Motorola introduces a phone made from recycled water bottles

Motorola has officially jumped onto the eco-friendly bandwagon, though this bandwagon is a good one. While the Renew, as a phone, isn't that impressive, sporting GSM connectivity and a small 1.6" screen with a 128 x 128 resolution, it's the housing that should catch your attention. The plastics that comprise the shell of the phone are made entirely from plastics produced from recycled water bottles. This use of recycled materials means that the manufacturing process uses 20% less energy and that the outer shell of the phone is 100% recyclable.

Nvidia: Graphics is dead? Yeah right.

For the last several weeks, Nvidia has been at war with Intel over a statement of one of Intels engineers made at IDF suggesting that GPUs could soon be obsolete. There is a fundamental difference in the opinion how visual computing will evolve between graphics companies and Intel: Nvidias latest graphics card announcement is a clear statement that the company plans to aggressively raise the performance bar and remain in the lead in this segment come Intel or high water.

As the battleground shapes up right now, the visual computing battle will be fought on three fronts -  gaming, productivity, and physics. Nvidia has moved the bar in all three fronts. The areas that are most likely to reveal interesting trends are productivity and physics.  So lets have a look at those two.

128 GB memory cards possible with first 30 nm flash chips

While its possible successor technologies have been discussed for years, flash continues to scale extremely well: Samsung says it has developed the first 30 nm chip, providing a 64 Gb capacity “ four times of what is being offered by the highest capacity mass-production chips today.

The companies latest flash chips are claimed to be the first multi-level cell (MLC) 64 Gbit NAND flash chips. Using a 30 nm production technology, one of these chips represents a capacity of 8 GB, while a memory card (such as SD or CF-II) using 16 of these MLC chips can store a whopping 128 GB of data. 1.8ť solid state disks using 64 of the 30 nm chips could store 512 GB.

128 GB memory cards are not just impressive because they would provide enough room for 32,000 music files or 80 DVD movies, it is also beyond what is currently considered to be the mainstream of hard drive storage capacity in notebooks - 80 GB. Even more interesting: According to Samsung, this technology isnt science-fiction. The company plans to put these 64 Gb chips into mass production by 2009.

Dell, Alienware offer expensive 64 GB SSD

Samsung has begun shipping 64 GB SATA in a 2.5" form factor. The NAND flash-based hard drives are expected to become available as storage options for Dell and Alienware consumer notebooks.

According to Samsung, Alienware will be offering 64 GB and a 128 GB configuration (dual 64 GB RAID 0) as well as a single 64 GB SSD combined with a 200 GB 7200 rpm hard drive for its Area-51 m9750 notebook. Dell will be selling the SSD as an option for the XPS M1330 notebook.

At the time of this writing, only Alienware was offering the new SSD “ as a single-drive 64 GB option for the m9750. Customers will have to reach deep into their pockets to be able to enjoy the 64 GB SSD, as it comes at an additional cost of $1100, which is more than twice what the vendor charges for the 32 GB model ($500). The 128 GB option will cost another $300.

When configured with the 64 GB SSD, the notebooks checks in at $3200; while it is already equipped with a 512 GB Geforce graphics chip, the upgrade from a Core 2 Duo T5500 processor and from 1 GB memory, a DVD burner and a sound card will elevate the price to almost $4500 or $4800, if you are interested in the 128 SSD model.

AMD refreshes math library to include 128-bit Barcelona support

Today, AMD released the first of what will be two major upgrades to their AMD Core Math Library (ACML) in the coming year. This first includes support for Barcelona's native 128-bit SIMD engine. It works with Windows, Linux and Solaris, and doubles the floating point operations per clock to 8 on Barcelona, up from 4. The major upgrade next year will include direct support for heterogeneous processing using their recently announced FireStream 64-bit stream processor.

The refresh brings ACML up to version 4.0. The library is available for free download and includes enhancements to their base math algorithms. These include Level 1, 2 and 3 Basic Linear Alegbra Subroutines (BLAS), Linear Algebra (LAPACK) routines, Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs) in single, double, single-complex and double-complex data types, scalar, vector, array and transcendental math functions. A pseudo-random number generator is also included with both single and double precision generation.

