Could a three-core CPU be coming your way?

Tom's Hardware Guide ran one of the most unusual benchmarks I've ever seen, having taken a dual-CPU system and put two different CPUs in it. Now, anyone who knows anything about dual-CPU systems knows this is a no-no. Most motherboard makers don't even recommend mismatching steppings, let alone anything else. And sure enough, Tom's Hardware Guide had its fair share of trouble getting the system to work in such an odd configuration, but it got the system to work.

Intel Adds "Yorkfield" Core 2 Extreme

Intels latest roadmap adds two more processors to the upcoming lineup. The roadmap reveals early plans for the Yorkfield-based Core 2 Extreme and another Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence processor. With Yorkfield, Intel differentiates the Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Duo models by the front-side bus speed.

Intel Core 2 Extreme Yorkfield processors will have a 1333 MHz front-side bus, continuing on where the Kentsfield Core 2 Extreme QX6850 leaves off. The quad-core processor supports Intel VT, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep and Intel 64 and Execute Disable Bit technologies. Intel leaves TXT technology out of the 45nm Core 2 Extreme however.

Intels Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence receives a speed bump in Q42007. The new Core 2 Duo E4600 clocks in at 2.4 GHz and remains on an 800 MHz front-side bus. Aside from the speed bump, the Core 2 Duo E4600 is no different from other Core 2 Duo E4000-sequence models. ..

Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 to debut 2 September

Intel will launch its fastest mainstream mobile microprocessor on 2 September and tweak the prices of some of its existing Core 2 Duo and line-up. The same day will see Celeron M prices cut too as the new 550 debuts.

Intel documents seen by Register Hardware show the T7800 will replace the current T7700 as the top-of-the-line laptop-friendly Core 2 Duo. The new chip will be clocked at 2.6GHz and operate over an 800MHz frontside bus. It has 4MB of L2 cache.

It will be accompanied by the 2GHz T7250. Intel already has a 2GHz Core 2 Duo, the T7200, but it runs on a 667MHz FSB - the T7250 bumps that clock frequency up to 800MHz. However, it has 2MB of cache to its predecessor's 4MB...

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200: The new budget king

The new Core 2 Duo E7200 is the first member of the “Wolfdale-3M” family. You may remember that not so long ago we looked at the new Wolfdale family of 45nm processors, which consists of the E8200, E8300, E8400 and E8500 processors. These still remain today as the fastest Core 2 Duo processors, offering superior performance and efficiency not to mention stellar overclocking abilities.

The Wolfdale-3M family is, as you may have guessed, a cut-down version, and as the name alludes to, these processors feature a smaller 3MB L2 cache and a 1066MHz FSB. With the Core 2 Duo E7200, Intel is offering a 45nm processor that is considerably more affordable than the cheapest Wolfdale ($180), and even undercuts other budget oriented models such as the E6550 that roughly costs $160, while the E4700 is also more expensive at around $140.

Intel's Next Desktop Launch Details Revealed

Roadmaps reveal the refreshed Conroe with a 1333 MHz front-side-bus arriving in Q3'07, around the same time of Intel's Q3'07 price cuts. The new Core 2 Duo E6x50-series pricing will undercut pricing of current Core 2 Duo E6x00-series processors. As usual, all pricing is in 1,000 unit quantities.

With the introduction of Core 2 Duo E6x50-series processors, the entire Intel Core 2 Duo desktop lineup will fall below the $300 price point. The top of the line Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 is priced at $266 per processor and is clocked at 3.0 GHz - higher than last year's flagship Core 2 Extreme X6800 at a fraction of the X6800's $999 launch price. Slotted below the Core 2 Duo E6850 is the 2.66 GHz E6750 at $183. At the bottom end of the Core 2 Duo E6x50 family are the E6550 and E6540 processors clocked at 2.33 GHz, which cost $163 per processor. Intel's Core 2 Duo E6540 differs from the rest of the 1333 MHz front-side bus Core 2 Duo lineup because it does not have support for Intel's Trusted Execution Technology, also known as TXT.

Intel will also launch two more Core 2 Duo E4000-series processors. The Core 2 Duo E4400 will arrive next month clocked at 2.0 GHz for $133 per processor. In Q3'07, the Core 2 Duo E4400 will drop down to $113 with the introduction of the E4500. The Core 2 Duo E4500 clocks in at 2.2 GHz and takes over the $133 per processor price point. Intel will slowly phase out the Core 2 Duo E4300 processor in Q3'07. Intel will introduce the first new Pentium desktop product since it switched over to the Core naming scheme in June. Two Pentium dual-core Conroe-based processors with 1MB of shared L2 cache models will launch, the 1.80 GHz E2160 ($84) and the 1.6 GHz E2140 ($74).

Multi-Core Confrontation: Core 2 Quad Q6600 vs. Core 2 Duo E6850

While AMD keeps postponing the launch of their quad-core processors to the end of this year “ beginning of next, Intel Company is offering very affordable quad-core CPUs from Core 2 Quad family. However, can Core 2 Quad processors be regarded as a worthy alternative to popular dual-core solutions?

The Intel processor price cut that occurred a month ago turned into an important milestone on the multi-core processors way to user computer systems. The price of quad-core processors has finally dropped down to the level of dual-core solutions. To be more exact, the youngest model in the official Core 2 Quad lineup is priced exactly the same as the top Core 2 Duo CPU. This price, by the way, is set at $266, which seems quite sufficient to make processors with four computational cores much more popular than they used to be before.

Intel Leaks 45nm Xeon Clock Frequencies

Hot on the heels of the second generation Intel Core 2 Duo launch, an internal memo began making the rounds with Intel's 45nm Xeon core frequencies.

These 45nm Xeons, based on the Penryn generation of processors, also feature the 1333 MHz front-side bus found on the new Core 2 Duo stepping. Each die features 6MB of L2 cache -- giving the two dice quad-core Harpertown Xeons a total of 12MB of L2 cache.

Unlike the desktop roadmap, dual-core Xeons take a more auxiliary role. Intel only laid out plans for three dual-core SKUs at launch; one of which is a low-power CPU. These dual-core 45nm processors, dubbed Wolfdale, will only consist of a small amount of shipped 45nm Xeon processors.

Intel sued for Core 2 Duo patent infringement by University

Although Intel's mighty proud of the Core 2 Duo, it looks like the chip wasn't all home-grown - a lawsuit filed today by the University of Wisconsin claims that the processor infringes on patented technology developed by one of its professors. Back in 1998, CS department chair Gurindar Sohi presented some of his developments relating to instruction level parallelism to Intel and offered to license them, but got nowhere - yet the same technology is in the Core 2 Duo, according to the lawsuit. For its part, Intel says it's been talking to the Badgers for over a year now, and that it hasn't evaluated the complaint - which it might want to do in short order, since the University is asking for the court to halt shipments of the Core 2 Duo in addition to monetary damages and legal fees.
