"In the long term, we think of Chromium as a tabbed window manager or shell for the web rather than a browser application. We avoid putting things
into our UI in the same way you would hope that Apple and Microsoft would avoid putting things into the standard window frames of applications on
their operating systems. The tab is our equivalent of a desktop application's title bar; the frame containing the tabs is a convenient mechanism for
managing groups of those applications. In future, there may be other tab types that do not host the normal browser toolbar," explains
a document about Chrome's user experience.

15.09.2008Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?
Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the
change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the
color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:
A
method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method
includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying
the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to
apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value
and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be
application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

03.10.2006Giving up on Vista? Here's how to downgrade to XP
Microsoft's decision last week to delay the end of Windows XP sales five months means users have just that much longer to jilt Vista and return to
the older -- and some say more mature -- operating system. But even with XP's reprieve, few PCs come with anything but Vista. Even if you wanted to
take advantage of the wider window of XP opportunity, you might not know where to start.
For the rest of us, just what does it take to turn back the clock? Read on for more
about the trip to Windows yesteryear.
What is a downgrade? To Microsoft, "downgrade" describes the licensing rights it grants
to older operating systems. Downgrade doesn't mean the process for rolling back Windows from Vista to XP, since there isn't such a procedure, not in
the generally accepted use of "upgrade." In an older-to-newer move, developers usually make it possible to retain all the digital detritus on the
drive, from already-installed applications and Word documents to iTunes tracks and family photos, while updating the system files. Not so in a
downgrade.

Lawsuit filed against Apple over vague user interface patent
The patent holding company IP
Innovation LLC has filed a
lawsuit against Apple
Incorporated, blaming the
Cupertino-based company for
" directly infringing at
least claim 21 of the '412
Patent through, among other
activities, the manufacture,
use, sale, offer for sale
and/or importation into the
United States of its Mac OS X
v10.4 'Tiger' operating
system ." US Patent
#5,072,412 describes a
computer operating system
interface with " workspaces
provided by an object-based
user interface appear to share
windows and other display
objects ." IP Innovation
is asking for $20 million
in damages from Apple, to add
to the list of at least 32
other patent infringement
cases over the past several
years against companies as
varied as Daewoo, Samsung,
Dell, Thomson, Brother, Sony,
and RealNetworks.
The patent in question was
originally filed by Xerox back
in 1991, referencing patents
that dealt with graphical user
interfaces dating back to
1984. This specific patent
describes a
" workplace " that
consists of multiple windows
and " other display
objects " on the screen,
and if a user clicks on one of
the links in each window, it
can cause the contents of said
window to change, reflecting a
different
" workplace ." The
language of the patent is very
vague and could apply to any
user interface found in all
modern operating systems, but
seems to be most closely
related to the idea of
" tabbed " dialog
boxes, like the ones seen in
both Windows and Mac OS X. It
remains to be seen whether or
not IP Innovations plan to
continue their lawsuit rampage
by going after Microsoft and
other system vendors.

Windows hardware challenge draws on resources
Here's a question for you: what hardware does it take to run an entirely new, pre-release Windows operating system and 1TB-worth of SQL Server 2008

This question seems simple to answer, but the challenge comes in locating the requisite hardware.
One problem that always arises when using any beta operating system is: no hardware manufacturer will certify kit to run the new operating system
before that operating system has reached its release code form, because last minute changes may interfere with the certification process.

Asia is Microsoft's window to mobile market
Asia continues to be the biggest driver of Microsoft's mobile business.
Chris Sorensen, Microsoft's Asia-Pacific, Greater China
and Japan lead product manager for its mobile communications business division, said in an interview with ZDNet Asia: "Mobile phones are critical
markers of social status and identity in Asia, more so than in Europe and America. Everything about the phone is a very visible marker of the type of
person you are."
According to Sorensen, Asia makes up the most significant portion of Microsoft's mobile business -- 46 percent
of the software maker's global mobile market. In comparison, the region covering Europe, the Middle East and Africa counts for 37 percent, with the
Americas trailing at 17 percent.
In 2008, Microsoft plans to open 35 new concept stores in China to promote its mobile operating

Overview of Windows Server 2008 in the Enterprise
Amit Pawar: By now you have either heard or read something somewhere that Microsoft is about to release a new Serve operating System. The new server
operating system is Windows Server 2008, slated for world wide release on February 27 2007. I have now been working with and presenting on Windows
Server 2008 for the past one year and the first thing I talk to customers about is why this is a significant release of Window Server Platform, and
the top reasons for why they should consider Windows Server 2008 as a important part of their IT Infrastructure platform.
The
capabilities the new version of Windows Server brings to an IT infrastructure is a strategic asset and the critical foundation upon which software can
deliver services and user applications that a business needs in order to operate effectively and succeed. Windows Server 2008 enables greater business
success by providing a platform that supports mission critical solutions and applications, making them available to your organization when it needs
them. Windows Server 2008 is the platform on which our customers can build their business on.

Automated System Recovery (ASR) in Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1
Automated System Recovery or ASR as it is more commonly known is the Windows API set to capture the configuration of disks and volumes on a system and
restore them in bare metal recovery scenarios. During such recoveries, backup applications (requesters) invoke ASR to restore the disks and volumes
prior to putting back the operating system, applications and data.
For the purpose of bare metal recovery scenarios, the disks
and volumes in a system can be divided into two broad categories “ critical and non-critical. Critical volumes are those containing system state or
operating system components and include the boot and system volumes. A volume containing the Active Directory database on a domain controller is also
an example of a critical volume. Critical disks as youve likely guessed are those that contain critical volumes.
Once the
operating system and data have been put back, requesters may perform more recovery operations after the system is booted into the restored operating
system.
