22.12.2005VMware's Rosenblum: We'll Be Technically Better Than Microsoft
Mendel Rosenblum is a co-founder of VMware, a Stanford University professor of computer science, and chief science officer for the market leader in
virtualization. At VMworld, the annual VMware user group meeting this week in San Francisco, Rosenblum talked with InformationWeek Editor at Large
Charles Babcock about the latest version of the ESX Server hypervisor and how VMware plans to cope with Microsoft(MSFT)'s entry with Viridian into
the market next year.
InformationWeek: VMware put ESX Server on a weight loss plan to get it down from two gigabytes to 32
megabytes in the just announced, embeddable, 3i version. How did you do that?
Rosenblum: We've typically included a version of
Red Hat Linux in ESX Server. That's because the hardware manufacturers put little embedded processors to control the fans and other elements of their
servers. They have agents reporting on their operation. They wouldn't write software that would allow those processors to interface to ESX Server,
but they had to do it for Linux. So we shipped a full Red Hat operating system as our management console.

02.08.2007Microsoft blogger compares VMWare ESX Server 3i to Windows Server Virtualisation
Dave Northey: I was reading
this article about the
up-and-coming ESX Server 3i from VMware.
It calls out a bunch on "new features" that we have either been doing for ages, or
have announced that we will have in Windows Server Virtualisation (WSV), when we ship Windows Server 2008 - I'm confused (seems like someone is
trying to introduce a load of FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt).
They call out 64GB virtual machines and 128GB physical
machines. We'll do 64GB virtual machines with WSV and 64-bit Windows will work with systems with up to 1 Terabyte of physical memory. The reason
for this, if you're interested is that our hypervisor is 64-bit and ESX is still 32-bit.
They call out support for
virtualisation-aware (para-virtualised) Linux operating systems. We are working with both Novell and XenSource, so we'll do that too (we already
support both RedHat and SUSE Linux on Virtual Server).
There's more, but the 'funniest' is the reference to expanded hardware
support (storage and networking). Both Virtual Server and WSV use native Windows device drivers - have a look at
http://www.windowsservercatalog.com, you'll see that we already support over 6,500
storage items. Both our server virtualisation offerings (Virtual Server and WSV) are completely hardware independent - as long as there is a Windows
device driver, you're OK. VMware has a very small, limited sub-set of hardware that they can run on.
Just thought I'd call it
out - there's a lot of FUD out there - don't believe any of it.
Dave.

12.10.2007VMware puts a virtual machine in your pocket
VMware has introduced a public
beta test of ACE 2 Enterprise
Edition, adding on many new
features (including the
ability to distribute virtual
machines on any portable USB
drive) over the previous
release which allowed users to
construct specific virtual
machines and then distribute
them. VMware Pocket ACE allows
users to store any number of
virtual machine images on USB
drives, as long as the user
includes the necessary free
version of VMware Workstation
6.0, which is automatically
installed and started when the
machine image is run.
The Windows version is
available as a hefty 273MB
download. Preconfigured VMware
ACE appliances for Windows
2003, Red Hat Linux, and SUSE
Linux are also available to
download, the latter two in
.rpm binary formats. Also
available is a 39MB download
for the VMware ACE Management
Server application, which
administrators can use to
tightly control how the ACE
virtual machine images are
used. Images can be managed
from central server, and
configured to be available
only to certain users, limit
the use of virtual ports and
devices, encrypt the entire
image for security and even
specify expiry dates for the
images.

21.04.2009Server Vendors To Embed New VMware On Servers
VMware this week is shrinking its flagship ESX Server virtualization software so it can be embedded in servers from vendors such as IBM,
Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
VMware is unveiling the software, VMware ESX Server 3i, along with other enhancements to its product
line, to its solution providers and an estimated group of 10,000 attendees of its VMworld conference, which starts Tuesday in San Francisco.
ESX 3i has all the functionality of ESX Server, but was shrunk to fit in 32 Mbytes of memory instead of the previous 2 Gbytes in order to
let it be embedded on server motherboards, said Bogomil Balkansky, senior director of product marketing at VMware.
"That makes
it only 1 percent or 2 percent the size of a general purpose operating system," Balkansky said. "This has implications for reliability and security.
A smaller code base is more reliable. And it leaves less surface area for attacks."
