19.12.2008Microsoft confirms Hotmail POP3 access for US and Brazil
Earlier, you may remember Neowin reporting that the Windows Live team had added POP3 functionality to their Hotmail service. Unfortunately, it has
only available in select countries, but now they've expanded. A blog post from the Windows Live Hotmail team has confirmed that you can now get
POP3 Hotmail access in the United States, and Brazil. Microsoft has been adding more features to Hotmail over the last week and had promised POP3
access for the US and Brazil would be coming this week, and they have delivered. Previously, United States users of Hotmail had to change their
country to get access on mobile devices. Now it's natively supported, ready to go.

09.02.2007How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4
Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing
with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings
from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

08.03.2009Microsoft warns of latest Windows Live Hotmail phishing scam
Microsoft is warning Windows Live Hotmail users of a recent phishing scam that asks for the person's username, password, date of birth, and country
or territory. It's not clear why the software giant has taken the time to warn users of this particular phishing scam, as this definitely isn't the
first Microsoft- or Hotmail-related one. Hopefully, it has nothing to do with its success rate, but it's likely due to the fact that the e-mail
claims it is from the Windows Live Hotmail team, both in the signature and at the start: "This Email is from Hotmail Customer Care and we are sending
it to every Hotmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety."

12.08.2008Free Windows Live Hotmail POP3 access has gone worldwide
About a month ago we reported that Microsoft was rolling out free POP3 access to Windows Live Hotmail customers in select markets. For the vast
majority, including myself, the updates had yet to hit their accounts. Well the wait is over, the Windows Live Hotmail team has officially announced
that POP3 access for all Windows Live Hotmail accounts has now rolled out to every customer. Here are the settings to access your e-mail messages via
POP3: POP server: pop3.live.com (Port 995) POP SSL required? Yes User name: Your Windows Live ID, for example yourname@hotmail.com Password: The
password you usually use to sign in to Hotmail or Windows Live SMTP server: smtp.live.com (Port 25 or 587) Authentication required?

So now that we've all recovered from the CES 2009, everyone is back to business including the folks up in Redmond, WA. It has been confirmed that
Microsoft has started rolling out another major update of Windows Live Hotmail, which includes POP access as discussed in my interview with Ryan Gavin
and Dharmesh Mehta. Last week we reported a rumour that Microsoft was about to offer POP3 access to Hotmail users at no extra charge. Microsoft has
confirmed the rumour via its Windows Live Wire blog today. POP3 access is now available to Hotmail users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,
France, Japan, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

15.01.2009Google patches Chrome browser to work with Hotmail
LiveSide: Weve been seeing lots of complaints on
Twitter and
elsewhere about Hotmail not working in
Googles new browser, Chrome. So today,
rather than waiting for Hotmail to address the problem, Google patched Chrome to work with Hotmail, by adding support for User Agent spoofing and
appearing to Hotmail as if it were a Safari browser instead. A quick check using the latest Chrome install seems to work fine with Hotmail
(truthfully been to busy playing with Windows 7 to spend much time with Chrome, but there have been lots of mentions of problems)...

29.01.2009Breaking: Thousands of Hotmail passwords leaked online
Neowin has received information regarding a possible Windows Live Hotmail "hack" or phishing scheme where password details of thousands of Hotmail
accounts have been posted online. An anonymous user posted details of the accounts on October 1 at pastebin.com, a site commonly used by developers
to share code snippets. The details have since been removed but Neowin has seen part of the list posted and can confirm the accounts are genuine and
most appear to be based in Europe. The list details over 10,000 accounts starting from A through to B, suggesting there could be additional lists.
Currently it appears only accounts used to access Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail have been posted, this includes @hotmail.com, @msn.com and
@live.com accounts.

07.05.2007Microsoft Updates Hotmail: Faster Interface and More Storage
Microsoft is slowly releasing a new version
Windows Live Hotmail this week, though, as LiveSide.net
reports, many users are having problems with the new design
and want Microsoft to revert back to the old layout. We have been looking at the new version of Hotmail for most of the morning and have not seen any
problems with it so far. The new layout will take some getting used to, but overall, it is simpler and faster than the old Hotmail and Microsoft has
significantly increased the storage limit.

30.09.2008Hotmail users get a storage bump
"Today, these new features
will begin to roll our
gradually to all our customers
over the next few weeks, so if
you dont immediately see them,
be patient, theyre
coming!"
Microsoft on Monday made a
series of updates to its
Windows Live Hotmail service,
chief among those being an
increase in the size of its
inboxes. Standard users now
get 5GB of storage, while paid
MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus
accounts now get 10GB of
storage.
The move follows Yahoo's
decision to offer its mail
customers unlimited storage.
Google's Gmail currently
touts 2.89GB worth of free
storage for its accounts.
Apple also recently upped its
.Mac storage limit to 10GB,
split between mail and file
storage.
In addition, Microsoft
said that Windows Live Hotmail
is also adding the ability to
accept and decline meeting
requests from Outlook accounts
as well as a tool for
eliminating duplicate contacts
and an easier way to switch to
Hotmail from another mail
service. ..

Microsoft currently offers POP3 access for $19.95 per year as part of its Hotmail Plus service. Rumours posted on several Windows Live forums this
week and Ars could indicate that POP3 access is about to drop for all hotmail users at no additional cost. Microsoft is expected to make some Windows
Live announcements at CES. There are rumours of the final versions of the Windows Live Client wave 3 applications being released and it's possible
that free POP3 access is one of the announcements.

27.08.2008The anatomy of a Hotmail phishing attack
Phishing schemes have become increasingly more common these days and, as we have seen over the past couple of days, can come as a big shock to the
general public who are not aware of the concept of these scams and therefore not aware when they are falling for one. As has been confirmed today,
phishing attacks are wide-spread across many different webmail services - such as Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo! Mail - but they can also be designed to
fool users of social networking websites and even trick people into handing their bank details over to complete strangers.
