29.11.2006HP and Staples Charged With Breaking Antitrust Law
A U.S. man has filed suit against office-products retailer Staples Inc. and printer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard Co. in federal court today, charging
that the two companies broke antitrust laws in collaborating on the sale of replacement ink-jet printer cartridges. In a lawsuit filed in U.S.
District Court in Boston, Ranjit Bedi charged that they had reached "an illegal agreement between competitors to stop competing" when HP paid
Staples, the biggest U.S. specialty retailer of office supplies, "market development funds" to stop selling non-HP-branded ink-jet printer
cartridges for HP printers.

06.02.2009HP shows off future printing technologies
Hewlett-Packard gave a look into future printing technologies, introducing a new inkjet printer that prints thousands of pages per minute and ink that
retains its shine even when exposed to extreme elements.
HP's water-based Latex Ink is specially formulated to embed in a
surface and become part of a media print, said Stephen Nigro, senior vice president of HP's graphics and imaging business. HP's Latex Ink can
withstand snow and rain and is useful for large-format media used on billboards and outdoor signs.

11.03.2008Printer Manufacturers Turn to Cryptography
It's no secret that printer
manufacturers such as HP,
Canon, Lexmark, and the rest
of the crowd sell their
printers for little to no
profit in order to attract
initial buyers. The real
profit comes from the sales of
ink cartridges that can,
sometimes, be sold for 50% of
the cost of the entire printer
itself.
In recent
years, however, "ink piracy"
has become a thorn in the side
of printer manufacturers as
they lose almost $3
billion a year to illegal ink
cartridges (refilled
cartridges sold as new,
reverse engineered cartridges,
and printers modified to
accept any cartridge). In an
effort to fight back,
Cryptography Research Inc,
(CRI) has stepped in with a
chip that would require the
user to use only manufacturer
sanctioned ink cartridges in
their printers.
Of
course, any kind of digital
protection is going to be
attacked by the thousands of
highly skilled hackers out
there. To help combat this
issue, the chip, called
CryptoFirewall, will generate
an individual code for each
and every ink cartridge
meaning would be hackers would
have to crack each new
cartridge manufactured. CRI
admits that it's system
won't completely eradicate
ink piracy, but that the
"system is designed to
recover from failure".

02.07.2007HP to gut nearly 8% of their workforce
Hewlett Packard CEO Mark Hurd decided that HP's future was in the more lucrative world of corporate service contracts when they purchased
Electronic Data Systems in May of this year. That move placed them in direct competition with IBM, who also started with personal computers before
specializing in corporate service contracts. In order to fully integrate EDS, HP has decided that 24,600 people have to go. HP believes that these job
losses will make them more competitive each year to the tune of nearly $2 billion although there will be one-time costs of nearly the same amount
to settle accounts with their departing employees (and other goodwill adjustments). When Hurd became HP's CEO in 2005, he began a downsizing of
nearly 15,000 employees in order to maximize profits in the face of ever-shrinking personal computer margins. Their strongest profit area, despite
additional competition, remains in printer ink.

06.02.2007HP could be violating US trade restrictions with Iran
HP has recently come under fire from the Boston Globe, who have reported that Redington Gulf, a third-party based in Dubai has been selling HP
printers in Iran for 11 years, since 1997. HP has partnered with them, but if the partnership began with knowledge that printers will be sold in
Iran by Redington Gulf, HP could face trade sanctions, as the US currently prohibits exports to Iran. HP claims that it fully complies with US export
laws, but further investigation yielded conflicting answers. In the late 1990s, before the partnership began, an HP executive had talked about sales
in Iran and HP's desire to be in the market.

30.12.2008HP Releases Multi-level Security Services for RHEL5
There is security, and then there is Security. HP, with its new multi-level security services for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is now offering Common
Criteria certified level security for this Linux on its server and desktops.
Common Criteria is an ISO security framework
standard. It is frequently required in government computing contracts. It is also, historically, difficult for open-source software to obtain, as
described briefly in "
Free-Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS)
and Software Assurance" (PDF Link) by David A. Wheeler, an author and software developer.
Erik Lillestolen, HP's government
program manager for the
open-source & Linux
organization, hopes that these new offerings will help get not just HP computers, but Red Hat Linux as well into secure federal government
offices.

01.11.2007Kodak Printers Breed Cheap Ink
In March, Kodak will introduce
three printers, priced at
$149.99, $199.99 and
$299.99, that use much
cheaper ink - the move is
expected to put pressure on
the company's rivals.
Unveiled in New York, the
three All-in-One EasyShare
printers boast low-priced
black ($9.99) and color
ink ($14.99) cartridges,
as opposed to the typical
$30 price tag. " After
today, the inkjet market will
never be the same ," Kodak
CEO Antonio Perez said. The
company believes the high cost
of ink limited more
printing.
Market-leading printer
companies, including
Hewlett-Packard, Epson and
Canon, have enjoyed up to a
70% profit selling ink. That
revenue is under thread by
lower-cost, after-market ink
which, according to Lyra
Research, comprises from
30-40% of the market. In
China, 90% of the ink is sold
by non-brand-name suppliers.
The ink prices will allow
consumers to produce 10-cent
prints. Printing digital
pictures at home, which is now
around 25 cents per photo,
will equal that of online
printing services, said Lyra
Research President, Charles
LeCompte.

a complete, pre-configured, ready to plug in and get-to-work datacenter in six weeks. Try that with a traditional brick and mortar solution.
