Microsoft's Big Bet: Win Within the Web

Although the latest version of Microsoft Windows is more than six months from shipping, company brass already have christened Vista as the best and biggest Windows release since Windows 95.

The company is making bold predictions, claiming Vista will be preloaded on as many as 200 million new personal computers in the first 24 months that the product is available. Windows 95 shipped on a mere 67 million new PCs during its first two years. These numbers are important. The prospects of nearly every product Microsoft makes ride on maintaining the ubiquity of Windows, which has in excess of 90 percent of the PC operating system market. It's been five years since the current Windows version was released, and Windows XP now is looking rather dated.

However, the analyst firm warned that the risk remains of consumers perceiving these devices as just very expensive feature phones.

In-Stat noted that a major problem affecting the appeal of smartphones is that many users do not download applications that make them more useful after they leave the store.

How to Build (or win) a Tiny Windows Home Server

Donavon from Home Server Hacks has put together instructions on how to build a tiny little Windows Home Server using an ARTiGO Pico-ITX kit. It's an interesting read and an especially good pick if your main concern is low power consumption - the Pico uses a staggering 13-watts of power at idle. While the board isn't the most plug and play compatible hardware out there for Home Server, this will show you how to make it work.

War breaks out between AdBlock Plus and NoScript

A quiet war has broken out between the authors of AdBlock Plus and NoScript and money is on the table. Both are trying to outdo each other by disabling each other's functionality. The issue at stake is NoScript's behavior of showing a changelog window whenever it gets a new update, which of late has been updated rather frequently. And unsurprisingly, that changelog window is filled with ads that generate revenue for NoScript. AdBlock Plus on the other hand is commited to blocking ads regardless of where they are from; and this has treaded on the tail of the author of NoScript.

Windows Live Mail Desktop (Build 1172)

The Windows Live Mail desktop Team has released another beta refresh of their application - Build 1172.

This from the Windows Live Mail Desktop Blog: Well, it's been over a month since we released an update - and the team has been diligently working on fixing lots (and I mean, lots) of bugs! All in all, we've fixed hundreds of bugs since the last build that our Beta testers received! I think when you install this latest build, you will likely see improvements all over the product - but, as usual, there are a few areas I'd like to specifically point out so you can try them out and give them a real run for their money!

Windows 7 build 7229 leaked

Another Windows 7 build has leaked. This time it's build 7229. Sources are indicating that unless there is a leak internally from Microsoft, this would be last build leaked before the RTM. The build string is 7229.0.090604-1901 meaning that it was compiled a week ago. Earlier this week, build 7227 leaked to the public. Initial reports indicate that you can not use your RC keys with this build, so if you want to activate properly you should not upgrade to this build. Windows 7 is still on track for a July RTM, and it's possible that it may even RTM by the end of June. Microsoft has announced that it will be available in stores October 22nd.

Windows Live Mail Desktop Update Available

Microsoft seems to have finally waken up with its Windows Live set of services: after months of incredible inactivity, the products offered in the Windows Live family have seen a whole lot of updates recently. After the beta refresh for Family Safety and a new Windows Live Messenger 8.1 build, it's Windows Live Mail Desktop's turn to step to another milestone.

The new version of the mail client, numbered as build 1223, appears to be mostly a "bug fixes update", except for a completely revamped login screen. Further changes are still unknown at this time since the product team has not yet released a changelog.

If you are looking into filing bugs concerning Windows Live Mail Desktop, it is recommended by the developers that you use the recently created Microsoft Connect public beta program to do so instead of the Windows Live website because of the added flexibility it offers.

Thanks to VistaReloaded for the heads up!

Barely two weeks after build 7127 leaked we have another fresh leak of Windows 7, build 7137. This time around the build tag is 7137.0.090521-1745 meaning this build is only a week old. As ever the build is available at the usual places but it might be worth waiting until RTM as a lot of Windows 7 torrents have been hit by malware and viruses recently. Microsoft is still on target to finalise Windows 7 over the summer with a general availability this fall. Un-official wallpaper not included by default, thanks to djlegion for the screenshots.

Windows 7 build 7022 leaks

Microsoft are currently working hard towards the Release Candidate of Windows 7. Currently the only official build available to testers and the general public is build 7000 but we have learned that 7022 has leaked to the internet today. According to a Russian torrent site it was leaked by "friendly" Microsoft Ukraine individuals. It's not likely that the build contains any of the UAC changes Microsoft has recently promised. The build is Build 7022.winmain.090115-1850 which indicates it was built nearly a month ago. Some Microsoft employees have twittered recently that they were "installing build 7034" so the company is clearly pushing ahead with the builds ready for the upcoming Release Candidate.

Windows Vista Build 5219 to be released at MS PDC

Microsoft will tomorrow release a refreshed build of Windows Vista at it's Professional Developer's Conference.

Thi s build is 5219.

No. It is not Beta 2. No. It is not Beta 1. Yes. It is newer than Beta 1. It is a pre-beta-2 build.

Screenshots leaked onto the internet earlier today have led people to erroneously claim that the 5219 build compiled on 050824 (24 August, 2005) is the build that will be released at PDC.

This is untrue. Contrary to popular belief, every new build generated is not necessarily automatically incremented by 1. If this were true, the correct 5219 build (more on that below) would have been one compiled before 050824. Thus the 5219 050824 build would not exist. We have confirmed that the 0824 build is a legitimate build which was issued to OEM partners for testing. Did you leak these screenshots IBM as you did the screenshots of the 5203 build?

Build 5219 compiled on 050830 (30 August 2005) is the one that will be released at PDC.

How is that possible? Simple. Microsoft compiled mutiple builds of 5219 over the period of at least a week before finally declaring 050830 as the final build for 5219.

Among the changes from 0824 to 0830 is the fact that the sidebar visible in 0824 has been removed in the 0830 build.
