Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.
First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

Three Republican U.S. senators on Thursday called on Congress to pass a permanent Internet tax ban before a moratorium expires Nov. 1.
The current Internet tax moratorium, which Congress has extended twice since 1998, bans taxes on Internet access, as well as other taxes
unique to the Internet. It's important for Congress to pass a permanent ban soon before state and local governments begin to tax Internet access,
said Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican.
Those who wonder what impact Internet taxes could have should look to U.S.
telephone and mobile phone bills, where taxes are up to 20 percent of the cost, McCain said. "We cannot allow that to happen to the Internet --
likely the most popular invention since the light bulb," McCain said at a press conference.
Several senators, many of them
former state governors, have opposed a permanent extension of the tax ban. Earlier this year, Senators Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, and
Tom Carper, a Delaware Democrat, introduced a bill that would narrow the moratorium's definition of Internet access and extend the ban for four
years. That bill would close what supporters have called a loophole allowing telecom providers to argue that voice and other services bundled with
Internet service shouldn't be taxed. ..

Several U.S. senators
questioned whether to extend a
ban on access and other
Internet-only taxes, which
expires on November 1.
Representatives of Verizon and
the National Taxpayer Union
Foundation called on Congress
to make the tax ban permanent,
but several senators said the
current ban could allow
Internet service providers to
package other products with
access and exempt them from
taxes. Three groups
representing state government
officials called for a more
limited, temporary ban.
Several senators said
they would support a temporary
ban on Internet access taxes,
but only if language in the
moratorium is changed to make
clear that states are allowed
to tax services packaged with
access, including music and
movies and IPTV. The original
Internet tax ban, which went
into effect in October 1998,
said that access and
" other services as part of
a package services offered to
consumers " may be exempt
from taxes. The last extension
of the ban, passed in 2004,
removed VoIP from the tax
ban.
Five other
senators introduced a bill,
called the Internet Tax
Freedom Extension Act, that
would extend the ban on
Internet access taxes another
four years while closing the
"loophole" that could allow
other bundled services to be
exempt from taxes. Three bills
introduced this year would
permanently extend the ban on
Internet-only taxes. But other
senators called for the tax
ban to be made permanent. If
the ban expires, consumers in
some U.S. cities could pay up
to an additional 30% and a
permanent ban would help with
Internet service providers'
plans to invest in new
services.

say they are not interested in

are not sure how to use it,
14% say using it at work meets
their need and 3% said the

homes. The study also found
U.S. broadband adoption grew
to 52% over 2006, up from 42%
in 2005. Roughly half of new
subscribers converted from
slower-speed, dial-up Internet
access while the other half of
households had no prior
access.

The ruling junta in Burma has cut internet access to citizens in an attempt to stop footage of pro-democracy protests escaping the country. Internet
cafés have been closed and the state ISP is claiming that a damaged cable has led to a total internet shutdown across the country, though the veracity
of this story is questionable at best. This move comes after the extensive filming of the latest protests on mobile phones and video cameras; the
movies have consequently been sent across the web, generating large amounts of negative press for the junta.
" They are going to delay
the message, but they are not going to stop it, " British journalist Dominic Faulder told Reuters. " This time, there will be more pictures and
they will come out. " Although Burma is subject to some of the strictest censorship in the world, images of the protests, including the beatings

20.06.2008A PC per child programme kicks off in UK
In September, Prime Minister Gordon Brown
announced details of a home access project allowing PC and internet access to families so that children can enhance their
learning at home.
The plan will see £300 million spent on providing computers and broadband internet to families. The Home Access
project will go nationwide next autumn and will ensure every 5- to 18-year-old has home access by 2011. Currently around a million children do have
access to broadband at home.
Schools Minister Jim Knight
detailed the steps which includes a year-long pilot scheme in Oldham and Suffolk. It will specifically target families that have
home broadband access but do not use the technology for their children’s benefit; can afford access but do not think technology has educational
value; cannot afford home access or need support in obtaining it.
Stephen Crowne, Chief Executive of Becta said "There's no question
that technology plays an increasing part of our everyday life at home and school. What we need to ensure is that every learner has an equal chance to
tap into the benefits of the internet to enhance their learning – and the Home Access programme seeks to do just that, by offering this
opportunity to all learners."
