20.03.2008Gartner: Windows collapsing under its own weight;
Radical change needed
Microsoft’s Windows juggernaut is collapsing as it tries to support 20 years of applications and becomes more
complicated by the minute. Meanwhile, Windows has outgrown hardware and customers are pondering skipping Vista to wait for Windows 7. If Windows is
going to remain relevant it will need radical changes.
That sobering outlook comes courtesy of Gartner analysts Michael Silver and Neil
MacDonald. Half of a full room of IT managers and executives raised their hands when asked whether Microsoft needed to radically change its approach
to Windows. “Windows is too monolithic,” says Silver.
Silver also gave another anecdotal point to show the conundrum Microsoft
is in: Clients are calling him to ask whether they should skip Vista entirely and wait for Windows 7, which promises to be more modular and
potentially lightweight. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has also found
an impact on
Vista from all of the Windows 7 chatter. Silver’s recommendation: Go with Vista but on an attrition basis. As XP PCs die, replace them with
Vista PCs

04.03.2009McAfee says Vista's StickyKeys could be misused
A Windows feature designed to
simplify computing for
disabled users could be
misused in Vista, a McAfee
researcher reported Monday.
Attackers could use this
feature, called StickyKeys, to
trick a user into launching
unauthorized software on the
Vista machine, according to
Vinoo Thomas, a McAfee
researcher who blogged about
the issue on Monday.
StickyKeys is launched when a
Windows user hits a modifier
key like Shift or Alt five
times. This makes the modifier
key "sticky" so commands
like Shift-F1 can be launched
without having to hit two keys
simultaneously.
An
attacker could replace the
sethc.exe file used to launch
StickyKeys with some other
executable, like the Windows
command utility, Thomas wrote.
This backdoor vulnerability
was already known to exist in
Windows 2000 and Windows XP,
according to Thomas.Although
it is interesting that Vista
is also vulnerable, it's not
clear how useful the backdoor
would be to an attacker
because one must first gain
access to the machine in order
to replace the StickyKeys
file. Thomas believes that it
could be used by an inside
attacker to bypass log-in on
terminal servers and
workstations. Microsoft
executives were not
immediately available to
comment on the issue.

25.05.2006Vista SP1 to Replace 'Reduced Functionality'
A service originally designed to compel unpaid Vista users to obtain genuine licenses is apparently being scrapped in Service Pack 1, to be
replaced with a more "in-your-face" approach.
In a prepared Q&A released by Microsoft this morning, corporate vice
president for Windows product marketing Mike Sievert divulged that Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM) -- a service that disables certain features of
Windows Vista until the user activates the system, assuming she can -- will be scrapped in Service Pack 1. In its place will be something that reduces
the user's experience instead.
"Although our overall strategy remains the same, with SP1 we're adjusting the customer
experience that differentiates genuine from non-genuine systems in Windows Vista and later in Windows Server," Siever stated.
"Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to
get genuine. They won't lose access to functionality or features, but it will be very clear to them that their copy of Windows Vista is not genuine
and they need to take action."
