Can Vista SP1 help polish Vistas tarnished image?
Call it complaining. Call it whining. The end result is the same: Windows Vistas image is tarnished. And its corroding more and more rapidly as the weeks are going on. Thanks to pacpis for this news.

21.02.2008Releasing Windows Vista SP1 for more languages
Chris Flores: It has been almost a month since we released Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update in 5 languages. To date: millions of people have
successfully installed Windows Vista SP1 on their PCs. So we're happy to announce the next step for Windows Vista SP1 availability.
We are excited to report that today we are making Windows Vista SP1 available to folks running Windows Vista in any of the supported languages.
Starting today, users will be able to choose to manually install Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update or download the standalone installer from the
Microsoft Download Center (
x86 and
x64) for any of the 36 supported languages, not just English, Spanish, German, French, and Japanese. For now, it is available
for users who visit Windows Update or the Microsoft Download Center. We encourage most users to get Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update-which will
provide the best update experience.

16.04.2008Early Vista SP1 64-bit installs causing new problems?
An iTWire journo by the name of Alex
has found yet another Vista
SP1 issue to bitch about, this time it's the x64 version and early reports are pointing to several problems. Anything from the "Windows
Performance Rating" vanishing, to the poor souls Treo not being recognized through "Windows Mobile Center" after SP1 installation. There could be
many explanations for this happening: Either the guys laptop is so sucky that Vista did him a favor by simply hiding crap results, and his phone may
no longer sync to Mobile center because he has so few friends and contacts it just isn't worth it.
Vista may of done the guy a
favour.
Or Vista is indeed broke, and Microsoft need to sort it. Either way I am sick of all the ranting as of late, so much so that I will
be installing Windows Vista x64 SP1 just to annoy websites like iTWire,
InfoWorld and CNet (Staff bloggers) and all of
their readers to show them that any normal user can install Vista x64 SP1 and have everything work afterwards. Meanwhile a whambulance has been
dispatched to the above mentioned sites to pick up the whiney tossers.

25.02.2008Vista SP1 to be just 45MB over Windows Update?
Mary Jo Foley got a chance to
see a note sent to certain
testers of Vista SP1 earlier
this month and quite a few
interesting factoids have
turned up in it:
Q: How big is SP1?
A: Windows Vista
SP1 is approximately 45 MB
when delivered over Windows
Update and is designed to not
significantly change the UI or
regress application
compatibility.
Q: What are some examples
of support for emerging
technologies and
standards?
A:
With SP1, Windows Vista can
boot via EFI (Extensible
Firmware Interface) on an x64
machine. SP1 supports ExFAT, a
new file format that will be
used in flash memory storage
and consumer devices Support
for SD Advanced DMA Support to
improve transfer performance
and decrease CPU utilization
is part of SP1

Andrzej Lipka: When you try to open the Distributed Application Designer from a console installed on an x64 server you may see the console crashes

This seems to be a bug in SP1 RC. To work around it
use a console from an x86-32 (32 bit) machine to connect to the x64 server.

25.04.2006Deployed: Windows Vista SP1 RC on ALL of my PCs
Brandon LeBlanc: Today Nick announced the availability of the release candidate for Windows Vista SP1. I had a chance to get the RC build of Windows
Vista SP1 installed a few days ago. I decided to roll the RC out on all of my PCs which showcase a variety of device types and scenarios:
- My Main Desktop PC running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 - check.
- My Test/Work PC running Windows Vista Business - check.
- My Dell Vostro 1500 Laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate - check.
- My Samsung Q1 UMPC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.
- My Digital CableCard PC running Windows Vista Home Premium - check.
In installing the RC on my PCs, I did a combination of
using the standalone installer and Windows Update. Before proceeding to install the SP1 RC bits, I first needed to uninstall the SP1 beta bits first.
Users looking to install the Windows Vista SP1 RC will need to uninstall any previous version of SP1 prior to the installation of the RC from either
Windows Update or the standalone installer.

06.12.2007Vista SP1 x86 appears on Torrent Sites
In the last few days, certain Neowin forum members have reported that an image of Vista SP1 x86 Final has leaked to torrent sites. This file is
supposedly a slipstreamed image of the final Service Pack 1 for Vista x86. It is allegedly available in various languages, including English. Since
many believe that this is indeed the download that Microsoft will provide in the upcoming weeks, I would like to emphasize that this is not the case.
This release is not official, nor is it genuine. I repeat: Vista SP1 has not gone final.
Neowin members are reporting that the file in
question may be SP1 Refresh 2 slipstreamed or simply a malware-filled release. I would like to remind our members not to post links to any Vista SP1
build, unless it comes directly from Microsoft’s servers.

20.03.2008New Laptop Windows Vista SP1 Virtual Machine World Record
Keith Combs: In this case,
a
picture is worth a thousand words. I spent some time this afternoon and evening setting up for a fun little test of the Lenovo ThinkPad T61p I
have. As youll recall from my previous post, my laptop is loaded up with 8GB of memory. So I thought it would be cool to fire up a bunch of virtual
machines to see how effectively Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V allocate and juggle memory. I was able to get fourteen operating system instances
running at the same time. The host OS is of course Windows Server 2008 Enterprise x64 with Hyper-V RC1. In the screenshot, youll notice I am running
six instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x64 and seven instances of Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 x86. Paging and disk I/O really went up after I
fired up VM number eight.

08.06.2008VS2008 SP1 and .NET FX Beta Performance Improvements
David Berg: Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is packed with new features, major updates to frameworks, and fixes. So much so that with everything installed
(including x64 and ia86 support) you would need to download and install about 1GB of updates. Which brings us to the first and most important
performance improvement you only download what you need!
VS2008 SP1 includes a new installation / update engine. You just
download the installer, which then analyzes your system installation, and only downloads the components you need. Thus a default installation of
VS2008 Team System will only download about 600mb (and less still if you dont have all the default components installed). Download performance will
vary substantially based on your internet connection and network contention; however, it generally outperforms an IE file download, and will
automatically restart in the middle if your network connection drops out and comes back. (However, if you cancel the install, it will restart at the
beginning.)
