VMware Releases Fusion

VMware has announced the general availability of VMware Fusion, which allows Mac users to simultaneously run Mac OS X, Windows and other PC-based applications on Intel-based Macs. The alternative is restarting to run Windows and Windows applications, as Apple's Boot Camp software mandates.

The software allows Mac users to run both 32- and 64-bit operating systems, using two processor cores at the same time, and a variety of USB 2.0 devices, according to the company. VMware also claimed that Fusion is also the only Mac virtualization software available today to provide support for over 60 operating systems and power management capabilities to safeguard virtual machines when laptops are running out of battery.

VMware claimed over 250,000 downloads of VMware Fusion since its beta became available in December 2006...

VMWare Fusion: Unity

Parallels' killer feature is Coherence, a display mode that lets Windows apps and Mac apps seem to co-mingle with one another. VMWare, the market leader in virtualization, had a solid Mac offer (in beta) called Fusion but it lacked a similar feature. It looks like VMWare has figured out that people are crazy about Coherence, and so Unity is coming to a Fusion install near you.

As you can see in this video, Unity is pretty cool. It seems to have a little more polish than Parallels' implementation (the drop shadows are a nice touch) but I'll reserve judgement until I can use it myself.

VMware Launches Second 'Fusion' Beta for Macs

The Palo Alto, California-based VMware has announced that Beta 2 of its free "Fusion" virtualization software for Macintosh desktops and laptops can now be downloaded from its Web site. VMware launched the original beta on December 21. In the latest beta version of Fusion, VMware has included experimental three-dimensional graphics that will allow users to play some DirectX 8.1 games on a virtual Windows XP machine. Beta 2 also supports Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system and offers "experimental" support for Apple's new operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), which will be released later in 2007.

Fusion also comes with a new feature called "Rollback," which allows users to take a snapshot of their virtual machine configuration and then allows them to return to that configuration at any time. In addition, VMware is also offering support for Apple's AirPort wireless network. The software will also support up to 10 virtual network interfaces. The full public version of Fusion should be released later in 2007, the company said in a statement.

VMWare Releases Fusion for Mac

As first noted last week, VMWare has released Fusion, its virtualization software for the Macintosh. The software costs $79.99, and is available for online purchase and download. You can download a 30-day evaluation license from VMWare's Web site. Fusion is VMWare's first virtualization software for the Macintosh, and it enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows and other x86-based operating systems without having to be rebooted first.

Fusion is not the first virtualization software to come to the Macintosh, however: Parallels has already carved out the niche for virtualization on the Mac with its Parallels Desktop for Mac software, and Codeweavers' CrossOver software enables some Windows applications to run without having Windows installed at all. VMWare senior product manager for Mac products Pat Lee believes that VMWare will be able to capitalize on strengths in Fusion not offered by Parallels Desktop.

VMware Windows-on-a-Mac product close to launch

VMware Inc. is pricing its upcoming new software to run Windows on a Mac similar to rival Parallels Inc.'s software announced last week. VMware said that its Fusion software for Macintosh computers can be pre-ordered beginning Tuesday for US$39.99, and $79.99 when it becomes generally available near the end of August. Parallels Inc. priced its Parallels Desktop version 3.0 at $79.99 when it became generally available Thursday, and $39.99 for users upgrading from a previous version of Parallels.

Both make it possible for Mac users to run the Windows OS from Microsoft Corp. alongside the Apple Inc. Mac OS X operating system. It is for people who use a Mac but also want to use software applications written only for Windows. VMware released Fusion Beta 4 for Macs on Thursday. Besides running Windows OSes, Fusion also runs Linux and Solaris-based applications without having to reboot the computer to switch from the Mac OS to another OS. VMware says one key feature of Fusion, called Unity, allows for seamless transition from Mac to Windows applications. Icons for Windows applications will be displayed along with those of Mac applications in the dock at the bottom of the computer screen.

How To: Get Windows 7 Aero in a Virtual Machine

This week, Microsoft made the XP Mode RC available to Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate users. Most Virtual Machine emulating software has not offered support for Aero previously, including Microsoft's own Virtual PC 2007. Now, thanks to the powerful set of "Integration Components" in Windows 7 Virtual PC and the enhanced, updated version of Remote Desktop in 7, we can now have the full Aero Glass experience in Windows 7 Virtual Machines, provided the host can handle Aero, and has it enabled. Here's how to get it: This assumes you already have Windows 7 installed on your PC in Virtual PC. Step 1: Enable Aero on your host machine.

AMD Talks GPGPU and "Fusion"

In an interview with Italian media, AMD Executive Giuseppe Amato, Technical Director of Sales & Marketing EMEA, discussed AMD's current market position and future products.

In the interview, Amato sheds some more light on the structure of AMD's upcoming Fusion processors. A misconception that Amato notes is that Fusion processors will not only be available in single-chip flavors, but also mutli-chip formats. Two Fusion processors linked together would allow for parallel GPUs. He says that AMD has still not solidified the future plans of Fusion yet, but indicates it would be very likely to see a Fusion processor with a GPU and CPU connected through a CrossFire-like interface -- and have a total TDP of less than 120 Watts.

Amato also praises the flexibility of the Fusion processor in the interview and tells Hardware Upgrade that it will allow AMD to "integrate a specific number of GPU and CPU cores depending on the customer and the uses for which they will use the chip. ..
