20.09.2008IE8 and Privacy
As others have written here before, users should be in control of their information. Thats at the core of privacy. Privacy has two aspects: disclosure
and choice. Disclosure means informing users in plain language about the data collected about them and how its used. Choice means putting users in
control of their data and giving them tools to protect it.
Have you ever wanted to take your web browsing off the record?

12.06.2007Vista SP1 benefit will be stability and reliability, not performance
The problem is one of the major issues with Vista is performance...
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Will Vista SP1 and how this
wont bring any relief to those who find Vista a bit slow or sluggish? Not really, but then again service packs arent about performance increases;
theyre about reliability and stability.
Ive seen a lot of service packs in my time. Windows 95 and ME both got one service pack,
NT 4.0 saw six, Windows 2000 had four and XP has so far seen two. But what I dont remember regarding any of these service packs is installing it onto
a system and then seeing any significant boost in performance. Service packs dont really work that way. Sure, youll feel specific improvements as a
result of some of the tweaks and fixes contained in the service pack, and you might feel the benefit of having your operating system refreshed by
loading the service pack onto it, but a service pack should not be looked upon as a performance upgrade. If your system cant run an OS, what it needs
is upgrading or replacing, not the application of a service pack.

26.11.2007BioShock sequel coming, 1.5m copies shipped
During an analyst conference call last night, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick revealed that the publisher plans to turn BioShock into an ongoing
franchise.
When asked about how to avoid watering down a franchise with annual releases, Zelnick responded by saying: I would
say, probably, roughly an every-two-year schedule would be optimal. And if you look historically that has been largely the case with GTA, and Id
expect wed apply rougly the same strategy to BioShock because BioShock is shaping up to be a very important franchise.
I dont
want to say more than that about BioShock because I certainly dont want to jinx it, but I feel awfully good about where thats going.
During the call, Take-Two also said that 2K Boston/2K Australias popular underwater first person shooter has become the fastest demo to hit
one million downloads on the Xbox Live Marketplace. ..

Mary Jo Foley: Would some of the folks clamoring for Microsoft to release a completely Web-based version of its Office suite be just as happy if
Microsoft released a stripped-down Office that was really cheap, or maybe even free and advertising-supported?
I think they
would. I am an Office user. I dont have a need for a Web-based version of Office, as I only create, edit and manipulate my Office documents on my
laptop. I dont want or need to log into Office from some other computer somewhere else. I seldom need or want to collaborate with others on documents.

05.03.2008Price cuts don't get to heart of Vista's problems, says analyst
If Microsoft thought a lower price for Windows Vista was what the operating system needed to kickstart sales, it should have thought twice, an analyst
said early Friday.
"In some ways, it's an attempt to remove any barriers that may be dissuading people from buying Vista,"
said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland, Wash.-based research firm. "But the missing step here is simplifying what
people need to know to buy. People are so confused about the versions and what they need on hardware that they don't even get to the price."

29.02.2008So Much Data, and So Many Ways to Guard It
Protecting the electronic re- cords of your business has gotten easier and more affordable, thanks to services that can make backups of computer files
across the Internet.
These services are useful for three reasons. First, for a few hundred dollars a year, you can buy
inexpensive protection for disaster, fire or theft. Second, they can work automatically so you dont have to remember to make backups. Finally, once
they are set up they dont take a lot of skill to maintain.
The trick is figuring out which backup provider offers the right
combination of services, support and price for you and protects all the computers on your network.

20.02.2008AT&T Welcomes Programmers for All Phones Except the iPhone
Im still trying to understand why Apple would go to such extremes to keep people from writing programs that run on the iPhone. Ive been
writing about Apples software update that seems to have deliberately disabled
third-party applications that users have installed.
In particular, Apples explanations dont make sense to me. This is what Steve
Jobs, Apples chief executive, said to
Newsweek in
January:
You dont want your phone to be an open platform, meaning that anyone can write applications for it and potentially gum up the
providers network, says Jobs. You need it to work when you need it to work. Cingular doesnt want to see their West Coast network go down because some
application messed up.
That sounds reasonable until you realize that there are many millions of phones that run operating systems from Palm,
Microsoft and others for which third-party applications are created all the time, and networks dont seem to be crashing as a result.

