Comparing executable files in Windows Server 2008 in Full and Core installs

Windows Server 2008 Server Core installation is a minimal install of the upcoming Windows Server OS that can run specific roles (like DNS, Active Directory or File Server) with a much smaller footprint and attack surface.

In a previous blog post I looked into overall image sizes for both and also discussed some of the details about the differences between these Full and the Core installs.

Now I am taking it one step further to look into the executable files in both installs. I will be presenting about this next Thursday and wanted to have a better feel for whats really the difference between the two. My findings are presented below, first with some overall counts and then looking at files by group (only in Core, in both, only in full).

Microsoft releases Viridian hypervisor along with Windows Server 2008 RC0

Virtualization.info has learned from trusted sources that this new version contains first preview version of new Microsoft hypervisor Windows Server Virtualization (WSV), codename Viridian.

As expected the hypervisor comes as a server role, but the surprising news is that virtualization role is available also for complete installations of Windows, not only Server Core one as originally stated by Microsoft.

This may change once started the beta program, but if it stays this way it may imply Microsoft is changing its plans for hypervisor integration, and may even consider embedding a specific version for desktop operating systems (e.g.: Vista).

Once activated the new role will reboot the machine in hypervisor mode, putting Windows operating system in the so called Parent Partition, as Viridian architecture implies.

If TAP customers have access to this preview it means general public will access beta 1 within the end of this year or early 2008.

Microsoft: Windows Server 2008 Not Delayed

Speculation has been growing in the media that Windows Server 2008, formerly codenamed "Longhorn," could be delayed past its release to manufacturing (RTM) date of the second half of 2007, and slip into 2008. Microsoft, on its Windows Server Division blog today, says "it just ain't so."

The very brief note reads in full: "Today we noticed a couple articles which have incorrectly speculated about a Windows Server 2008 delay. Actually, we remain fully on track for Windows Server 2008's release to manufacturing in the second half of 2007, with general availability following after that as usual."

Microsoft has given no more specific timetable for the new OS's release, but the name gives a hint that it will be released late in 2007 at the earliest. Windows Server 2008 is currently in beta 3 release, and is feature complete, according to Microsoft. ..

Windows Server 2008 R2 beta airs

Lost in the Windows 7 hype, Microsoft also released the beta of Windows Server 2008 R2, which is the companion to the client OS. The company is aligning Windows Server 2008 R2, which briefly was referred to as Windows Server 7, and the client OS Windows 7 although Microsoft officials have not said if they will ship together. But users who adopt both will get new security, network, and other features although some of those will require network upgrades like implementing IPv6. The R2 beta's integration with Windows 7 is high on the server's feature list.

2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet

Microsoft has recently switched its main website, www.microsoft.com to Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft-IIS/7.0

Although Windows Server 2008 is not yet released, Beta 3 is publicly available for early adopters to use. Internet Information Server 7 is already released, but will probably not see widespread use until Windows Server 2008 (formerly "Longhorn") is released, since it only runs on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

There are already around 2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet. Whilst some of the servers running Windows Server 2008 are at Microsoft itself, the majority are not, with developers and hosting companies taking advantage of Windows Server 2008's availability under a Go Live license which allows the beta to be used for testing or in a live environment without cost...

Some roles and features on Windows Server 2003 can be managed remotely by using Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 RC, although the Server Core installation option is not available with the Windows Server 2003 operating system.

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 7

Comparing running processes in Windows Server 2008 in Full and Core installs

Windows Server 2008 Server Core installation is a minimal install of the upcoming Windows Server OS that can run specific roles (like DNS, Active Directory or File Server) with a much smaller footprint and attack surface. In a previous blog post I looked into overall image sizes for both and also discussed some of the details about the differences between these Full and the Core installs. I later discussed which files are on disk for each one. Now I am looking at the processes running in the the two types of install.

This time I actually installed a couple of things on the servers before looking at them. First of all, I loaded the Virtual PC virtual machine extensions. Second, I loaded the DNS Server roles (which is available for both). I did not furter configure the servers, but used the systeminfo.exe and tasklist.exe (which also exists in both install) to compare the differences in loaded process, physical memory and pagefile memory used.

My goal here is not to have very precise lists, but to get a feeling for how the two installs compare. Also note that Windows Server 2008 is in pre-release format today (there is a public Beta 3 and an MSDN-and-TechNet-subscribers-o nly release called June CTP or IDS3). Keep in mind that this will most likely change before final release. The information here is based on an Enterprise edition, June CTP install.
