It's Time to Face the Ugly Truth, SP3 or No SP3, the Clock Is Ticking for Windows XP

As 2008 has kicked in, it's now time to face the ugly truth. The clock is ticking for Windows XP. And while Microsoft may view this as a natural stage in the evolution of a product introduced all the way in 2001, a healthy proportion of end-users and businesses will fail to see eye to eye with the company on this one.

Wanted: New information on XP SP3

If Microsoft officials don't want you to know about Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, you can be darn well sure they really don't want to talk about Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3. But customers definitely want to discuss it.

XP users who still aren’t crazy about the idea of moving to Vista are quite interested in the status of the long-promised update to Windows XP. (Microsoft released the most recent XP update, XP SP2, way back in the summer of 2004.) I get queries from readers weekly about when XP SP3 will hit and what it will likely include.

There was a flap earlier this year regarding Microsoft possibly changing the due date for XP SP3. Microsoft officials have been saying for the past few months that the company would not provide the final XP SP3 until some time in the first half of 2008. In late May, however, there was a mention in a Microsoft press release that XP SP3 would ship "some time later this year." Microsoft's official response was that the 2007 date was a typo. (Yeah, tha t "typo" defense again.)

Firms need to plan for XP Service Pack 3

Organisations that expect to be running Windows XP in mid-2010 should plan to test and deploy XP SP3, Gartner has advised.

Microsoft is planning to release Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) and Windows XP SP3 will be available in the first half of 2008.

According to Gartner, deploying Windows XP SP3 should be significantly easier than testing and deploying SP2, which many users considered a major change of the operating system.

Annette Jump, a research director at Gartner, said, "We will probably see a mixture of Vista and XP SP3 deployments in 2008. Jump believed some businesses would deploy Vista and some could stick with XP, in which case, they would be looking at installing the SP3 service pack.

Windows XP SP 3 Release to Web Delayed

Windows XP SP3 release to web date has been delayed thanks to a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System. Surely this won’t have an impact on most of you but it is something you should all be aware since SP3 is no in the wild.

In the last few days, we have uncovered a compatibility issue between Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System (RMS) and both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). In order to make sure customers have the best possible experience, we have decided to delay releasing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to the web. To help protect customers, we plan to put filtering in place shortly to prevent Windows Update from offering both service packs to systems running Microsoft Dynamics RMS. Once filtering is in place, we expect to release Windows XP SP3 to the web.

Might XP SP3 ship in 2007, after all?

Microsoft’s party line for the past few months has been that it wasn’t going to get Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 out the door until some time in the first half of 2008.

But this week, Microsoft hinted that XP SP3 might actually ship this year.

It could be a simple typo in a press release. But then, again, maybe it’s not and it’s part of the Windows client team’s mission to under-promise and over-deliver. While the element of surprise is nice, corporate customers tell me having a real timetable for planning purposes would be much nicer...

Don't slipstream XP SP3 on Windows Vista!

This just in from Bink, seems he had a pretty interesting weekend attempting to Slipstream XP SP3.

"So I build a new Windows XP ISO with SP3 integrated, this is a Volume License editions (VOL) which only accepts Volume License Keys (VLK). When I want to install it on a clean machine, I noticed that setup prompts for a product key and it does not allow me to continue, which should be a new feature in XP sp3. OK so I fill in the VLK but it does not accept it, I try another one from a customer of mine, does not work either. Angry

I found out that the problem is when you do the XP Sp3 slipstream process on a WIndows Vista machine, the API gives a different response and screws up the PID process. This is a bug and Microsoft knew about this in December, still the bug remained and made it all the way to RTM, nice work Microsoft.

So XP SP slipstream only on XP or 2003 machines!!!"

XP SP3: TechNet and MSDN subscribers to get beta in two weeks

Microsoft provided an update on the timing for Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 on August 29.

Company officials said on Wednesday that the Windows team plans to deliver a near-public beta of XP SP3 (its going to all TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network subscribers) by mid-September.

The final version of XP SP3 is slated to hit some time in the first half of calendar 2008, officials said. (Thats the same date the Softies have been promising officially for a while now. Microsoft wont be any more specific on XP SP3 timing.)

Company officials did not release a feature set for XP SP3 on August 29. The only new piece of information available was the public-beta due date.

Microsoft made available to a set of private testers a preview of XP SP3 earlier in August. I saw an alleged fix list at that time: It consisted of nearly 1,000 items.

The last time Microsoft provided a cumulative update to Windows XP was in 2004, when it released XP SP2.

Microsoft to push XP SP3 via AutoUpdate July 10

Microsoft is going to release Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 via its Automatic Update (AU) service on Thursday July 10, company officials confirmed this week.

The client team has been vague about when it planned to push the latest version of XP to users. "Early summer" and "sometime soon"were favorite comebacks when officials were asked for an AU timeframe for SP3.

