live team for asking online communities to send their feedback directly to their e-mail inbox. Kent Compton, a Product Planner for Windows Live, is seeking everyone's feedback. Before we get into the announcement, we have a few things to point out to our readers. Your suggestions are going to be listened to, however don't get your hopes up by suggesting a plethora of features and expect them to deliver in the next version of Windows Live. We can tell you that Windows Live Wave 4 is already in development.
