Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web

Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.

The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

Customers get a supercomputer on the cheap

IBM ratcheted the world of supercomputing up a few notches in June with the Blue Gene/P, a system nearly three times as fast as its predecessor at a cost of US$1.3 million per rack.

But in anticipation of the Blue Gene/P, IBM dropped the price of the Blue Gene/L, to about $800,000 late last year, prompting sales of the older supercomputer to more than double during the first half of this year compared to the second half of 2006, says Herb Schultz, IBM's deep-computing marketing manager.

At its highest price, the Blue Gene/Lcost $1.3 million per rack, same as the P's current price.

"It's still a very viable platform," Schultz says. Among universities, "we've had some really big sales." He named Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and the State University of New York at Stony Brook as two new L-model customers...

Do-It-Yourself SSD Guide

Kevin O'Brien: Solid state disks (SSDs) are a flash-based memory storage device that carries an insane price premium in the current market. They will usually cost $600 to $1,000 as an upgrade from the manufacturer or computer parts store, making them outside the price range of many consumers. A new cheaper (slightly slower) option is available thanks to low-cost, high-capacity flash cards. This option is using a cheap compact flash to SATA adapter, and purchasing a moderately fast memory card that would fill your storage needs.

For this review I aimed to keep the price less than $100 just to show how affordable this option could be.

Core i7 on a budget: MSI X58 Pro-E review

Perhaps the biggest problem we saw with initial Intel X58 motherboards was their substantial price. Add to that the serious price premium for DDR3 memory, and you ended up with a relatively affordable and fast Core i7 920 processor that nevertheless needed to run on an expensive platform. The recent drop in DDR3 pricing got us thinking about the affordability of the Core i7 platform, and we began to wonder just how cheap users could build one of these systems. MSI has quietly been preparing an army of Core i7 motherboards, now with five unique models on offer, we feel they may have what we're after.

Like having 2 graphics cards? How about 4? And why not add 4 CPU cores too...

About a year ago if you asked a PC building enthusiast what processor to use, he/she would probably have pointed you toward a slick 64-bit AMD chip which at the time was some of the best performance at a sweet price, win-win right?

That all changed when the Intel Core 2 Duo chips came out with better performance and even lower price points. The Intel fanboys rejoiced as the top spot had returned to the chip making giant. To this day Intel has remained in the lead with multiple iterations of the Core 2 Duo architecture with increased speeds and even doubling the cores (Quad Core chips) thus solidifying their top dog status.

AMD, however, has not given up... not by a longshot. While we all have waited to see the results of their ATi acquisition, today I had the chance to check it out firsthand. That's right, folks, AMD has its own triple-play to show off: new true quad core 64 bit CPU--the Phenom, a new Radeon 3800 series set graphic cards, and to support it all... a fancy new chipset known as "Spider."