IBM holds 128-thread 'Q7' variant of Power7

IBM has shelved a top-secret chip project meant to give the company a massively multi-threaded part that could have served as a major disrupter in the Unix world, The Register has learned.

According to information obtained by El Reg, IBM's processor boffins have been exploring something known as Q7. This processor was a possible follow on to today's Power6 and included support for up to 128 software threads. IBM considered Q7 a type of radical take on Power7, since the product centered more on many low-power cores rather than fewer more powerful cores.

In the end, IBM decided that Q7 would not deliver the mainstream performance needed by most of its Unix server customers. So, the vendor has set to work on a Power7 design that should arrive around 2010 with, oh, four to eight cores. The design work remains in process, making those figures very fluid. (We've heard chatter about each core supporting up to four threads.)

Windows Vista System Requirements Released

Microsoft has updated its Get Ready Web site to include the minimum system requirements to run Windows Vista. A Windows Vista Capable PC must include at least a CPU running at 800MHz, 512 MB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics card capable of at least 800x600, a CD-ROM drive and a 20 GB HDD with at least 15 GB free for the install. Of course, systems with bare minimum specifications will be unable to run Vista in the Aero interface.

In order a PC to be certified as "Windows Vista Premium Ready," it must have at least a 1 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory, Pixel Shader 2.0, DVD-ROM drive, a sound card, internet access and 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space. For Windows XP, users who did not meet the minimal requirements for XP Home (300 MHz, 128 MB) were still able to install and run the operating system, albeit rather slowly. It remains to be seen if Windows Vista will allow installs on machines lesser than minimal specification.

NVIDIA GeForce 8500, 8600 Clocks, Pipes

NVIDIA's GeForce 8600 GTS, 8600 GT and 8500 GT graphics processors are here, so let's go over the exact specifications. The GeForce 8600 GTS features 32-stream processors clocked at 1.45 GHz along with 256MB of GDDR3 memory clocked at 1.0 GHz. A 128-bit memory interface connects the memory to the GPU for 32GB/sec of memory bandwidth. The GeForce 8600 GT has the same 32-stream processors as the GTS; however, the unified shaders have a 1.18 GHz clock. Memory bandwidth is downgraded to 22.4 GB/sec thanks to slower core and memory clocks, at 540 MHz and 700 MHz, respectively. The GeForce 8500 GT has 16-stream processors clocked at 900 MHz and a 450 MHz core with DDR2 memory clocked at 400 MHz. The GeForce 8500 GT features the same 128-bit memory interface as the GeForce 8600-series. Memory bandwidth is downgraded to 12.8 GB/sec.

Vista not playing well with IPv6

Early adopters of Microsofts new Vista operating system are reporting problems with its implementation of IPv6, a long-anticipated upgrade to the Internets primary protocol.

IPv6 supports a 128-bit addressing scheme, which lets it support an order-of-magnitude more devices that are directly connected to the Internet than its predecessor, IPv4. IPv6 also has autoconfiguration, end-to-end security and other enhancements.

Vista supports IPv6 by default. Vista runs a single-stack, dual-IP-layer architecture, which means it is IPv4- and IPv6-capable out of the box. It supports tunneling of IPv6 traffic over an IPv4 backbone and includes IPSec that works for both IPv4 and IPv6. ..

Final Windows Vista System Specs Revealed

Microsoft just relealed the final Windows Vista Hardware Requirements. There you go, you'll need the following machine to run Vista:

Minimal Specs (Called Vista-Ready PCs):
-800Mhz Processor
-512 MB of RAM
-DirectX 9-Capable Graphics Processor

Recommended Specs (Called Premium-Ready PCs):
-1 Ghz Processor
-128 MB Graphics Memory, numerous other graphics-related requirements
-1 GB System Memory

Microsoft also plans to make an advertisement campaign around those required machines, in order to make people be sure their machine will meet those requirements, and this campaign should be revealed on May 18th, in this case tomorrow.

This announcement was made to prepare the also planned WinHEC release of Windows Vista Beta 2 (Supposedly Build 5384, last known compiled build as of today), which will likely be made public in the days following its release at WinHEC.

These requirements are about what was expected, maybe a little bit below. As previously announced, most PCs sold within last year might be Vista-Ready, though very few fully meet the Premium-Ready requirements.
