11.02.2008Microsoft to Release Windows Server 2008 RCO, Vista SP1 Beta
Microsoft will make the first release candidate for Windows Server 2008 and the first beta for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 available within the next
24 hours, the software maker announced today. Windows Server 2008 is intended to bring new technologies like server and presentation virtualization
capabilities, IIS 7, Server Core, PowerShell, Network Access Protection, Server Manager, and enhanced networking and clustering technologies; it has
been touted as the most "integrated" Windows to date.
Along with Windows Server 2008, MS will also be releasing the first beta of Vista
SP1 to a select group of 12,000 testers. The current plan is to release Vista SP1 to manufacturing in the first quarter of 2008. The beta focuses on
specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. Vista SP1 will be
very different from Windows XP SP2, which was all about security and broke a large number of applications, including some of Microsoft's own, as it
involved trade-offs around application compatibility and the user experience, David Zipkin, senior product manager for Windows Client, told eWEEK Aug.
28. " That is not our intent with Vista SP1, which we are designing to limit user interface changes as much as possible. Those UI changes that we
do make will be quite small and will not require retraining or anything like that, " he said.

31.07.2009Microsoft Endorses Product That Turns Off Vista UAC Nags
The latest version of a well-reviewed third-party security policy enhancement system for Windows Vista claims to solve what its manufacturer
characterizes as "not a secure solution" to a critical problem Windows historically had with administrator privileges on programs. But in the
announcement of the upgrade earlier this week, a key Microsoft product manager is quoted as having acknowledged Vista's own take on the solution was
not quite enough, effectively reversing his company's stand on User Account Control.
The product is BeyondTrust Privilege
Manager 3.5, and its key new feature is the ability to run Vista's UAC transparently without prompting the user for privilege elevation. In Monday's
press release, Microsoft director of client security product management Austin Wilson is quoted as not only endorsing the product, but appearing to
agree with BeyondTrust's key contention: that the UAC prompts were not only a nag but an insecure solution in itself.

10.02.2007Microsoft releases activation exploit detection update
Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista designed to detect activation exploits that bypass product activation and that interfere with usual
Windows operation. This update is tagged as KB940510.
According to Microsoft "when the update is installed, no functionality of your
operating system will be affected. If no exploits are detected, the update silently exits. If exploits are detected, you will be provided a link to a
Web site that describes how you can remove the exploits. When the exploits are removed, you may be asked to use a valid product key to activate your
copy of Windows. If you do not want to remove the exploits, Windows may disable the exploits and then ask you to use a valid product key to activate
Windows."

27.02.2008Product Activation Changes and Impacts on Windows Server 2008
Today the Windows group announced some changes in their increased efforts against piracy and new steps being taken to protect Windows Vista (see
here for details). These changes are coming in
Windows Vista SP1 (due out in Q1 2008). Along with disabling some of the known exploits that counterfeiters are using, changes are being made to
product activation. Specifically, the Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM) is being replaced with new notifications to let customers know that their
systems are not genuine when they do not activate or when their systems fail validation.
So what does this mean for Windows
