HTC Lancaster to be AT&T's first Android handset

According to Engadget, AT&T looks set to tap into the Android action through the release of the HTC Lancaster. As of now, the only mobile operator in the United States to offer an Android handset is T-Mobile. AT&T will have a vast repertoire of handsets running almost all major mobile OSs, including Palm's webOS when the Palm Eos handset gets released within the second half of the year. According to the slide obtained by Engadget, its date of availability is expected to be the third of August, which is a little more than two months from now. However, since AT&T is requesting an "AT&T Standard UI", the schedule is "in question".

Google releases new Android SDK

Google released a new version of the software developer kit for its Android mobile open development platform on Wednesday.

The new SDK has a new user interface, a geocoder that lets developers search for businesses as well as translate an address into a coordinate and vice versa, support for new media codecs, and code that lets developers create layout animations. One thing missing is change to the telephony package, laments one developer on the Android Developer discussion on Google Groups.

Google Android netbooks on their way

Matthäus Krzykowski & Daniel Hartmann have successfully ported Google's mobile operating system, Android, to a desktop operating system. The Android's Linux core has helped them to achieve this. The work started when a Google developer, Dima Zavin claimed at the Android Porting Google Group that he ported Android to an Asus EeePC 701. As Zavin had compiled against an Intel CPU, it turned out to be pretty simple for Matthäus and Daniel to port Android to an Asus EEEPC 1000H.

Future of Android 'Cupcake' update uncertain

A hotly-rumored branch of updates to the Android operating system that goes by the unusual moniker "cupcake" may not be released to the public.

AndroidTapp received a message from the T-Mobile Forums admin which was traced all the way back to Google via T-Mobile's Product Development and PR departments. In the message it said, "According to the Android team, "Cupcake," which is the code name for an Android software build, is still a work in progress that is considered to be a development branch and not for general availability."

While still not more than a rumor, the very existence of the Cupcake branch and its ability to bring video camera functions and an onscreen keyboard to the T-Mobile G1, is still only rumor as well...

New Android commercial attacks iPhone

Verizon released a new commercial which takes shots at the missing features for the iPhone. The website droiddoes.com has a countdown timer to the release of the new Android 2.0 mobile phone. The ad attacks a variety of things Apple doesn't do or won't do on the iPhone. The advertisement attacks Apple's oversights on the iPhone like a real keyboard, running simultaneous applications, being customizable, allowing widgets, open source development and interchangeable batteries. The advertisement also takes a stab at the iPhone's camera, saying the Android based phone will have a 5MP camera and will be able to take pictures in the dark. The Android 2.0 phone will release this November on Verizon.

Ever since Google and T-Mobile launched the T-Mobile G1 users have been able to connect to the Android Marketplace to download applications both free and paid. The first version of the marketplace felt inspired by the days of command line interfaces with only icons, descriptions and user reviews available. With the release of Android 1.6 users saw some big changes to the Android Marketplace with a more updated interface. Instead of the black and white interface, users were presented with a graphical interface to view and download the latest and greatest Android application from a host of developers.
