Walmart to shut down DRM servers

Walmart is becoming the latest music vendor to shut down its legacy digital rights management (DRM) system, prompting warnings of potential for lost purchases. The company is advising users to back up any songs which are currently running with the company's DRM software. When the company shuts down in licensing servers on October 9th, users will be unable to verify new machines or transfer songs to other systems.

Walmart has been selling DRM-free files for more than a year through its online service. The new files are being distributed as clean MP3 files, whereas the DRM-equipped songs and videos were encoded in the WMA format. "DRM-protected music has been a sensitive issue and we recognize how confusing it can be to customers," lead music buyer Tom Welch said in a blog posting.

CircuitCity beats Walmart with 'sub'-$200 HD DVD player

Walmart may or may not be on the verge of offering a $198 Toshiba HD DVD player, but CircuitCity already is. That’s right, Toshibas HD-A2, which started out at $500 is now priced at $200 at CircuitCity, available via online purchase with free shipping or in-store pickup. Toshiba is pushing the price advantage viciously, but will it be enough? One can argue that whether or not Walmart offers the $200 price tag is much more important, seeing as it is the biggest retailer in the U.S. I personally believe that the rumours are true, and expect the Walmart offer to begin within a week. It will be very interesting to see how Sony will respond; there is still much time until the holidays. The HD war continues: to the consumers delight, prices are dropping, but to the consumers dismay, a winner has yet to emerge.

Walmart: $98.87 Toshiba HD DVD Player

Walmart has yet again proved that it can afford to make ludicrous price drops and leave the competition dazed. I was trying to figure out yesterday why there was no longer a mention of an HD DVD player over at Walmarts website. The answer came in the form of an excited post by one of our members on the forums. This Friday, dont be surprised to hear reports of a human stampede towards your local Walmart store.

The largest grocery retailer in the United States has done the unthinkable by pricing an HD DVD player, which not so long ago cost half a grand, within only 2 digits. That’s right, forget Toshiba’s sub-$200 HD-A2 and embrace the sub-$100 HD-A2. The device may be an outdated product, but it will definitely be sold out before the holidays. The fact that Toshiba (or Sony for that matter) has yet to start cutting prices in time for the shopping craze that is December is probably the most important piece of information here. The recent price cuts have been all done by retailers and they chose HD DVD.

Microsoft's major Xbox 360 announcement is... Pac-Man

Internet rumors suggested Microsoft was preparing a major announcement for this morning, and, in a historical sense, they have: Pac-Man creator Toru Iwatani has collaborated with Namco Bandai and Microsoft on Pac-Man Championship Edition for Xbox Live. What's so special? Iwatani's help designed new, dynamically changing maps for gamers -- the first in 26 years.

Pac-Man Championship Edition will be available tomorrow for 800 Microsoft Points ($10) and includes the classic Pac-Man already available as an XBL Arcade release, plus a slew of new timed modes:

- The Championship Mode designed by Namco Bandai and Iwatani specifically for the championship round of the Xbox 360 Pac-Man World Championship and features redesigned mazes with wide maze walls and a widescreen configuration to better enable high-speed game play. Timed limit of five minutes...

Man charged for attempting to hire a hit man online

The month of love does not always end happily for everybody. One such case of an unhappy ending is that of Karim Emara. Reports have surfaced which state that Emara has been charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault after an online posting requesting a hitman to attack his ex-girlfriend was discovered by the NYPD. Emara posted online a request for a hit man to brutally assault his former lover. The request was quite specific as well, stating that whomever was to take the job would be expect to "hit the woman in the knee with a blunt object, preferably a baseball bat and permanently scar her face". The payment was to be for the sum of $5,000.

WalMart to sell $199 HD-DVD player in Q4 2007?

WalMart is known for being able to majorly cut its prices thanks to mass production for a wide range of products. Now that I think of it, my first DVD player was from WalMart, purchased at a mere $30 CAD.

And now, rumour has it that WalMart plans the same type of move with HD-DVD players. If the source and translation is correct, Taiwan based manufacturer Fuh Yuan and TDK have been contracted by the retail giant to produce the blue laser drives for 2-million HD-DVD players. Broadcom will reportedly supply the system-on-a-chip decoder and China's Great Wall Corporation will handle final assembly. The deal represents around USD $100 million and it is reported that a new manufacturing plant has already been opened to fulfill the order. Speculation suggests the players will arrive at retail in late 2007 and will be priced between $199-299 USD. Now, the end of the year is quite a ways away, so Blu-Ray has time to respond - either they'll have to match it or come very close. Isn't competition just lovely?

Walmart Offers $197.88 Venturer HD DVD Player

The cheap Venturer HD DVD rumours have finally turned to rock solid fact. It may not cost $98.87 but, on the other hand, it does not appear to be a limited time offer. The largest grocery retailer in the United States has yet again showed that it is more than happy to fuel the HD war by beating competitor's prices. It may not carry the Toshiba brand, but the $197.88 Venturer SHD7000 is in stock and ready to go. Many have emphasized that $200 is the magic number for the holidays. For Toshiba's sake, I hope that's true. These additional players may finally get those HD DVD movie sales numbers up. Then again, this is a US-only deal, and HD DVD really needs help in Japan and Europe. It will be quite interesting to see what Toshiba will offer those regions during these holidays and how Sony will respond.

Wal-Mart Zune Comes With Free Porn

It's not the first time, nor the last, that people will find porn on (supposedly) new or recycled consumer electronics. This time it happened to a family in Southside Chicago who purchased Microsoft's Zune from the local Walmart for their 12 year-old daughter.

The daughter, who says the box looked like it had been opened (the charger was missing) discovered that her player contained porn. When confronted, the Walmart store manager initially blamed Microsoft for the pre-load. Later, a Walmart spokesman said they would investigate the matter and provide the couple with a full refund plus a ษ gift card, presumably to pick up a copy of "My Two Daddies" to help the mother explain to her daughter why the "5 men were having sex with each other." Uh, "join the social" Microsoft?

Man pins child porn accusations on pet cat

Child porn is, understandably, a very serious offense; so much so that there's an entire TV show dedicated to catching those willing to have sex with a minor, thus potentially also guilty of the first crime. As you can expect, people will do near anything to escape charges, though sometimes they end up getting themselves into worse trouble than they initially were. One such example is a 48 year old man named Keith Griffin, as NBC Miami reports, who told police that his cat was the one behind the 1000+ child porn images on his computer.
