Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock . The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize .com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview Available

Stardock is pleased to announce that the DeskScapes 2.0 preview version is now available. DeskScapes allows users of Windows Vista to have animated wallpapers on their desktop. It runs the Stardock created .DREAM format which can contain videos as animated wallpapers or dynamically generated content.

What makes DeskScapes special is that animated wallpapers can be run that use hardly any system resources (obviously this will depend on what animated wallpaper is chosen). It integrates seamlessly with the Windows Vista desktop background dialog so picking animated wallpapers is much the same as picking any other desktop wallpaper.

New Windows Embedded build brings new theme

User called marxo found a new Windows XP MCE-like theme in the latest CTP of Windows Embedded:

This style can be found in the Windows Embedded Standard CTP Refresh. It's called "Embedded" and, along with the wallpaper, gets copied into the image if the Windows XP UI component is added. As it's digitally signed it works with any XP/Server 2003 install. The archive I uploaded below contains the Embedded folder and the Embedded.theme to be copied to %systemroot%resourcesthemes and the wallpaper in its original format and size.

Apple has come out swinging, or at least Brian Croll, Vice President of Apple's Mac OS X worldwide product marketing has when it comes to the new offerings from Microsoft. Croll states that "Windows users are really tired of all the headaches that they've been getting over the years, starting all the way back from Windows Me to NT to Vista and now Windows 7," he said. "As a result, I think people are looking for something different, and the Mac offers real ease of use, stability and security." In his defense, Apple did just release their quarterly earnings which do backup some of his statements.

New type of image spam hides in e-mail wallpaper

A new type of image spam found this week is able to bypass many filters by presenting a message as wallpaper within an e-mail, according to the vendor Secure Computing.

Image spam uses text embedded in an image to foil traditional spam filters that catch spam by scanning messages for key words and by using other text-based techniques. Normal image spam is delivered as an attachment or loaded into an e-mail via a url, says Paul Henry, vice president of strategic accounts for Secure Computing.

But a new type of image spam Secure Computing found this week takes advantage of e-mail stationery, which consists of an HTML template. When used legitimately, the template might contain a companys logo and the senders name and contact information, just like a piece of letterhead paper. ..

Animated wallpapers no longer just for the Vista elite

Animated wallpapers have been one of the “Extras” that Microsoft has touted as a selling point for customers of its priciest Windows Vista SKU. But now Stardock is bringing animated wallpapers to the Vista masses.

Stardock, a Gold Certified Microsoft partner, worked with Microsoft on DreamScene — a desktop-display feature that allows users to make looped, full-motion video their desktop wallpaper (as opposed to using static images only for background wallpaper). After a number of delays, Microsoft finally released DreamScene in September 2007.

Stardock helped to create much of the initial wallpaper content for DreamScene and then went on to release DeskScapes 1.0 for Vista Ultimate users interested in enhancing DreamScene. With DeskScapes 2.0, Stardock has decided to make animated wallpapers avaialble to users of Vista Business, Home Premium and Ultimate users. The Standard edition of the product will be available as a free download; an enhanced version with additional features and “premium” content also will be availbale for $19.95.

Apple bashes Windows 7 at WWDC

Apple is announcing new MacBooks, new iPhones and its next generation OS, Snow Leopard today but during its Keynote at WWDC they dug hard at Microsoft. Bertrand Serlet, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, took the stage and began digging at Vista saying "what a big hole Microsoft has dug," and adding that "they're trying to get out of it with Windows 7." He carried on following up with an attack of Windows 7 saying it has "even more complexity" than Vista because it's just based on the "same old tech as Vista." Apple is notorious for attacking Windows based PCs in its Get A Mac adverts. Thanks to Engadget for the following picture:
