09.02.2007Survey: Windows loses ground with developers
Microsoft's Windows platform

to
Evans

A survey this spring of
more than 400 developers and

"We attribute
largely to the

and Red Hat are the two

than 1GHz, and memory is limited to 1G byte of RAM.

No Ultimate Extras for Windows 7
Windows Vista Ultimate had an interesting feature touted by Microsoft before it's release, named Extras. This was intended to be an added extra
for the paying the hefty price of Ultimate, to give some bonuses to those who paid for it. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't plan it very well, and
included very few with in the release of Vista Ultimate. This led Microsoft to publicy apologizing over the matter, and to this day not a great number
have been released. This led people to wonder about Windows 7 Ultimate. Would it feature Extras, or would Microsoft not worry about them this time
around?

Vista is Watching You
Are you using Windows Vista?
Then you might as well know
that the licensed operating
system installed on your
machine is harvesting a
healthy volume of information
for Microsoft.
In
this context, a program such
as the Windows Genuine
Advantage is the last of your
concerns. In fact, in excess
of 20 Windows Vista features
and services are hard at work
collecting and transmitting
your personal data to the
Redmond company.
Microsoft makes no secret
about the fact that Windows
Vista is gathering
information. End users have
little to say, and no real
choice in the matter. The
company does provide both a
Windows Vista Privacy
Statement and references
within the End User License
Agreement for the operating
system. Combined, the
resources paint the big
picture over the extent of
Microsoft's end user data
harvest via Vista.

Windows Live to act as OpenID provider
In July of last year, Microsoft threw its
weight behind supporting the OpenID protocol. In February of this year, Microsoft joined the OpenID
foundation's board. Now, Microsoft has committed to OpenID further by announcing that Windows Live will become a OpenID provider and that you
will soon be able to use your Windows Live ID account to sign in to any OpenID enabled website.
OpenID is a distributed authentication
method for allowing users to securely use a single digital ID to sign into multiple websites on the Internet. AOL and Yahoo already allow users to
authenticate against their AOL or Yahoo credentials on sites using OpenID. Google so far has not adopted OpenID through any supported means.
Currently Microsoft's OpenID implementation is on their Windows Live ID Integration environment, intended for sites and software providers who
provide OpenID authentication to test against the service. Your normal Windows Live ID cannot currently be used for OpenID. Microsoft does not seem to
have any plans to allow the use of your OpenID to login to sites that require a Windows Live ID. Meaning you'll still need to maintain accounts at
Yahoo, AOL and Windows Live to login to services on their individual sites. However, in becoming a provider, Microsoft has taken a step in the right
direction towards opening up their services.
Microsoft has given no specifics on when they plan to make OpenID authentication available on
their public servers.

Mozilla in talks with carriers about mobile Firefox
Mozilla is in informal talks with mobile operators about its mobile Firefox project, which
the organization hopes will shake up the market as much as the introduction of the desktop browser did in 2004.
"Mozilla's
mission is to break open a closed market," said Mike Schroepfer, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, during a visit to London earlier this
week. But "it won't happen overnight."
The impact, however, will be felt before year's end. By then, Mozilla is aiming to release a
mobile browser for two operating systems: embedded Linux and Microsoft's Windows Mobile.

Opinion: IE7 is out of the door, Move along Firefox?
Yesterday on Wednesday 18th at
around 5pm PST Dean
Hachamovitch, the General
Manager for the IE development
team, announced the immediate
availability of Windows
Internet Explorer 7 for
Windows XP and Server 2003.
Vista versions need not apply,
as IE7 comes bundled with the
operating system.
For prosperity he noted his
initial
announcement back in 2005,
after Bill Gates delivered a
keynote speech in which he
announced IE7, at that time
there was speculation and
drama developing as to the
future of IE at all on XP
which seemed uncertain at the
time.
Clearly
Microsoft needed to respond to
its customers and come up with
a better way to browse the
internet and in my opinion it
did. Will it be enough to sway
users that strayed over to
Firefox? Only time will tell
and I'm keeping my options
open, I regularly use both
browsers and ultimately one
will prevail. Its too early to
say.
So whats
new in Windows Internet
Explorer 7 aside from the
name?
I'll let Dean
answer that: "The Phishing
Filter and the
architectural work in IE7
around networking
a> and ActiveX
opt-in will help keep
users more secure. IE7 also
delivers a much easier
browsing experience with
features like tabbed browsing
(especially
with QuickTabs), shrink-to-fi
t printing, an easily
customizable search box,
and a new design that leaves
more screen real estate for
the web site you're viewing.
IE7's CSS
improvements are
incredibly important for
developers as many of you have
made quite clear. I also think
IE7's RSS experience
a> and platform
are important, powerful, and
innovative."

Windows 7 Media Center Review
Engadget: We've been waiting a long time for this and it's finally here, the latest version of Windows Media Center. Well, we really stopped waiting
a few months ago when the release
candidate hit, but waited on composing our thoughts until after we had a chance to play with the RTM copy. For the most part, as you'd expect
the RTM build is identical to the RC, sans the bugs, but there are plenty of upgrades over Vista Media Center. Many of these new features were also in the TV Pack, but in our book that
doesn't count. For starters it was OEM only, and thus you could only get it (legitimately) by buying a new PC, but the real reason is because it was
so buggy, it was beyond usable. In fact we still stand by the theory that the TV Pack was
nothing more than an early preview for OEMs of the new guts of Windows 7 Media Center. Gladly that is all behind us now, so keep reading to find
out what gets us excited about Windows 7 Media Center...

75K want to save aging Windows OS
As posted yesterday, InfoWorld has taken it upon
themselves to force Microsoft to change its policy of dumping XP out of retail from June 30th 2008, by calling on everyone to sign a petition
demanding an extension. Never mind the fact that Microsoft has thus far extended almost every version of Windows past its original "expiry" date,
with possibly, the exception of Windows ME!
It has found somewhere in the region of 75,000 people who have yet to buy it, or want the
opportunity to buy it whenever they please. I suppose this was to be expected bearing in mind that this is the first ever client version of Windows
that is based on the very stable NT core, it can't be compared to Windows 98 which was truly annoying for its lack of stability. Anyone who has XP
installed probably doesn't need to upgrade, since the OS operates so well.
How dare Microsoft offer a new OS after 7 years!
