Top 10 Windows Freeware tools for 2005
As we head into 2005’s home stretch, I thought I’d do a round-up of my top 10 pieces of Windows Freeware for 2005. Some of these aren’t new, but certainly what I’d consider essential. Some on the other hand, are new. I’ve tried to avoid the instantly popular ones like Firefox and Opera, although I did give way to Winamp and Konfabulator in the end. But hey, it’s my top 10. If you don’t like it, post your own.

04.03.2008Zune: Follow the Leader
Joe Wilcox: Microsoft should make a New Years resolution to follow its marketing leaders. In the
last post, I explained
how the Macintosh Business Unit stood out with the Office 2008 launch. The Entertainment and Devices division also has something to teach with the
Zune v2 launch.
At a time when it seems like Windows Vista can do no right, Zune v2 does little wrong, with respect to marketing
and user interface design.
Apple's iPod is the indisputable portable music player king, making it easy to dismiss upstarts,
particularly Microsoft. Zune v1 didn't look like much of an iPod competitor, and even Zune v2 lags far behind. But whatever Zune's future as a
product may be, the design, marketing and software approaches are blueprints for other Microsoft groups to follow.

04.01.2008OCZ Announces Core Series V2 SSDs with 170MB/sec Reads, 98MB/sec Writes
Things are really moving quickly in the solid state disk (SSD) market. On July 1, OCZ shook the storage market with its new
OCZ Core Series SSDs which were priced at
$169, $259, and $479 respectively for 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models -- street prices were actually a bit lower after a mail-in rebate that OCZ offered
on the drives.
The other key selling point -- besides the price -- for the drives were their rather remarkable performance
ratings. The drives featured read speeds of 120 to 143 MB/sec and write speeds of 80 to 93 MB/sec.
OCZ is not resting on its
success with the OCZ Core Series and today announced its brand new
Core Series V2 SSDs. With the Core
Series V2 drives, OCZ not only ratcheted up the storage capacity, but also performance.

08.07.2008Mozilla collecting all web tools together in one directory
If you're a web developer, you'll hopefully be aware that there are many helpful (and free) tools designed to progress your quest for an epic
website; the only problem with this, though, is that you have to find them. There is currently no centralized directory for all such tools, but
Mozilla's fed up of this, and has set out to build one of their own, according to MoMB (via the folks at TechCrunch). Mozilla has posted an entry
on their official blog regarding the new site, with Ben Galbraith saying, "There are an immense number of tools that have been created to help web
developers. Unfortunately, you might never know this; there's no central index of these tools.

Services or S+S (if you have been abducted and just returned, hence not heard about S+S, I suppose you have bigger issues to deal with than knowing
what S+S is right now...). Anyway, for people not abducted by aliens and therefore looking for S+S guidance, I am pleased to announce LitwareHR v2.

22.11.2007Sun's JavaFX tools to interop with Adobe
Sun Microsystems is working on interoperability between design tools from Adobe Systems and its upcoming JavaFX tools for application developers

James Gosling, Sun vice president and fellow, told
Register Developer that Sun is working to ensure interoperability - rather than provide its own design tools.
"We are

Allan da Costa Pinto: Did you know we have time saving, ITPro tools for WCF? They ship via the Windows SDK or Visual Studio 2008. From what I hear,
these aren't your regular sample grade SDK utilities from Microsoft - they have full product level support from Microsoft. Currently, the only known
dependency is having .NET installed and the product team seems to smile when you install the tools via the SDK or VS on a dev machine and copy the
tools to other machines where they are needed. Nice!
