Mark Russinovich: On Working at MS, Server 2008 Kernel, MinWin vs ServerCore, HyperV and more

Charles Torre: I recently sat down with Technical Fellow Mark Russinovich to dig a bit into what's new in the Windows Server 2008 kernel. Of course, we talk about many things including HyperV, application virtualization, kernel architecture (not everybody defines an OS kernel in the same way - tune in to understand why this is the case. Mark has his own definition that may not be the same as yours....).

Recently, the MinWin project was in the press after a university video lecture by a Microsoft Windows architect was released on the net. Most people immediately confused MinWin with Windows Server 2008's ServerCore technology - the confusion stems from the incorrect assumption that ServerCore is a byproduct of the MinWin work. In fact, they are not at all related. Mark explains the differences and hopefully this will end the confusion...

Of course, Mark spends time on the whiteboard in this interview, drawing out the kernel architecture, explaining HyperV, touching on application virtualization (running client applications without having to install them locally - tune in to understand what I mean...).

Server Vendors To Embed New VMware On Servers

VMware this week is shrinking its flagship ESX Server virtualization software so it can be embedded in servers from vendors such as IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Dell.

VMware is unveiling the software, VMware ESX Server 3i, along with other enhancements to its product line, to its solution providers and an estimated group of 10,000 attendees of its VMworld conference, which starts Tuesday in San Francisco.

ESX 3i has all the functionality of ESX Server, but was shrunk to fit in 32 Mbytes of memory instead of the previous 2 Gbytes in order to let it be embedded on server motherboards, said Bogomil Balkansky, senior director of product marketing at VMware.

"That makes it only 1 percent or 2 percent the size of a general purpose operating system," Balkansky said. "This has implications for reliability and security. A smaller code base is more reliable. And it leaves less surface area for attacks."

VMware benchmark tool raises fairness questions

VMware is making a free benchmarking tool available to IT professionals today to evaluate the performance of virtualisation technology in their datacentres. Meanwhile, it seeks to assure competitors that the benchmarking standards will be fair to all of them.

VMmark is available for a free download and can be used to determine how well virtualisation software works with any of six typical datacentre workloads: file server, e-mail server, web server, a stand-by server, an online transaction processing (OLTP) database and a Java order entry system. VMmark runs on either Linux or Windows.

VMware shared a prototype of VMmark in October 2006 with members of the Standard Performance Evaluation (SPEC), an industry group that establishes performance benchmarks so customers can evaluate products. At that time, SPEC had just formed a working group to develop benchmarks for virtualisation software. It is still working on those benchmarks...

This means that VMware will try to get its hypervisor certified by Microsoft, and once that happens Microsoft will offer technical support for Microsoft applications running on VMware servers. Its not clear when those support plans would become available.
