Leopard looks like … Vista

What struck me at the June 11 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) event wasn’t the glitzy demos, the rockstar-like worship of Apple CEO Steve Jobs or the “I’m Steve Jobs” parody video by the “I’m a PC” guy.

Why Leopard Isn't Better than Vista

Apples newest operating system is at best an evolution from predecessor Tiger. Some of the criticisms leveled at Windows Vista apply to Leopard. Seriously.

I bought my copy of Leopard on Saturday from the local Apple Store. Granted, Ive only used the software for two days, but it has made a remarkably fast first impression. There is much to like about Leopard, but this cat scratches—oh, am I wounded. Whats bugging me about Leopard is what bugged me about Vista eight months ago...

Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Windows Vista Ultimate users began to receive the first set of "Ultimate Extras". But arguably the most anticipated Ultimate Extra was not there -- Windows DreamScene.

Windows client director, Jeff Putt has confirmed that this extra will not be available in its final form immediately after launch. However, a technology preview may be coming soon for Windows Vista Ultimate users who want to give it a try.

Windows DreamScene enables users to use looping high-definition video content (MPEG, WMV) as an animated wallpaper. Thanks to the new 3D accelerated desktop in Windows Vista, the animated wallpaper uses virtually no CPU (just a little for decoding the video).

Microsoft demonstrated Windows DreamScene yesterday at the launch event which showed Windows DreamScene using an animated wallpaper created by Stardock . The wallpaper they showed will be available exclusively at Neowin.net's partner site, WinCustomize .com, in February.

More information on public availability for Windows Vista Ultimate users is expected soon.

Apple reportedly to postpone Leopard to support Vista

Apple is expected to launch its next generation Leopard operating system in April. According to unnamed industry sources, however, the release of the new OS will be postponed to October in order for Apple to ensure that Macintosh PCs that run the software are also capable of running Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system. The sources pointed out that the launch delay has nothing to do with software design problems with Leopard. Leopard would support Windows Vista through an integrated version of its Boot Camp software. Boot Camp is an Apple software application that currently assists in the installation of Windows XP on computers using Apple's latest OS. According to the sources, the company hopes with support for Vista, Mac computers using the new OS can grab more market share compared to just supporting Windows XP.

I personally don't see Apple delaying Leopard for Vista. Maybe they'll offer a Boot Camp update later on, but I doubt they will delay the release by half a year. On the other hand, if it does happen, I will find it very hypocritical of Apple, considering their anti-Vista advertisements.

Snow Leopard Previewed and Pictured

TestMac.net has published a quick look at Mac OS X Snow Leopard. "The biggest changes are under the hood. Snow Leopard is fast. Very fast. Like, surprisingly fast. From boot times to general application usage, Snow Leopard was noticeably quicker then Leopard when using the same system. Apple and 3rd party applications alike, they all launched faster and performed smoother. I'm sure this can be attributed to the new 64-bit architecture, but its amazing how much of a difference it really is." Screenshots included.

Hacker: Snow Leopard less secure than Windows

As reported by Techworld, Snow Leopard, Apple's highly anticipated new operating system, lacks basic security features that are found in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 says Charlie Miller, a noted security researcher. Address Space Layout Randomization, commonly referred to as ASLR, randomly assigns data to the memory to make it more difficult for hackers to locate the of critical operating system functions. Charlie Miller of Baltimore-based Independent Security Evaluators who many people may remember from when he successfully hacked a fully patched Macbook in seconds, was disappointed upon hearing that Apple did little to improve ASLR from Leopard to Snow Leopard. "Apple didn't change anything.

Its payback time: If the Vista team could write ad copy ¦

Apple advocates are doing the unthinkable: Theyre complaining publicly about a new Apple product release.

Even typically staunch Mac backers are admitting that Apple’s new Leopard operating system is not perfect. It might even be as problem-prone (if not more so) as Windows Vista. Could Leopard go so far as to drive some switchers into Vista’s arms? Sounds crazy, but who knows…

If youre Microsoft especially a member of the Vista team theres no way you can help but gloat. Very few Softies or their loyal followers are gloating publicly. But theres no way they arent enjoying this turning of the tables.