02.10.2007Don't wait for Windows 7: realize the benefts of Vista now
Some customers are considering whether to deploy Windows Vista or whether to skip in anticipation of Windows 7.
The discussion is often phrased
as one of balancing costs and timing of releases. By not deploying Windows Vista, it means missing out on the proven benefts such as better security,
productivity, search, mobility, manageability, and infrastructure optimization. Windows Vista works with more applications and devices than ever
before and can be signifcantly less expensive to support than Windows XP SP3.
There is no need to wait for Windows 7. It is a goal of the
Windows 7 release to minimize application compatibility for customers who have deployed Windows Vista since there was considerable kernel and device
level innovation in Windows Vista. The Windows 7 release is expected to have only minor changes in these areas. Customers who are still using Windows
XP when Windows 7 releases will have a similar application compatibility experience moving to Windows 7 as exists moving to Windows Vista from Windows
XP.
Historically, mainstream deployment occurs not when Microsoft releases a product but 18 months later. While the mainstream deployment
cycle is beginning for Windows Vista now, it isn’t expected to begin for Windows 7 until at least mid-2011

Holy spoilers, Batman! A week before the official release of Microsofts biggest gaming software release to date, and someone is already posting the
ending of Halo 3 before people have had a chance to buy the game.
Kotaku is advising that the ending to the third chapter of the
Halo series has indeed been posted to the Internet. If you are wanting details on the Halo 3 spoiler, look elsewhere. If you want to know where to
find it, consult your favorite search engine. As a service to you avid Halo fans, Im not going to share any further details on it other than to warn
you that it is out there. I would suggest going with a similar procedure as when the seventh Harry Potter book ending was leaked. Board up your
doors and windows, dont watch TV or listen to the radio, and stay away from the Internet. That is, until youve played the Halo 3 single player mode
all the way through. Dont say I didnt warn you!
Of course, if you really twisted my arm I could be a complete jerk and spoil the
ending for you. So OK, here goes
The large ape falls off the Empire State Building, they all did it, and Rosebud was a sled.
There - happy now?

19.09.2007Organizing the Windows 7 Project
Jon DeVaan: Steven wrote about how we organize the engineering team on Windows which is a very important element of how work is done. Another
important part is how we organize the engineering project itself.
Id like to start with a couple of quick notes. First is that
Steven reads and writes about ten times faster than I do, so dont be too surprised if you see about that distribution of words between the two of us
here. (Be assured that between us I am the deep thinker :-). Or maybe I am just jealous.) Second is that we want do want to keep sharing the how we
build Windows 7 topics since that gives us a shared context for when we dive into feature discussion as we get closer to the PDC and WinHEC. We want
to discuss how we are engineering Windows 7 including the lessons learned from Longhorn/Vista. All of these realities go into our decision making on
Windows 7.
OK, on to the tawdry bits.

07.09.2008Reality check: what we know (and don't) about Windows 7
Excited and whimsical speculation about future versions of Windows is a popular pastime, almost as much as complaining that newly-released versions
are too different from the "old reliable" releases that everybody knows and (sometimes) loves. With Windows Vista recently celebrating its first
birthday and preparing for the release of Service Pack 1, a team of developers at Microsoft is already busy working on its successor. While Microsoft
has been pretty good about keeping the details of "Windows 7" under wraps, a few enthusiastic employees have leaked out a few details. As is usually
the case in these situations, people have taken these tiny tidbits and added their ownoften highly improbablespeculation. In this brief report, we'll
review what we know, what we expect, and what we're calling bunk on, all based on our knowledge of Windows 7 from inside sources at Microsoft.

Since Windows Live got updated to Wave 3, we saw Microsoft expanding into the field of Social Networking. It introduced the concept of Profiles,
where you are able to show off what you want to show to others, and also the Whats New feed which shows you what others want to show you. Every user
using Windows Live, including all Hotmail and Messenger users (who may or may not be aware of the new social networking side of Windows Live Wave 3),
