5.4.2009Dell not installing the latest Ubuntu on new netbooks
Dell's Mini 10v netbook that was launched last week has some nice new upgrades, including "wireless improvements" according to Betanews, but one
thing that users shouldn't expect is the latest version of Ubuntu, 9.04, or even version 8.10. The netbook is currently being sold running Ubuntu
8.04 standard, but in an email that Dell sent to Betanews, they believed that installing the newest version is not in the best interest of the
mainstream users. Dell has stated two main reasons for sticking with the older version. A Dell spokesperson said, "We are trying to stay on a
12-month cadence to keep costs down, and build a stable platform.

04.09.2008Dell to preload Ubuntu, industry sources say
Officially, Dell Inc. hasn't
said a word yet about which
Linux it will be preloading on
its desktops and laptops.
Several sources within Dell,
however, have told
DesktopLinux.com that Dell's
desktop Linux pick is going to
be Ubuntu.
While
unable to confirm this through
official Dell channels, the
site says they have heard the
same story now from several
internal Dell sources. They
write that the Austin, Texas,
computer giant will be
preinstalling the newly
released Ubuntu 7.04. These
systems will be released in
late May 2007. According to
sources, Ubuntu will be
released on a Dell e-series
"Essential" Dimension
desktop, an XPS desktop, and
an e-series Inspiron laptop.
That Dell chose
Ubuntu wasn't much of a
surprise, since Dell founder
and CEO Michael Dell had
already announced that he is
running that distribution on
his home laptop. Michael Dell
is currently using Ubuntu 7.04
on an extremely well-equipped
Dell Precision M90.
Sources also indicated that
Dell has decided to go with
Ubuntu because a large number
of people who answered its
Linux desktop survey indicated
that they wanted Ubuntu. While
Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of
Canonical, the company behind
Ubuntu, recently said he
can't comment on whether or
not his company has been
talking with Dell, sources
close to the company indicate
that Dell and Canonical have
been having talks for several
months now about Ubuntu
running on Dell's
computers.

01.05.2007Dell dumps Ubuntu
Dell appears to have dumped its flirtation with Ubuntu, in the UK at least.

here, Dell says the machine is unavailable. Another poster reckons the whole thing was a publicity stunt.
And if you visit the Dell UK site,

confirms Dell no longer supplies Ubuntu pre-installed. "It has been discontinued in the UK," a closed source said.

19.01.2009Dell to Ship Ubuntu 7.10 on Desktops and Laptops
The PC vendor will ship the new Ubuntu Linux desktop on its PCs later this year.
Ubuntu 7.10 arrives Oct. 18, and not long after
that Dell will start shipping that version of the Ubuntu Linux desktop on its laptops and desktops.
"We will offer Ubuntu 7.10
preinstalled on our systems soon," said Anne Camden of
Dell corporate communications, in
an e-mail interview. "For customers who are interested in updating their existing Ubuntu systems, we advise them to visit the
Ubuntu 7.10 page on our wiki, which will go live

Dell isn't ready yet to give a shipping date. "As with any OS release, Dell needs to take the time to

Ubuntu 7.10 on XPS M1330, Ubuntu on Dells comes to Spain
In response to feedback from Dell customers who want Linux on more hardware and in more countries, Dell has announced that starting today, customers
in Germany, United Kingdom, France and now Spain can purchase Ubuntu Linux 7.10 with built-in DVD playback on the XPS 1330n (in addition to the
previously-released Inspiron 530n desktop system). Surprisingly enough, this time it will be the U.S. customers who watch their European counterparts
receive an offering first and are forced to wait for availability in their country. Open source supporters everywhere are probably very satisfied with
Dell’s frequent decisions to give them what they want. I can’t stress how important I believe OEM support for Linux is.

Dell's Linux desktop line keeps expanding
When Dell first announced that
it would be releasing Ubuntu
Linux-powered consumer

has already expanded its
consumer Linux line, and now
it has announced that it will

"Wanted to be clear that Dell
does have plans to offer Linux

additional locations outside
the United States. More
details to come later this
summer. We will also offer
Ubuntu to small business
customers in the future. As
soon as we have more details

Dell to offer more Linux PCs, Ubuntu's creator says
Dell will soon offer more
personal computers that use
the Linux operating system as

said the founder of a company
that offers Linux support
services.

Shuttleworth, who created the
Ubuntu version of Linux and

There are, of course, many Linux distros based on Ubuntu out there (Shift Linux was, for a time, one of them). Among the religious derivatives, we

publicity nightmare for Canonical. Why?

Dell announces the models for Ubuntu?
LinuxQuestions.org founder
Jeremy Garcia has reportedly
received an e-mail from a Dell
employee that says the company
is planning to launch Ubuntu
" on the E520, 1505 and XPS
410 starting next Thursday,
5/24. We expect these systems
to be less than 1% of our OS
mix for the entire year which
is ~20,000 systems annually.
The goal of launching Linux is
to continue to give our
customers more choices to
customize their new
Dell ." Garcia also claims
the Dell representative noted
Dell will officially have
employees available for
" discussing the desktop
Linux situation with
customers ". On March 13,
an entry appeared on the
Direct2Dell blog about Dell
offering Linux and allowing
potential customers to do a
survey about what they are
interested in. If the above is
correct, Dell has acted very
rapidly in response to its
customer's requests, although
speculation about such a move
has been in the air since the
beginning of the year. This is
a huge step for Linux, will
other companies follow

Dell "Mini Inspiron" aims to take on EeePC
Gizmodo Bumped into Michael Dell at

It's a small form factor notebook, just like the Asus Eee and the HP 2133. Michael
Dell wouldn't tell Gizmodo what OS it's running, or the pricing, but that it's a low-cost notebook meant for developing countries. From

Ubuntu Studio 7.04 Released
Ubuntu Studio is a
multimedia editing/creation
flavour of Ubuntu. It’s
built for the GNU/Linux audio,
video, and graphic enthusiast
or professional.
The Ubuntu Studio team is
proud to announce its first
release: 7.04 for Intel
i386-compatible processors.
With this release, which you
can download for DVD in little
over 860 MiB, we offer a
feature that is somewhat
reminiscent of Ubuntu Server:
on installation, you can
choose between the Audio,
Graphics or Video tasks; and
choose also to install a
number of plugins, which for
this release is mainly aimed
at audio production.
We have endeavoured to
keep as many of our packages
in the standard Ubuntu
repositories as possible.
Certain packages, such as
wired and our art packages,
are kept in an external
repository and fully up to
Ubuntu packaging standards. Be
aware however, that this is
only a temporary solution and
we will be pushing all our
packages into Ubuntu for the
next release...

Wubi arrives: a look at Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 5
The Ubuntu development community has announced that
the fifth Ubuntu 8.04 prerelease is now available for testing. Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 5 adds additional polish and reliability as well as a few intriguing
new features. The official release of Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, is scheduled
for late April and feature freeze is already in effect.
<...> One of the most significant new features added in alpha 5 is
support for Wubi, a new installation mechanism that makes it easier for Ubuntu and Windows to coexist on the same computer. Wubi provides a complete
Ubuntu installer that can be run in Windows from the Ubuntu Live CD. It installs Ubuntu into a folder on the Windows file system and sets up a boot
menu so that users can choose between Windows and Ubuntu when the computer starts.