Customers who have automatic updates turned on but who don’t want XP SP3 to be downloaded to user desktops this week — for whatever reasons — need to deploy the Microsoft Service Pack blocker toolkit to delay pushed-delivery of SP3.

While Microsoft will begin pushing SP3 tomorrow, not all users will receive it immediatly, as the company will be staggering the rollout.

Microsoft has postponed and temporarily halted the distribution of SP3 a couple of times this year because of compatibility and performance problems.

XP SP3 Still on Schedule for First Half 2008

I've got to admit that I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft table Service Pack (SP) 3 for Windows XP, as Windows expert Paul Thurrott claims the Redmondians have done.

"The company has completely abandoned Windows XP, and it has absolutely no plans to ever ship an XP SP3," Thurrott posted to his Web site on April 6. "My guess is that Microsoft will do what it did with the final Windows 2000 Service Pack: Claim years later that it's no longer needed and just ship a final security patch roll-up. This is the worst kiss-off to any Microsoft product I've ever seen, and you'd think the company would show a little more respect to its best-selling OS of all time."

Last fall, Microsoft admitted that XP SP3 had slipped and was now a 2008 deliverable. If Microsoft were to go a step further and dump XP SP3, such a move wouldn't be too shocking, especially given Redmond's ongoing reticence to commit to Vista SP1 because service packs are passe.

Microsoft says false alarm: No XP SP3 this year

Sorry, Windows XP fans. It looks like the http://winbeta.org/comments.ph p?id=7447&catid=1>"end of 2007" date for XP Service Pack (SP) 3 that was in a Microsoft press release issued this week was a mistake.

At the end of the (east coast) day on May 23, a Microsoft spokeswoman provided the following update:

“I just received additional information from the product manager responsible for SP3. While we’re still not talking specifics, he did point to the following link as an accurate timeline for our preliminary plans for SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/ windows/lifecycle/servicepacks .mspx. Again, these are just preliminary and we will share more at a later date. Please do reference this link for current timing and disregard the release from InterOp, which is inaccurate.”

So it looks like XP SP3 is still — as of today — a “first half of 2008″ deliverable.

Windows XP SP3 Release Candidate Goes To MSDN

Microsoft made available on December 3 for download the near-final Release Candidate (RC) of Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3.

The RC is available to all Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers. This isn't yet a generally available, "public" RC of XP SP3; that is still coming at some future date that Microsoft hasn't disclosed.

Microsoft provided an RC "preview" of XP SP3 to 15,000 testers in mid-November.

Microsoft is still on track to ship the final XP SP3 in the first half of calendar 2008. XP SP3 is a rollup of all previously released XP updates, according to Microsoft, "including security updates, out-of-band releases, and hotfixes."

Lately, Microsoft has been releasing XP SP3 and Vista SP1 builds in lockstep. (The same 15,000 testers that got XP SP3 RC preview also got the Vista SP1 RC preview.) Given that Microsoft told its own employees to expect the company to make the RC of Vista SP1 more broadly available some time this week, it seems logical that the Vista SP1 RC is right around the corner, too.

Microsoft: XP SP3 RTM date a typo

WB: One more small note: the XP SP3 Overview that Microsoft posted yesterday is also not for the final version as can be seen on the second page of the doc: "This is a preliminary document and may be changed substantially prior to final commercial release of the software described herein."

Select group of testers get new builds of XP SP3, Vista SP1

Microsoft released yet more test builds of both Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 and Windows Vista SP1 this week.

Microsoft made the newest test build of XP SP3, which it is calling XP SP3 Release Candidate (RC) Refresh 2, available to 15,000 testers on January 23, Microsoft officials said. It also released a new refresh of its Vista SP1 build, known as Vista SP1 RC Refresh 2, to the same 15,000 testers on January 24, execs said.

Microsoft: 5573 Does Not Imply a Specific XP SP3 Build

Marius Oiaga: Microsoft is not saying much at all about the third and final service pack for Windows XP, and whatever information does manage to get through the translucent filters implemented by Steven Sinofsky, Senior Vice President, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group,
presents little relevance. A recent reference related to XP SP3 is Build 5573 from KB951126. Judging by the fact that XP SP 3 Release Candidate 2 Refresh 2 was Build 5508, speculation began circulating of a new version number 5573, that could even be the RTM build for the service pack. I contacted Microsoft on the matter, and this is not the case.

"The reference comes from 'A multiprocessor computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP stops responding on a black screen after you resume the computer from hibernation' KB article 951126 available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951126/. The file versions discussed on the Microsoft Help and Support page, referring to a hotfix for Windows XP SP3, are accurate," a Microsoft spokesman revealed in an email to Softpedia.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing

As expected and reported by Neowin last week, Microsoft, via Chris Keroack the Windows XP SP3 Release Manager for the Windows Serviceability team, has announced the release of Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 to manufacturing.

Here’s the official word, via a post to the TechNet XP Forum, thanks to sgtLENIN for the heads up:

“Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.

We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.

Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas – you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn’t have done this without you.

We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.”
