Secure Your PS3 Network Name Now

Sony promised that users around the world hoping to buy a PS3 could register their online name on launch day, this promise, although kept, has been released a month late, but of course, is very welcome to those in the UK and Australia who won't see their PS3s till March next year.

Everyone around the world can register an account, expect to see names for sale on eBay as people snap up some of the l33t account names. You can only register one account to one address it seems at the moment, and this is not changeable as yet.

Whether this is used or abused I'm just glad I snapped up "cashman" before anyone else did.

Browsers Still Vulnerable to Command Injection Attacks, Hackers Say

Nathan McFeters and Rob Carter want you to know that it's not over - even if an initial fix to block command injection attacks was released in the last few days.

"It's not done. There's going to be more stack overflows, more ccommand injections," McFeters says. "It gets scarier as you go on. We want to make third party developers aware that when you register URI you are creating an attack environment."

Firefox and Netxcape Navigator 9 register URIs to be compliant with Windows Vista, so they are now vulnerable to command injection when called from the IE, says Rob Carter, who with McFeters runs the xs-sniper.com site where this is discussed in detail.

@live.com Addresses: The Story Continues...

The war that has been raging between users and Microsoft for @live.com e-mail addresses appears to be far from finished: yet another trick appeared today letting users register the long-awaited addresses. This is nothing more than another unofficial way to register such accounts, so hurry up before Microsoft blocks the hole again!

Doing this is pretty easy, assuming you are using Mozilla Firefox. First, head to Windows Live Custom Domains, and select Get Started, then "Use a domain I already own". Type anything you want in the field that appears, and select "Create a new Windows Live ID in your domain". Then, when the signup page finally loads, hit View in your browser's options, go to Page Style, and select "No style". The normal @live.com field will appear, and you can now create your new Windows Live ID!

Windows Server 2008 DNS Block Feature

Windows Server 2008 introduces a DNS block feature that may affect the ISA Server automatic discovery when implementing the WPAD mechanism using a Windows Server 2008 DNS Server.

The block feature provides a global query block list to reduce vulnerability associated with dynamic DNS updates. Dynamic update makes it possible for DNS client computers to register and dynamically update their resource records with a DNS server whenever a client changes its network address or host name. This reduces the need for manual administration of zone records, especially for clients that frequently move or change locations and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. This convenience comes at a cost, however, because an authorized client can register any unused host name, even a host name that might have special significance for certain applications. This can allow a malicious user to "hijack" a special name and divert certain types of network traffic to that user's computer. WPAD is a commonly deployed protocol vulnerable to this type of hijacking, and by default WPAD look up is disabled by the blocking mechanism.
