9.8.2008T-Mobile calls it a day for WAP
UK operator T-Mobile is disconnecting its CSD-WAP subscribers from July 9th, suggesting customers might like to switch to GPRS or something a little
more 21st century, and disposing of pay-per-minute internet access. Circuit Switched Data (CSD) was how mobile phones accessed data services in the
early days, or at least the technology that allowed them to try. Technically equivalent to a dial-up modem, it allows speeds of up to 9.6Kb/s, ideal
for downloading the latest news and reviews from the Mobile Internet.
The first WAP phones only had CSD, and it was the 9.6Kb/sec speed
that drove the creation of WAP itself: a desperate attempt to create a usable experience over such slow connections. But even the mono graphics and
text-menu content was painfully slow to use, and starkly contrasted with TV advertising in the UK, from Genie Internet, promoting the Mobile
Internet.

27.05.2009How Facebook could kill Twitter, and why it won't
Before I start rambling, I'd like to start off by saying that I never really got into the whole microblogging scene. I tried, time and time again,
but it just never kept me interested for very long. Maybe that's why one day I went as far as getting down on my knees and begged God for
microblogging to go away so that I wouldn't have to keep hearing about the latest Twitter outage from all my favourite news sites. As time went by
though, I quickly realized that Twitter, and microblogging in general, was here to stay. That's why today you're seeing me post my first ever
microblogging-related story, and as much as I find the whole ongoing development very interesting, it will probably be my last.
So why do I
say that Facebook could kill off Twitter? Well, because it had microblogging before Twitter was a baby (yeah, I know, Twitter still is a damn baby).
You can argue day and night that wall-to-wall posts aren't mini blog posts, but you can't deny that Status Updates are exactly what Twitter
has been doing from the very start. Think about it. Status Updates = Tweets. Don't believe me? Well, there is one difference between the two, and
this is really the key to microblogging's success. On Twitter, you can follow anyone you would like, without their approval. Facebook just
won't let you do that.

03.04.2009HTML 5: Could it kill Flash, JavaFX and Silverlight?
While Adobe, Microsoft, and Sun duke it out with proprietary technologies for implementing multimedia on the Web, HTML 5 has the potential to "eat
these vendors' lunches," offering Web experiences based on an industry standard. In fact, one expressed goal of the new standard is to move the
Web away from proprietary technologies such as Flash, Silverlight, and JavaFX. "It would be a terrible step backward if humanity's major

was controlled by a single vendor the way that previous platforms such as Windows have been," says HTML 5 co-editor
Ian Hickson, a Google employee.

'Kill switch' dropped from Vista
Microsoft is to withdraw an anti-piracy tool from Windows Vista, which disables the operating system when invoked, following customer complaints. The
so-called "kill switch" is designed to prevent users with illegal copies of Vista from using certain features.
But the tool has
suffered from glitches since it was introduced with many Windows users claiming that legal copies of Vista had been disabled. Microsoft says its
efforts have seen a drop in piracy of its software. In a statement released by the company, Microsoft corporate vice president Mike Sievert, said:
"Users whose systems are identified as counterfeit will be presented with clear and recurring notices about the status of their system and how to
get genuine copies."

Microsoft's management agreed and gave users another year to make the migration.

Why Microsoft and Intel tried to kill the XO $100 laptop
At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2005, Nicholas Negroponte, supreme prophet of digital connectivity, revealed a strange tent-like
object. It was designed to change the world and to cost $100. It was a solar-powered laptop. Millions would be distributed to children in the
developing world, bringing them connection, education, enlightenment and freedom of information. The great, the good, the rich and the technocrats
nodded in solemn approval.
And then some of them tried to kill it.

DRM advocates getting nervous about consumer backlash
You all know the slogan: "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." At the Digital Rights Strategies conference in New York City, a similar message could be heard: "DRM doesn't anger consumers, content
owners abusing DRM anger consumers."
Few, of course, would argue that the mere existence of DRM is a bad thing. Locked away in a
vault somewhere or trapped in one of those nifty mirrors featured in Superman, DRM can do little harm. Such assertions are merely academic, of course.
Tools are designed to be used, and DRM is being used to do what it was designed to do: control how consumers interact with content.
But the growing backlash against DRM is causing dissension in the pro-DRM ranks. Paul Sweeting's excellent report on the DRS conference records the
frustrations of the DRM community at the tactics of the content industry. They apparently feel that an overzealous content industry is abusing DRM;
this is a bit like Smith & Wesson complaining that bullets can kill.
