04.08.2008New data: 1 in 3 business PCs drop Vista for Windows XP
When Microsoft stopped selling new licenses to Windows XP on June 30, it gave users and PC makers a "downgrade" loophole so that those who wanted XP
could still get it, even though they still had to buy a Vista license.
According to data from the exo.performance.network,
35 percent of Vista-equipped PCs
have been downgraded to Windows XP. "That's way out of proportion for even the dramatically unpopular Windows Vista," says
Randall C. Kennedy, an InfoWorld contributing editor, whose company Devil Mountain Software developed the Windows Sentinel
tool and analyzes the exo.performance.network data. (More than 3,000 PCs are monitored worldwide using the tool, in both the
free InfoWorld Windows Sentinel version and in the more extensive version provided to Devil Mountain clients.)

08.01.2008Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP
Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the
notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of
product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is
"the product edition that is most often stolen."
Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next
time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This
will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows
XP Pro.

10.08.2008Windows Mobile 6.5 Confirmed
Following the announced
delay of Windows
Mobile 7, an intermediary upgrade step has been confirmed. While visiting Australia for
Liberation Day, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer spoke of the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for next year in his roadmap.
In talking about Windows Mobile 6.5, Steve Ballmer
did not go in to specifics but did hint at an improvement in the interface and flow of the software. It is believed, however, that this will be the
first release to contain the
reported Zune software integration instead of the much delayed Windows Mobile 7 release.
Though there was no specific
date given for Windows Mobile 7, it was believed to be scheduled for the third quarter of 2010, two years away.
Sources close to Microsoft
have indicated to Neowin that Windows Mobile 6.5 is currently being readied for device partners who should receive copies within the next month.
It's possible that 6.5 could be ready in 2009 Q1.

07.11.200875K want to save aging Windows OS
As posted
yesterday, InfoWorld has taken it upon
themselves to force Microsoft to change its policy of dumping XP out of retail from June 30th 2008, by
calling on everyone to sign a petition
demanding an extension. Never mind the fact that Microsoft has thus far extended almost every version of Windows past its original "expiry" date,
with possibly, the exception of Windows ME!
It has found somewhere in the region of 75,000 people who have yet to buy it, or want the
opportunity to buy it whenever they please. I suppose this was to be expected bearing in mind that this is the first ever client version of Windows
that is based on the very stable NT core, it can't be compared to Windows 98 which was truly annoying for its lack of stability. Anyone who has XP
installed probably doesn't need to upgrade, since the OS operates so well.
How dare Microsoft offer a new OS after 7 years!

19.02.2008Worst Windows flaws of the past decade
June 25, 1998, and June 30, 2008, marked two important milestones in Microsoft's evolution of the Windows OS -- the passing of the torch from Windows
95 to Windows 98, and the less seemly
transition
from XP to Vista.
In the 3,659 days between, users of Windows have been forced to bear witness to another evolution of
sorts: bugs that left Windows open to exploits that appeared almost as fast as you could say, "On the Origin of Species."

06.10.2008Microsoft confirms PDC and hints at Windows 7 sessions

With Windows 7 still not available for everyone, news has surfaced that Microsoft is already researching and working on some of the architecture for

years away from the next release, and still on the brink of the release of the latest version of Windows.

08.10.2009Windows 7 upgrade chart available
Microsoft has made available the official Windows 7 Upgrade chart, via allthingsd which indicates which previous versions of Windows are available for
an in-place upgrade to Windows 7, and to which version they can upgrade. You can view the chart below: As you can see from just a glance at the
chart, it's relatively confusing. Windows 7 offers no direct upgrade path from XP, which was announced very early on in the Windows 7 development
life cycle. Very specific upgrade paths from other versions of Windows Vista exist also. You can perform a "Custom Install" which is pretty much a
clean install, but you have the option to install Windows 7 to another disk without overwriting data.

Microsoft Asia Pacific has responded to researchers' claims that enterprise chief information officers "have not warmed to the Vista operating
system over the past year." The northern hemisphere researchers said that the CIOs they recently surveyed voted 11 to one against plans to implement

especially in the current economic climate." Richard Francis, General Manager, Windows Client Group, Microsoft Asia Pacific, said that, overall,
sales of Windows Vista licenses have passed 180 million since launch, and at least 100 million Windows Vista users have actively hit Windows Update.
