Students and the browser war

Zack Whittaker: For the last decade or so, there has been an ongoing war between Netscape (now gone), Microsoft and Mozilla, over which browser is the best and who uses it. Microsoft brought out Internet Explorer which killed Netscape Navigator, which led Microsoft to be the world leader for web browsing even up until now. Mozilla came around a few years ago, moulded from the remnants of Netscape to create Firefox, what is widely regarded as the best web browser in the world by many. If that is indeed the case, why isnt it the most used web browser in the world?

Hypervisor battle glowing red hot

A rash of hypervisor virtualization announcements last week from Microsoft, Oracle and Sun signal the game is on to beat down leader VMware and jump in the corporate virtualization revolution.

Last weeks moves, observers say, expose a strategy against VMware to commoditize hypervisor technology and then win the hearts of corporate users by providing choices for management and other tools to administer what experts say is a coming explosion in virtualization on corporate networks.

VMware, which disputes any notion that hypervisor will become a commodity, has been the undisputed leader in virtualization since shipping its first product six years ago. No one is questioning the depth of its hypervisor, which eschews the stripped-down route and builds in proprietary management technology, nor are experts claiming VMwares dominance is in dispute in the near term.

MaGE Leader Sentenced to Prison

District Judge Frank D. Whitney has sentenced 27 year old Justin Paul Emch to prison on one felony count of conspiracy to infringe copyright while he was leader of the warez release group ‘MaGE’. On top of this he was also fined $5000 and ordered to serve 2 years on supervised release. Emch was indicted as part of Operation Fastlink - a huge undercover investigation carried out by the FBI, the US Department of Justice and Interpol. Emch reportedly worked to supply the group with software that other members of the group cracked and then passed back to Emch for testing. The group had a huge collection of copyright material to which Emch had full access. Another one bites the dust; ten more have surely already replaced him.

Intel V8 versus AMD 4X4 Platform

In the world of CPU processors, whose is the best is always in question as the balance has swung in both directions in this war of the silicon wafer. Intel has been the leader many times and on many levels and markets, and although Texas upstarts AMD have given them a fair share of competition, Intel seems to always come out on top.

AMD's FX series of CPUs propelled them into the limelight in the desktop environment, but their Opteron CPUs failed to make the impact AMD had hoped in the server domain as did the Turion CPUs in the mobile market. AMD makes a good product when they are at the top of their game, but Intel still maintains the overall leader position in all these platforms and that equates to better sales numbers. Only those gamers who just love AMD are really into the whole AM2 platform at the moment, and that is due to the mass popularity of Intel's Core 2 CPU line which is dominating the desktop environment.

The CPUs and systems in this round of competition were submitted to me as high-end, desktop systems/ workstation, but the truth is these systems cost so much that there is no way anyone but the rich could afford these systems as just their gaming machine.

China to lead world technology

China is on track to surpass all other nations in manufacturing technology, including current leader, the US, according to a US academic study. While China still lags behind more developed nations in several key areas, the writing is on the wall for the rest of the world, say the study's authors. “It’s like being 40 years old and playing basketball against a competitor who’s only 12 years old – but is already at your height,” said Nils Newman, a co-author of the US National Science Foundation-supported research.

“You are a little better right now and have more experience, but you’re not going to squeeze much more performance out. The future clearly doesn’t look good for the United States.” The research was conducted for the NSF by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The researchers tracked a number of key indicators in a broad range of fields including scientific and engineering training, research, and manufacturing.

Microsoft's CodePlex Foundation leader soaks in stinging critique

After a stinging critique from a noted expert in establishing consortia, the leader of Microsoft's new CodePlex Foundation says such frank evaluation
is welcome because the open source group's structure is a work in progress.

Sam Ramji, who is interim president of the CodePlex Foundation, was responding to last week's blog by Andy Updegrove, who said the group has a poorly crafted governance structure and looks like a sort of "alternative universe" of open source
development. The CodePlex Foundation's aim is to get open source and proprietary software companies working together.

Samsung Develops World's Fastest and Largest 2.5" MLC-based 256GB SSD

Samsung Electronics, the world leader in advanced memory technology, announced today that it has developed the worlds fastest, 2.5-inch, 256 Gigabyte (GB ) multi-level cell (MLC) based solid state drive (SSD) using a SATA II interface at the fifth annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum held at the Westin Taipei Hotel. Samsungs new 256GB SSD is also the thinnest drive with the largest capacity to be offered with a SATA II interface.

With a sequential read speed of 200 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential write speed of 160MB/s, Samsungs MLC-based 2.5-inch 256GB SSD is about 2.4 times faster than a typical HDD.

Furthermore, the new 256 GB SSD is only 9.5millimeters (mm) thick, and measures 100.3x69.85 mm.

Once introduced, the Samsungs 256GB SSD will mark the largest capacity SSD from the global market leader in SSD sales, effectively eliminating density as a barrier to SSD adoption in the consumer space.
