5.8.2008Might Microsofts Midori be ˜Cairo revisited?
Mary Jo Foley: My post about
Microsoft’s post-Windows operating system, code-named
“Midori,” elicited some interesting responses and a few potential new clues over the past week.
To those of you
who sent me notes speculating/wondering whether Microsoft’s Midori might be a derivative of the
Midori Linux effort and/or the
Midori lightweight Web browser project, I’ll reiterate that I
don’t believe these other Midori projects have anything to do with Microsoft’s Midori.

07.07.2008Microsoft taking a sip of Midori
Ina Fried: Yes, Microsoft is pursuing a different type of operating system, which goes by the name of Midori. And, no, it's not the next version of
Windows.
The Midori subject has gotten a great deal of attention in recent days, with the fires only fanned by the fact that
Microsoft has refused to say anything about Midori beyond confirming that it is an "incubation project" within the company. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley
noted its existence in her Microsoft 2.0 book, while more recently SDTimes
posted a bunch of details on Midori based on internal documents.
From
there, there has been plenty of speculation about what Midori is and isn't.
Here's what I've been able to confirm...

05.08.2008Microsoft sees end of Windows era
Microsoft has kicked off a research project to create software that will take over when it retires Windows. Called Midori, the cut-down operating
system is radically different to Microsoft's older programs. It is centred on the internet and does away with the dependencies that tie Windows to
a single PC. It is seen as Microsoft's answer to rivals' use of "virtualisation" as a way to solve many of the problems of modern-day
computing.
Although Midori has been heard about before now, more details have now been published by Software Development Times after
viewing internal Microsoft documents describing the technology. Midori is believed to be under development because Windows is unlikely to be able to
cope with the pace of change in future technology and the way people use it.

Security is a watchword for Midori, the operating system that Microsoft is incubating in hopes of freeing itself from its legacy Windows software
architecture.
SD Times has viewed internal Microsoft documents that detail Midoris security proposition. The highlights include
memory safety and type safety, and a least-privileged mode. As well, hardware support may enable a secure boot mechanism and a remote chain of trust
on top of secure booting.

05.08.2008Goodbye, XP. Hello, Midori
June 30 is
the day that Microsoft begins phasing out Windows XP by no longer providing copies
of the operating system to PC makers and retailers for preloading on new machines. It’s also a good day (thanks to a recent New York Times
opinion piece) to start looking ahead to what comes next after Windows.

mysterious “Midori” project.

15.02.2008Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?
Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the
change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the
color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:
A
method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method
includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying
the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to
apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value
and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be
application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

06.08.2008PINNED: WLM Build 566 Comming
Soon
Remember that little talk
about how the 562 build of
Windows Live Messenger was
just a preview; well here
comes the bride... I mean the
build. Build 566 of WLM is to
be released on February 28th
according to the WLM team
blog.
The
build will feature some
noticeable updates, mainly the
layout of the Contact List,
the tabs have now been
repositioned inside the main
window, the spacing between
each contact has been reduced
to allow more contacts to be
viewable in the window (= less
scrolling) and the avatar
preview and display
name/personal messages boxes
are finally back to the left
side again.
A
few of the minor updates
include the fact that the
menus are now only available
through the drop down menu,
meaning you can no longer
expand or minimize the window
frame like before. Also, the
ink/type tabs in the
conversation window have been
moved to the right side closer
to your display picture.
It has also been
announced that the WLM team is
working on new status icons
that both look good and show
the status at the same
time.

28.02.2006War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript
A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by
disabling each other's functionality. The issue at stake is NoScript's behavior of showing a changelog window whenever it gets a new update,
which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that changelog window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript.
AdBlock Plus on the other hand is commited to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has treaded on the tail of the author of
NoScript.

Long Zheng: First, a few words about the following screenshot. To be perfectly clear, this is not an original image. The window and its contents

At the risk of undercutting one of its core product lines, Microsoft is carefully conceptualizing a way to move millions of users away from the

SD Times has viewed internal Microsoft documents that reveal the companys preference of an orderly replacement strategy rather than breaking
sharply with its past.

31.07.2008Bluetooth gives Spies a Window into your Life
Worried about your civil liberties and privacy? Then it may come as a shock to discover that you have unwittingly been allowing your phone to signal
your every move.
Bluetooth, a wireless link built into many cellphones, makes our movements trackable by anyone equipped with a PC and an
appropriate receiver. Vassilis Kostakos at the University of Bath in the UK placed four Bluetooth receivers in the city's centre. Over four
months, his team tracked 10,000 Bluetooth phones and was able to "capture and analyse people's encounters" in pubs, streets and shops.
Bluetooth is now more of a privacy threat than the more frequently publicised RFID chips, Kostakos says. "If people are worried, they should turn
off the Bluetooth function on their mobile phones."

Free, open-source utility
Winsize2 sets up a single keyboard combination to
remember, and change, the preferred size and positioning of your Windows applications. In other words, if you hate how your browser opens up to
seemingly random sizes, or full-screen instead of windowed, have Winsize2 running and hit Ctrl+Alt+Z (or, on some systems, with Y as the final key).
That locks down the apps' size and place, and hitting the combination again will over-write that preference if you like another position better...

21.06.2008Patent reveals Aero Glass reflections was also to change according to time of day
Is there a possibility that
we may see this idea as a
future Ultimate Extra or as a
feature in Vista SP1? Only
time will tell...
Dont read this if you are
easily disappointed or are
already disappointed with
Windows Vista compared to
Longhorn, since it just adds
more fuel to the flame. A
patent application filed
yesterday (May 31) reveals a
little more about the other
ideas Microsoft had for Aero
Glass.
The key
characteristics of Aero Glass,
colorization and reflection,
are explained in two separate
patents,
"http://appft1.uspto.gov/neta
cgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect
2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetah

tml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f

GNR.&OS=DN/20070124691&RS=DN/2
0070124691>Dynamic reflective
highlighting of a glass
appearance window frame." The
latter brings up an
interesting idea, it writes:
As described
above, a reflective highlight
of a glass appearance of an
application window frame may
be configured to change during
a move and/or resize operation
based on a set of rules that
describe a reflective
highlight images placement
relative to the current
position of the application
window within a desktop space.
Concurrently or alternatively,
a reflective highlight may be
configured to change in
response to a time of day
event.
If youre
not familiar with the
techno-babble-patent-language,
what it means is that the
reflection in Aero Glass (the
white stripes) was designed to
change based on the position
of the application window on
the desktop, on the time of
day, or both.
