19.10.2009Simple guide to test Vista SP1 RC1 on a separate partition
Long Zheng: A couple of people, dozen at max, have expressed interest in testing out the
soon-to-be-public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate release. There are many ways of installing and testing
operating systems and even more so service packs so it can be rather confusing and cumbersome experience for some people out there. Out of all the
possibilities, I do myself and recommend everyone to always start fresh, but that doesnt always mean from the command prompt.
Whilst release candidate will be a very good representation of the final product early next year, it still means youll have to forfeit this
release sooner or later so it is not recommended you replace your existing Windows installation with it. Especially with all the problems people have
been running into uninstalling their service pack betas which itself sounds like a really bad idea anyway, its ideal to set up a fresh install. And
the most convenient fresh install is on a separate partition on existing disks.
Formerly the process of splitting a partition
involved third-party software which is time-consuming and sometimes unreliable, however a less-known disk management function in Windows Vista will
simplify all that.

23.05.2007Intel's BIOS tool spells death bell for third party utilities
ECS is showing
Intel's backup utility called
the System Recovery Tool.
This utility sits inside
the BIOS of a motherboard that
of course, sports Intel's
latest chipsets. The
application features partition
and disk image backup and
recovery, just like a lot of
third-party applications.
However, being built inside
the BIOS, it has the advantage
of not needing any sort of
boot or recovery CDs, rather
pressing a function key (F3 in
the case of ECS's boards) on
a keyboard.
The image
creation process is very
simple - press the F3 key,
pick the option Create new
image, choose what partition
will be backed up and the
destination (different
partition, CD, DVD medium).
You can expect this
feature to come on many
motherboards in near future.

08.06.2007Apple Updates Boot Camp Software
Apple has updated its beta
Boot Camp software to version
1.1.2. The software lets
owners of Intel Macs install
Windows XP on their Mac in a
separate partition, allowing
users to choose which
operating system to boot up to
on startup. The new version
offers support for all the
latest Intel-based Macs, and
also makes it easier to
partition hard disks for the
installation of Windows XP by
offering partitioning
presets.
Boot Camp
1.1.2 lets users install
Windows XP on any internal
disk; adds support for
built-in iSight cameras and
microphones; supports Apple's
USB modem, trackpad scrolling
and right-clicking on a
notebook; and furnishes
improved keyboard support.
Apple notes that
installation is relatively
painless: "If you previously
installed Boot Camp beta, you
can easily update to Boot Camp
1.1.2 beta. You don't need to
partition your hard drive
again (unless you want to
change its size) or reinstall
your Macintosh and Windows
software or documents, but
it's very important to update
the Boot Camp Assistant
software, create a new
Macintosh Drivers for Windows
CD and install the updated
software it contains on
Windows XP."

04.03.2009Microsoft Expands XBLA File Size to 250 MB
The Xbox Live Arcade file size
was capped at 50 MB to

consumers had to use one of
Microsoft's memory cards).
Under
condition of anonymity,
sources revealed that the file

Microsoft's approval, that
size can be expanded to 450
MB.
When
asked for comment on the

speculation and so we can not
confirm that rumor. Aside from
the exception we granted for
'Castlevania: Symphony of the

any plans to alter the file
size standard for Xbox Live
Arcade games. However,
adjusting the size limit is
certainly an option in the
future, and as always, we are
listening to feedback both
from gamers and developers on
what will provide the best
user experience. Whatever
choice we make, we will hold a
position that provides for the
best possible Xbox Live Arcade
gameplay experience."

Datalight, Inc. today
announced support for the
Microsoft Windows Embedded CE
6.0 platform within its
patented data management

and FlashFX Pro can double
performance on Windows
Embedded CE 6.0 when
implemented together.
As embedded device
memory requirements grow more
complex, the case for
professional data management
software becomes more
compelling. Datalight FlashFX

for over 200 different flash
parts. Reliance is a file

control over performance
without risking data
corruption. When used
together, Reliance and FlashFX
Pro create a seamless flash
file system that vastly
outperforms native and "home
grown" solutions, with
performance increases for some
operations of over 200%.
FlashFX Pro
is ideally suited for projects
where performance cannot be
sacrificed. Test results have
shown that when using FlashFX
Pro in a Windows Embedded CE
6.0 environment, write
performance on NAND flash can
be increased by more than
200%, while read performance
improves by at least 20%...

21.05.2009Microsoft to Make Exceptions for Xbox Live Arcade Limitations
When Microsoft launched Xbox Live Arcade, it imposed a 50 MB
size cap on all releases on its service. The reason for this was to maintain
compatibility for Xbox 360 owners who do not own a model
with a hard drive.
At the time, a 64MB Memory Unit was the only
alternative,
explaining the need 50 MB limit. A year ago, Microsoft
released
a 512 MB Memory Unit, which
paved the way for the Xbox Live Arcade game
limit to
grow
to 150 MB. A 256 MB Memory Unit is
now standard issue on all
HDD-less

Even with the current Xbox Live Arcade limit three times what it used to be, some developers are finding 150MB
simply not enough to fit in all game assets, particularly those intended for 1080p resolutions.
