Doodle 4 Google - K-12 Logo Competition Voting Starts

Doodle 4 Google is a competition where kids from across the U.S. were asked to doodle new Google logos. Google had received thousands of entries, and narrowed it down to 40 finalists for public voting. Voting is now open to the public, and the winner will replace the normal logo May 22, 2008!

In 2000, Dennis Hwang became Google's first doodler. When asked how he comes up with designs for logos Hwang responded: "First, I do a lot of brainstorming, search for images on Google, and absorb all the imagery. Then I apply a design that interacts with letters. I find that a bit more interesting."

Look out 2D search, you're one dimension behind

http://www.spacetime.com/>Spac eTime is a new tool for searching the Web in three dimensions. You can search using Google and Yahoo, or dig deeper into niche services like eBay and Flickr. Results show up in a swirling sky-like environment where you can sort through rendered pages in stacks, similar to Windows Vista's Flip 3D window-shuffling effect and the upcoming Time Machine in OSX Leopard. You can maneuver around any page, and zoom back and forth. To see any result up close, just double-click on it and it will revert to a customized browser window that's running a shelled version of Internet Explorer.

Firefox 4.0 redesign mockups released

Earlier last week, Mozilla updated the Firefox 3.7 wiki to show potential design changes for Firefox 3.7, and today, updated their wiki to show new mock ups for Firefox 4.0 Windows designs. The designs are changed to fit better into Windows 7 - as they want to "embrace glass" which is a major goal of Mozilla for the next Firefox release, as well as making them feel more a part of the OS. The designs also work on Windows Vista. A separate design would be in place for lower versions of Windows. The images below show the ideas that the Mozilla team has, for some potential tab layouts/UI redesigns.

Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Kodak Designs New CMOS Sensor

Eastman Kodak Company revealed today in a press release that it has created the world’s first 1.4 micron, 5 megapixel device, the KAC-05020 Image Sensor. Using significantly smaller pixels, this sensor enables a higher level of resolution in small optical formats which will be especially useful in devices like cellphones: the sensor allows for full 720p video at 30fps in a quarter-inch camera. Unlike other small-pixel sensors which can produce poor images, especially under low light conditions, the 1.4 micron pixel used in the KAC-05020 is reportedly able to provide image quality that can equal or surpass what is available from current devices using larger, 1.75 micron pixel CMOS designs.

TED2008: What is our place in the universe?

The second session of TED2008 asks "What is our place in the universe?" and it cogently opens with a sneak preview of an amazing piece of technology under development at Microsoft: the World Wide Telescope, a powerful new web-based tool for exploring the universe (for the geeks among you, this is the unnamed piece of new tech that made blogger Robert Scoble weep recently). It functions like a virtual telescope, bringing together imagery from actual ground and space (Hubble) telescopes.

Office 2007 SP1 Technical Preview Info

I installed the recently released Office 2007 SP1 Technical Preview update on top of Office 2007 Enterprise Edition running on Windows Vista Business Edition. Here's some quick info about it:

Version: 12.0.6207.1000 (MSO 12.0.6206.1000)

File size: 214MB (exe)

The Microsoft Office Cache folder (MSOCache) does not get updated with any SP1 bits; only the Program FilesMicrosoft Office folder is partially updated. New files have varying digital signature dates (as well as older version numbers for some of the older files) ranging from May 30th, 2007 all the way up to July 23rd, 2007. Naturally the dates will all change as this is not the final build of Office 2007 SP1.

Not much more to say about it at the moment as I didn't notice any usability or user interface differences on a quick glance. All in all, a very smooth update to an already smooth running Office suite.
