Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Sparkle produces the first 80 nanometre Nvidia card

MANY businesses in Europe will be closed from Monday till probably January the 3rd 2007. That hasn't stopped Sparkle from announcing its Calibre P768 card based on Geforce 7600 GT 80nm chip. I guess Nvidia had to do it in 2006 as it promised to its investors it was supposed to shift from 90 nanometre to 80 a while ago.

The new 80 nanometre parts will end up clocked at 650MHz - 90MHz faster than the previous 7600 GT clock. The chip behind it is G73 but we don't know what Nvidia calls the new 80 nanometre ones. The memory on Sparkle card works at 1600MHz and Nvidia hasn't changed the chip memory support as it still works with 128 bit memory only. The card comes with 256MB memory and has twelve rendering pipelines. It supports PCIe 16X interface.

Understanding Windows 7 AppLocker

Daniel Nerenberg: Window 7 RTM has been available for just a few weeks now, but already IT Pros everywhere are diving into great new features. One of the more exciting features introduced in Windows 7 is AppLocker. Many of you know about Software Restriction Policies, they allow you to block the execution of a program by file name or hash calculation. You probably also know how it was a race to block applications in our network with these methods. Users could change the name of the file, or applications updates so frequently that you would constantly need to generate new hash files...

FileBox eXtender - Now Freeware

After a great deal of development work we have sadly concluded that it is not practical to adapt FileBox eXtender to work under Window Vista - the architecture is simply too different.

With FileBox eXtender you can create a menu of files, folders or drives that you can access from a tray icon or from whatever window is open. It will add more buttons to the top of your windows that you can use to roll-up the window, make it stay on top of other windows or quickly choose save location. You can create sub menus in the list if you want to. This provides one click access to any application or folder you want to open. FileBox eXtender has more features which you can read about at the site.

PINNED: WLM Build 566 Comming Soon

Remember that little talk about how the 562 build of Windows Live Messenger was just a preview; well here comes the bride... I mean the build. Build 566 of WLM is to be released on February 28th according to the WLM team blog.

The build will feature some noticeable updates, mainly the layout of the Contact List, the tabs have now been repositioned inside the main window, the spacing between each contact has been reduced to allow more contacts to be viewable in the window (= less scrolling) and the avatar preview and display name/personal messages boxes are finally back to the left side again.

A few of the minor updates include the fact that the menus are now only available through the drop down menu, meaning you can no longer expand or minimize the window frame like before. Also, the ink/type tabs in the conversation window have been moved to the right side closer to your display picture.

It has also been announced that the WLM team is working on new status icons that both look good and show the status at the same time.

War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript

A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by disabling each other's functionality. The issue at stake is NoScript's behavior of showing a changelog window whenever it gets a new update, which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that changelog window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript. AdBlock Plus on the other hand is commited to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has treaded on the tail of the author of NoScript.

Lo and behold, the Internet Explorer 8 toolbar

Long Zheng: First, a few words about the following screenshot. To be perfectly clear, this is not an original image. The window and its contents (address bar, tab, window title, page content) have been heavily recomposited to better fit in a smaller image size as well as to obscure any traces where this might have come from. I did not take the screenshot nor do I have access to the beta (so no emails please but do send bribes regardless). Having said that, I can easily vouch for its authenticity...

Bluetooth gives Spies a Window into your Life

Worried about your civil liberties and privacy? Then it may come as a shock to discover that you have unwittingly been allowing your phone to signal your every move.

Bluetooth, a wireless link built into many cellphones, makes our movements trackable by anyone equipped with a PC and an appropriate receiver. Vassilis Kostakos at the University of Bath in the UK placed four Bluetooth receivers in the city's centre. Over four months, his team tracked 10,000 Bluetooth phones and was able to "capture and analyse people's encounters" in pubs, streets and shops.

Bluetooth is now more of a privacy threat than the more frequently publicised RFID chips, Kostakos says. "If people are worried, they should turn off the Bluetooth function on their mobile phones."

The other Google Search Site

Google has created a search site without any Google branding to test new features. The site, SearchMash, has a simple blue and white interface with a search bar and an option to click on "popular searches." Once keywords are entered, the results page features links to results running down the left side of the page and the top three image results on the right side.

SearchMash also lets you click on a result and drag and drop it to change the order. Also, when a link is clicked on, the user is offered the option of opening the listings in the current window or a new window, seeing more pages from the Web site or finding similar pages. Additional results are added to the bottom of the original results page by clicking on a "more web pages" link.

With SearchMash, Google "plans to test user interface ideas without Google's brand somehow skewing the tests," Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch.com wrote in a blog posting on Monday. "It's pretty slick."

Windows Live Toolbar Released

It seems that Microsoft is rolling out their Windows Live Services this week. First Windows Live Gallery and then Windows Live Mail Beta Milestone 7, well now it's Windows Live Toolbar. The only difference... this one is no longer beta.
Less then an hour ago, Microsoft rolled out its newest addition to their slew of Windows Live Services. The toolbar provides many new features to Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer web browser, features such as Page Search which allows the user to search for content on the active web page, Anti-Phishing and Anti-Virus protection.

And the most anticipated of all the features is the toolbar's ability to integrate tabbed browsing into the browser's user interface. (Not available in IE7) This allows you to view multiple pages without having to open a seperate window for each.

Vista Users: Beware of the Firewall

The Internet Engineering Task Force recently held its 68th meeting in the beautiful-but-cloudy city of Prague. At that meeting, Dave Thaler, who works at Microsoft and is a member of the IETF's architecture board, the IAB, talked about what Microsoft ran into when revising the Windows TCP/IP stack for Vista. The result: Network connectivity may fail when you try to use Windows Vista behind a firewall device (Microsoft Knowledge Base article 934430).

What's this all about? There are actually two issues at play.

After XP shipped, Microsoft wanted to take the opportunity to add some new TCP features to Longhorn/Vista's IP stack. The most troublesome new feature is ECN, or Explicit Congestion Notification. ECN is specified in RFC 3168, published shortly after Windows XP's release in 2001. The idea is that when there is congestion on the network because too much traffic wants to flow through a certain connection, it would be good if the router would tell the hosts sending all this traffic that there's congestion so they can slow down a bit.

Microsoft Pushes Secure, Quality Code

Microsoft is adding new code analysis features to its upcoming Visual Studio 2008 tools suite.

In Visual Studio 2005, the company integrated a couple of static analysis toolsFxCop and PREfast into the tools suite under the names Managed Code Analysis and C/C++ Code Analysis, said S. "Soma" Somasegar, corporate vice president of Microsoft's developer division, in a blog post Oct. 4.

Now for Visual Studio 2008, Microsoft's code analysis team is adding some new features, including Code Metrics, a new tool window "that allows you to not only get an overall view of the health of your application, but also gives you the ability to dig deep to find those unmaintainable and complex hotspots," Somasegar said.

Winsize2 Remembers Your Preferred Window Sizes

Free, open-source utility Winsize2 sets up a single keyboard combination to remember, and change, the preferred size and positioning of your Windows applications. In other words, if you hate how your browser opens up to seemingly random sizes, or full-screen instead of windowed, have Winsize2 running and hit Ctrl+Alt+Z (or, on some systems, with Y as the final key). That locks down the apps' size and place, and hitting the combination again will over-write that preference if you like another position better...
