Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. 11.12.2007How to request features in Microsoft products
Laurentiu Cristofor: I want to address the topic of requesting feature changes in Microsoft products, to point to some tools that can help, and to
describe ways to use those tools more effectively. This post is based on my experience working on customer requests while being a member of the
Microsoft SQL Server team, but you may find the information I provide here useful for other Microsoft products than SQL Server.
So, basically, the problem I am discussing here is that you are working on some project using Microsoft technology and you find out that your work
might be much easier if only some feature would be available. How can you ask Microsoft to add that feature to their product? One way to do this is to
contact technical support, but there are other ways that I want to address here.

08.02.2008Windows 7 Feature Request List Leaks Out
Although the Vista transition is far from complete, that doesn't mean Microsoft isn't already hard at work on Windows 7, the next version of the
venerable operating system - and this list of user-requested features unearthed by the folks at Neowin might hold some clues as to the future.
The "wish list" was sent out by Microsoft before Windows 7 development even began, so most of these features probably aren't
even on the radar, but what's most interesting is that seemingly small fixes like "Window Update progress indicator" vastly outnumber big-ticket
items like "integrated audio / video codec manager" and "Windows 'Game' Mode."

13.11.2007Windows XP gets another stay of execution
Microsoft has extended the final OEM and reseller delivery date for the Windows XP from January 31, 2009 to May 30, 2009. The cut off date for PC
makers to obtain licenses for the software was January 31, 2009. Still, vendors have to place their orders before the official cutoff date of January
31, but they dont have to take delivery until May. Microsoft granted the reprieve largely because of customer's preference for XP. Microsoft also
recently extended the Vista "downgrade" deadline for OEMs to July 31 and netbooks and low-cost laptops will be able to run XP until at least June
2010, so chances are you'll be able to get XP until Windows 7 ships.

25.03.2009FastCGI Extension for Internet Information Services 6.0
The FastCGI Extension for IIS 6.0 enables popular application frameworks that support FastCGI protocol to be hosted on the IIS web server in a
high-performance and reliable way. FastCGI provides a high-performance alternative to the Common Gateway Interface (CGI), a standard way of
interfacing external applications with Web servers that has been supported as part of the IIS feature-set since the very first release.
CGI programs are executables launched by the web server for each request in order to process the request and generate dynamic responses that
are sent back to the client. Because many of these frameworks do not support multi-threaded execution, CGI enables them to execute reliably on IIS by
executing exactly one request per process. Unfortunately, it provides poor performance due to the high cost of starting and shutting down a process
for each request.
FastCGI addresses the performance issues inherent to CGI by providing a mechanism to reuse a single process
over and over again for many requests. Additionally, FastCGI maintains compatibility with non-thread-safe libraries by providing a pool of reusable
processes and ensuring that each process will only handle one request at a time.

04.03.2009Vista Speech Recognition Hole
Microsoft has
confirmed an issue with the Windows
Vista Speech Recognition
feature.
An issue
has been identified publicly
where an attacker could use
the speech recognition
capability of Windows Vista to
cause the system to take
undesired actions. While this
is possible there are a number
of factors that make this
"attack" very hard to pull
off.
In order for
the attack to be successful,
the targeted system would need
to have the speech recognition
feature previously activated
and configured. Additionally
the system would need to have
speakers and a microphone
installed and turned on. The
exploit scenario would involve
the speech recognition feature
picking up commands through
the microphone such as
"copy", "delete",
"shutdown", etc. and acting
on them. These commands would
be coming from an audio file
that is being played through
the speakers. Of course this
would be heard and the actions
taken would be visible to the
user if they were in front of
the PC during the attempted
exploitation. It is not
possible through the use of
voice commands to get the
system to perform privileged
functions such as creating a
user without being prompted by
UAC for Administrator
credentials. The UAC prompt
cannot be manipulated by voice
commands by default. There
are also additional barriers
that would make an attack
difficult including speaker
and microphone placement,
microphone feedback, and the
clarity of the dictation.
The flaw is being
regarded by many as a non
issue.

22.07.2009Internet Explorer is now an optional feature in Windows 7
Along with various other changes that are to be reflected in Windows 7 RC, here is a big change that is not in the list. From Windows 7 build 7048,
Internet Explorer(IE) is an optional Windows feature and can be installed/uninstalled from Windows 7. This will be a welcoming (and surprising) news,
especially to European Union and Opera who have accused Microsoft for not giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers. If IE is upgraded to
version 8 in Vista (from version 7), users do get an option to uninstall IE 8, but not IE 7. IE 7 remains as integral component of Windows Vista which
cannot be removed.

04.03.2009Firefox 3 gets full-page zoom
The much-anticipated page zoom
feature has finally landed in
Firefox 3
nightly builds. Firefox 3
will now be able to zoom the
entire page, including images
as well as text, just like
Opera and IE 7.
The page zoom feature
request was originally filed
in Bugzilla in 1999, but
implementation was delayed
because it wasn't considered
practical in Gecko 1.8, the
current version of Firefox's
HTML rendering engine.
Scheduled for inclusion in
Firefox 3, the new version of
the rendering engineGecko
1.9leverages the open source
Cairo vector graphics
rendering framework and
includes a number of extremely
significant improvements to
layout and rendering. The page
zoom feature was implemented
as part of the Gecko overhaul
and will now be included in
Firefox 3.
Although the page zoom
feature is fully implemented,
the user interface doesn't
expose the page zoom
functionality to the end user
yet. Until menu items, toolbar
buttons, or keyboard shortcuts
are added to facilitate access
to the page zoom feature, most
users probably won't be able
to make much use of the new
feature.

03.09.2009Mark Russinovich takes an indepth look at Vista's User Account Control
Mark takes a deep dive
into UAC in the June issue of

UAC’s technologies make it

a standard user, including
when and how Windows uses file

User
Account Control (UAC) is an
often misunderstood feature in

UAC solves and describe the

component technologies. These
technologies include the
refactoring of operations that
previously required

lightweight virtualization to
help programs run correctly
without administrative rights,
the ability for programs to
explicitly request
administrative rights, and
isolation of administrative
processes from
non-administrative processes
