Windows Vista Beta 1 vs. Mac OS X "Tiger

From Paul Thurrotte's SuperSite:

In part one of my comparison of Windows Vista Beta 1 and Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger," I looked at three key aspects of each system: Look and feel, desktop search, and data visualization and organization. For the most part, OS X came out well ahead of Windows Vista, as you'd expect, since it's a polished finished product. Vista, meanwhile, is all knees and elbows, an awkward teenager on its way to maturity.

. Microsoft will iron out the details, I'm sure, but the end result will likely not change much. Specifically, OS X will always be elegant, and Windows will almost certainly lag behind in the fit and finish department. The only questions are how much Vista will improve when compared to previous Windows versions, and whether it will be enough to keep customers from moving to OS X.

50 Reasons to switch from Windows to OS X?

Or, a lost sheep’s ongoing struggle to stay relevant in this internet age. Now don't get me wrong, I have always had quite a lot of respect for Chris Pirillo, but something happened when Microsoft talked up Longhorn and eventually shipped Vista. Chris was enraged most of the time because the promise of "Longhorn 2003" never happened, and I think he probably feels that Microsoft cheated themselves, and him out of a worthwhile upgrade. Ever since, he hasn't involved himself in Microsoft (lab) events and has become quite outspoken against Windows Vista.

From John's AbsoluteVista Blog: In a post last week, on St. Valentine’s Day no less, Chris Pirillo states his 50 reasons to switch from Windows (any version?) to OS X.

After getting past his preamble about neutrality, he delivers his thoughts. Actually, we are supposed to take his thoughts as neutral since it is not a Windows bash. Furthermore, since in his opening statements he declared his relationships with some sponsors, we should take the product plugs as gospel. Feel free to ingest a grain/several grains of salt with his recommendations.

I have taken it upon myself to provide a public service by attempting to debunk some of the outright errors, factual errors, product plugs, and gross misconceptions in his beliefs.

How Vista screws dual-booting nirvana

Declan Kennedy at APC Magazine has written an interesting analysis looking at Microsoft's suspicious lack of advancement in OS boot technique.

Put simply, Vista will still overwrite the master boot record with no regard for any other boot loader that may be present.

But Kennedy also describes how, with the right boot loader configuration, you can setup a dual-boot system that allows you to switch between Windows and Linux without having to reboot either OS, using hibernation.

His observations open up interesting possibilities for Mac users too. Boot Camp would be considerably more useful if it didn't involve closing all applications and fully restarting the system each time. If it were just a case of sleeping one OS to switch to the other, it'd be the next best thing to perfect virtualisation. Will Apple implement this in time for Panther?..

It not only provides easy access to applications, but allows the user to organize them to their taste within the Dock. Any file or app can be attached to the Dock.

Small Businesses Switch to Vista Fastest, Study Says

Nearly half of businesses are in some phase of preparing to update desktops to Windows Vista, with small businesses moving the fastest to implement the OS, according to a xreport released last week. The number of organizations evaluating and testing Vista increased from 29 percent in February 2007 to 48 percent by early November 2007, found the report, commissioned by reseller CDW and based on information collected by Walker Information from 772 IT decision makers. Moreover, about 35 percent of companies are currently implementing or have implemented Vista already, compared to 12 percent last February, the report said. The report is the third of a wave of reports on Vista adoption that CDW has done since the OS was in its final testing phases in October 2006. In the latest phase of release, which tracked Vista adoption from October 31 until Nov. 7, 2007, small businesses comprised 53 percent of those companies either using or evaluating Vista. The higher-education segment came in second, with 49 percent reporting that they are evaluating or using the OS, while medium-to-large businesses were third, with 48 percent.

DTV likely delayed till June 12

The Senate Republicans and Obama have been pushing the need to keep analog signals online instead of switching all television transmissions to digital, to free up wireless spectrum, meaning that we could see a delay in the switch. It would seem after reports of the delay, and with the FCC backing to prevent the switch, it is likely the Senate will postpone it. A new bill has been presented to delay the switch of DTV till June 12, 2009 because too many Americans, up to 6.5 million households, are not prepared for the switch. The original bill was passed by Congress in 2005, mandating that the switch would be February 17, 2009.

