Office 2010 Has Leaked!

The Technical Preview of Office 2010 has officially leaked! WZor.net uploaded a torrent a few hours ago for both the x86 and x64 versions of the new Office suite.

Without further ado, I present:

Microsoft Office 2010 (x86)

AND

Microsoft Office 2010 (x64)

The x64 torrent doesn't seem to be very active at the moment, but over time, as it gains more seeders, hopefully it will pick up. We were achieving speeds of up to 1000kbps during our download of the x86 version, so the torrent is going strong... That is, until the rest of the world picks up on it... Download quickly!

While you eagerly await the end of your download, check out a screenshot gallery from WZor as well (the version pictured in the screenshots is the x64 version).

Windows 7 build 7105 RC Milestone reached

Builds for Windows 7 keep powering forward; it seems there are new ones being reported weekly, but here's one that might be worth sitting up and paying attention for: it appears Windows 7 has reached build 7105, an RC build. But in addition to this, it's worth remembering that a Windows 7 RC could possibly be available April 10th. This timing makes it seem as though Neowin's exclusive source was dead on, and that in a few days time Microsoft will announce availability of an RC build for its latest operating system. The string for this build is 6.1.7105.0.090404-1235_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GB1CULFRER_EN_DVD, and it was compiled on April 4th.

Windows 7 Build 7105

A short while ago, Windows 7 Build 7105 surfaced on the 'net, raising some eyebrows with its appearance. After previous rumors that the release candidate could pop up sometime in early April (specifically April 10th), could this be a build not far off from the planned RC one?

Neowin reports that from an 'exculsive source,' they were able to pinpoint build 7100 as being the most viable build number to recieve the 'RC' status. Compiled on April 4th, Build 7105 bears the following build string: "6.1.7105.0.090404-1235_x86fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GB1CULFRER_EN_DVD"

According to WZor, there are a few visible changes in the build, despite its short time away from RC. The changes include:

1. Improved networking support, the work in the local network
2. Added support for some previously incompatible programs
3. Extras in the LP (?) and small cosmetic interface improvements
4. Added support for new drivers for various devices
5. Extended support sensory displays
6. A small optimization and changes in the kernel

Besides some behind-the-scenes changes, it would seem that Microsoft is just putting on the final touches. Nerds rejoyce!

Two Years After Patch, Another IE FTP Flaw

A flaw in the way Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser processes FTP commands could let attackers steal or erase data from a victim's FTP site.

The bug, which affects users of IE 6 and the unsupported IE 5 browser, gives an attacker a way of hijacking the victim's FTP sessions. But a successful attack would be very hard to pull off and would only work in very precise, targeted attacks, security experts said.

The attacker would need to know the victim's username on the FTP server and the victim would have to already be logged into the server, using IE. Under those conditions, the victim could be sent a malicious FTP link that would then execute commands on the victim's FTP server.

Critical F-Secure Update released

Finnish antivirus company F-Secure Corp. warned users today to install an update to fix a serious flaw in many of its products that it said attackers could use to seize control over computers running the software.

F-Sec ure said the problem has to do with the way its products examine compressed ZIP or RAR archive files. People often send files compressed with ZIP or RAR utilities as e-mail attachments because they can radically reduce the attachment file size.

Unfortunately , virus and worm writers also often send their creations inside ZIP or RAR files to make it past e-mail security scans, which usually filter out executable files but often allow compressed files, leaving the inspection of those files to antivirus products once the user opens the compressed archive.

According to F-Secure, attackers could use the flaw to create a file that cannot be scanned properly, potentially allowing the malicious file to slip past the company's antivirus scanners...

Two years after patch, a new IE5/6 FTP flaw

A flaw in the way Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser processes FTP commands could let attackers steal or erase data from a victim's FTP site.

The bug, which affects users of IE6 and the unsupported IE5 browser, gives an attacker a way of hijacking the victim's FTP sessions. But a successful attack would be very hard to pull off and would only work in very precise and targeted attacks, security experts said.

The attacker would need to know the victim's user name on the FTP server and the victim would have to already be logged into the server, using IE. Under those conditions, the victim could be sent a malicious FTP link that would then execute commands on the victim's FTP server.

This link could be sent to the browser via an invisible iFrame component, hidden on a malicious website, so the victim might not even know the attack was taking place. "It's something that people could use to steal data, but you'd have to know your target," said Derek Abdine, the principal software engineer with security vendor Rapid7, who unveiled the issue in a security advisory.

WinZip 11.0 Released

WinZip 11.0 includes features that build on the solid foundation established with WinZip 10.0. We applied user feedback to help improve the Job Wizard, and added a number of compression and usability enhancements, as well as the ability to open .BZ2 and .RAR files.

Like WinZip 10.0, you can select WinZip 11.0 with Standard or Pro features, and both offer compression enhancements that make WinZip 11.0 the most versatile WinZip ever. Our new "best compression" option allows you to let WinZip decide the best compression method for each file based on the file type. This will ensure that you maximize the compression of every file that you add to your Zip file. WinZip 11.0 also allows you to better zip .wav music files without compromising the integrity of the file or its sound quality. What's more, if you need to open a .BZ2 or .RAR file, WinZip can now be your tool of choice.

If you depend on WinZip Pro's Job Wizard to back up data sets, archive important documents, or distribute information to others on a regular basis, you'll appreciate the enhancements available in WinZip 11.0 Pro. Now you can configure the Job Wizard to email the log file and/or resulting Zip file automatically after completion, use our new "browse" feature to find a specific folder on an FTP server, and select custom jobs directly from the Job Wizard and Quick Pick menus.

Firefox 2.0.0.3 updates security, stability

On March 20, Mozilla Corporation released new security and stability updates for both versions of its Firefox browser and for its Internet application suite, SeaMonkey. The new updates eliminate a situation where a malicious web page hosted on a specially-coded FTP server could exploit a minor FTP PASV port-scanning vulnerability to perform a rudimentary port-scan of machines inside the victim's firewall. By itself this causes no harm, but information about an internal network may be useful to an attacker should there be other vulnerabilities present on the network, a spokesperson said. The FTP protocol includes the PASV (passive) command, which is used by Firefox to request an alternate data port. The specification of the FTP protocol allows the server response to include an alternate server address as well, although this is rarely used in practice, but Mozilla clients will now ignore the alternate server address.
