I hate Macs

Unless you have been walking around with your eyes closed, and your head encased in a block of concrete, with a blindfold tied round it, in the dark - unless you have been doing that, you surely can't have failed to notice the current Apple Macintosh campaign starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which has taken over magazines, newspapers and the internet in a series of brutal coordinated attacks aimed at causing massive loss of resistance.

Bang On: It's easy to hate the Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 has had quite a poor record when it comes to build quality. My experience with Microsoft's wonder console does little to change what so many people already know: The Xbox 360 is more fragile than paper-mâché in a rain storm. It's almost as though simply glancing at the console in the wrong way can send it into cardiac arrest. It's just so easy to hate it. I've already complained about my excruciatingly frustrating experience with Xbox support, so we can all rejoice in the fact that this tale does not include any dealings with them. Working for a major retailer, I've had the extended warranty, from the store, since day one.

Facebook kills anti-Muslim group

Facebook has disabled an anti-Islamic group called "I Hate Muslims in Oz" after the issue was brought to their attention by CNet's Chris Matyszczyk. Facebook's stance toward Holocaust-denying groups is more ambivalent. The company's terms of service prohibit content that is "hateful" or "threatening", and, according to Matyszczyk, Facebook does not consider simply denying that the Holocaust happened to be "hateful" or "threatening". Facebook's Barry Schnitt clarifies the situation: "We disabled the 'I Hate Muslims in Oz' group a day or so ago because it contained an explicit statement of hate.

EU MPs to ISPs: Take hate sites offline

A group of European Parliament members have submitted a draft declaration to the European Parliament requiring ISPs to better monitor the content of the sites they host in order to keep hate speech off the web. The five European (from the UK, Hungary and Germany) MPs sponsoring the declaration would like to see racism and hate speech banished from the Internet completely, starting with Europe. Should European ISPs not go along, the MPs will try to get the European Commission to enact legislation on the issue. The MPs hope the EC uses the Safer Internet Plus program, which intends to " promote safer use of the Internet " while fighting against " illegal content and content unwanted by " end users.

Bang On: I love Windows Mobile

It's still pretty cool to hate Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. With the iPhone and Android getting so much attention and feeling so new, the aging mobile OS from Redmond can tend to feel dated and unintuitive. Sometimes it's enough to make you question what you did so wrong to be deserving of such frustration. Here's the catch, though: I love Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile is just like most other software products that Microsoft produces. The out of box experience is anything less than extraordinary. If the iPhone "just works", then a standard Windows Mobile installation just makes you want to put your head through a wall.

MS: How we really designed the look and feel of Windows 7

Brandon LeBlanc: An inaccurate quote has been floating around the Internet today about the design origins of Windows 7 and whether its look and feel was "borrowed" from Mac OS X.  Unfortunately this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7. I hate to say this about one of our own, but his comments were inaccurate and uninformed...

Don't worry, iPhone hackers: Apple doesn't hate you

It's really an ethical dilemma for the ages. On one hand, you love your shiny new Apple toy so much, you just have to hack in new functionality, on the other hand you can't bear to think that the mighty Steve Jobs thinks ill of you and your hacker ways.

Well now you can finally put those fears to rest, because Apple's Greg Joswiak has officially confirmed a "neutral" stance on the iPhone hacking issue. That is to say, Apple doesn't plan to maliciously attempt to break native, third-party applications in forthcoming firmware updates, but at the same time Apple won't go out of its way to ensure those updates don't break third-party applications accidentally, and certainly isn't offering support to the hackers of any kind. We'd say it's a step above "frenemy," but not quite to the point where Steve'll be demoing Jailbreak at his next keynote.

XP Gets Yet Another Life

Escaping the grasp of death once again, Windows XP gets another 5 years of life! While they still plan to end mainstream support for Windows XP Pro on April 14, 2009, HP says that Microsoft is still giving OEMs the option to install XP on their machines for one more year, until April 30, 2010.

XP Extended Support (strictly security updates; nothing else) will; run all the way until April 8, 2014! They say that they hate extending dates time and time again, and strongly encourage customers to upgrade to Vista (at least) or Windows 7. But with all these extensions, maybe somewhere deep down in the heart of Redmond, there's a bit of nostalgia that just can't let go of good ol' Windows XP.

Windows Vista: Hit or Miss with Small Business

After half a decade of development and more than a few (expected) delays, Windows Vista was released to retail customers a year ago this past January 30.

In addition to improved security, a slick new interface, integrated search and hundreds of other features, Vista also came with fairly demanding performance requirements, slow boot-up times, sluggish performance and (expected) bugs.

So how is Vista faring among small businesses a year after its launch? As with many Microsoft products that came before it, Vista evokes a classic either-love-it-or-hate it response.

Takahashi: Let's hope Vista's successor does better

The love-hate relationship between Microsoft and its users has always centered on the performance of its operating system. And during the past year, Windows Vista has given us reasons to be both positive and negative about the future of the PC.

Before it came out in January, Vista got good reviews, though some critics complained that Microsoft should have taken bigger steps to change the look and functions of Windows, much as it did with Office 2007.

But as the year wore on, there were reports about bugs and security issues. And then came the insultingly titled book "Windows Vista Annoyances" by tech writer David Karp. Computer industry pundits, including John Dvorak, Rob Enderle, Richard Doherty and Roger Kay have criticized Microsoft both for not going far enough with Vista and for making it so bloated it was visibly slow at performing various tasks.

Mounting WIM Images from Windows Explorer

Robert McLaws: Over the course of my Windows Server 2008 testing, I've had to do a fair amount of work with WIM files. The problem is, that works comes in fits and starts, and I really hate having to keep looking up the syntax for mounting WIM images using ImageX.

This morning, I was preparing to move my web hosting environment yet again , which means I have to build new ISOs with my unattended settings files yet again . So I decided to make life a little bit easier. I'll let the picture explain what it does, then I'll explain what you need to do...

If Windows is a dead end, what's next?

The writing is on the wall. Despite a major push to sell the much-maligned Windows Vista, customers aren't buying. Nearly two years after Vista's release, Windows XP remains the standard desktop OS in business, and Microsoft has extended its availability three times (currently to August 2009) due to customer demand. Microsoft itself forecasts just 2 percent growth in Vista sales in early 2009, after lackluster sales in 2008. And that's after forcing customers to buy Vista to get XP "downgrades."

So all eyes were on Microsoft's Professional Developer Conference in Los Angeles last week as Microsoft finally took the wrap off Windows 7, the successor to Vista due in early 2010. But early reaction is that Windows 7 is just a cleaned-up Vista. It's essentially the same kernel and the same OS, with a couple new technologies thrown in, such as the Surface-based multitouch capabilities and the ability for developers to ribbon-bar-enable their own apps for better consistency with Microsoft's new UI approach (one that people either seem to love or hate). "It's not anything radical," says Neil MacDonald, a Gartner analyst who follows Microsoft. "It's a polished version of Vista."

Winsize2 Remembers Your Preferred Window Sizes

Free, open-source utility Winsize2 sets up a single keyboard combination to remember, and change, the preferred size and positioning of your Windows applications. In other words, if you hate how your browser opens up to seemingly random sizes, or full-screen instead of windowed, have Winsize2 running and hit Ctrl+Alt+Z (or, on some systems, with Y as the final key). That locks down the apps' size and place, and hitting the combination again will over-write that preference if you like another position better...

Love it or hate it, Windows Vista is here to stay as the default operating system for those buying PC laptops on the market today.