Microsoft plots embedded OS futures

In his keynote at the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) last month, Kevin Dallas, GM of Microsoft's Windows Embedded unit, tipped some of his group's future product plans. Included are new versions of Windows CE 6.0 and Windows XP Embedded, plus the arrival of "Windows Vista Embedded."

Before detailing these, Dallas began his talk by providing "examples of where we could improve as an industry." Devices need to be service-aware, he said, citing telephony and navigation as examples.

It should be possible to use a mobile device to receive a phone call at home via VoIP (voice over IP), have it automatically switch to a WAN (and hands-free operation) when moved to a car, then seamlessly switch over to a corporate WLAN at the office, said Dallas. Similarly, he added, navigation devices ought to move information from a PC, to a mobile device, to an in-car system automatically.

OLPC laptop gets a Windows makeover

On the outside, the Windows version of the XO laptop looks just like the Linux model. But simply booting up the device shows the Windows version bears little resemblance to the original One Laptop per Child device. The Microsoft version offers Windows, and can run basically any software that can adjust itself to the mini-laptop's diminutive screen and modest processor.

Microsoft has managed to slim down the OS enough to boot up off a 2GB flash memory card and has written drivers for a number of the XO laptop's unique features, such as its scratch pad, game controller, and built-in camera.

The Linux model comes with an integrated suite of educational games, programming tools, and other software, all built around a kid-friendly OS shell known as Sugar. The Windows version of the XO doesn't have so much of that child-orientated personality — although a child-orientated programming tool known as Scratch did survive the Linux-to-Windows switch. But having Windows allows students to take advantage not only of Microsoft's dominant Office suite, but of all the educational software that has already been written for Windows.

Office 2007 Also Has Kill Switch

Apparently Microsoft is putting the same kind of 'kill switch' into Office 2007 that is reportedly being used by Vista. The kill switch limits the program's functionality once activation has been bypassed a certain number of times.

But now Microsoft's intentions are clear: Just as it is doing with Vista, Microsoft plans to incorporate what basically amounts to a 'kill switch' into Office 2007. Office 2007 users who can't or won't pass activation muster within a set time period will be moved into "reduced-functionality mode", according to Microsoft's Knowledge Base article.

Evidence mounting: Windows 7 going modular, subscription

When Windows 7 launches sometime after the start of 2010, the desktop OS will be Microsoft's most "modular" yet. Having never really been comfortable with the idea of a single, monolithic desktop OS offering, Microsoft has offered multiple desktop OSes in the marketplace ever since the days of Windows NT 3.1, with completely different code bases until they were unified in Windows 2000. Unification isn't necessarily a good thing, however. Windows Vista is a sprawling, complex OS.

A singular yet highly modular OS could give Microsoft the best of all possible worlds: OSes that can be highly customized for deployment, but developed monolithically. One modular OS to rule them all, let's say.

Another CNet Blogger Says No to Vista (SP1)

Those guys over at CNet really have it in for Vista, this time it's Robert Vamosi suggesting that users that are waiting for SP1 to make the switch will be disappointed. In all fairness it lacks the flair of the SP2 release on Windows XP which came with new features such as a new Internet Explorer version and several security enhancements. SP1 for Vista is no more than a roll up package of everything released on Windows Update until now.

What Robert fails to mention is that a few performance enhancements are also included in the update that significantly speed up the OS and are only available through Microsoft Downloads, which requires the Windows Genuine Advantage Check. Service Pack 2 for XP was a one-off, due to the repeated set backs of Vista, Microsoft were forced to include technologies already planned for Windows Vista, before SP2 Microsoft stressed time and time again that Service Packs usually do not offer new features.

SP1 will be a welcome update for those that opted to switch when Vista became available, performance and reliability have always been a talking point from the very beginning and I am confident that SP1 fixes those issues (even for those that have already applied the updates)
