Vista Sidebar showcases desktop-Web integration
Long Zheng has published some fantastic Windows Vista screencasts, which display the power of the Vista OS - released as a developer beta last week. The screencast that I was most interested in was the Sidebar. Similar in appearance and functionality to the Dashboard feature of Mac OS X Tiger, the Vista Sidebar allows users to manage their gadgets (Microsoft's term for widgets) and other content such as RSS feeds.

8.7.2007Maximizing Sidebar Gadgets
Many PC OEMs ship Windows
Vista computers with Windows
Sidebar enabled, usually only
displaying the simple clock,
photos and RSS feed gadgets.
You may've found that they
install their own home-grown
gadgets to show off additional
features or apps installed on
the PC, or as sales tools for
other products. You may even
have turned off the Sidebar
because you already have a
clock in the systray and you
use other ways to check RSS
feeds.
If so, you're
missing out, as there's a
Windows Sidebar gadget for
almost anything you might
want: PC utilities, music,
messaging, traffic reporting,
searching or just a quick game
can be yours with a click of
the mouse. If you haven't
taken the time to explore
gadgets beyond those loaded by
default, take a minute to
right-click the Sidebar and
select 'Add Gadgets.' From
there, click 'Get More
Gadgets Online' -- youll find
over 1000 different gadgets
available for download.
There are still other ways
to find gadgets: visit the
Microsoft
Gadgets Gallery,
Windows Live
Gallery and
Code
Project for hundreds more.
In addition, you'll find
links to resources for
developers and a way to submit
your own gadgets for others to
use.

Sarah Perez: I just saw

Sean Lyndersay's new Sidebar gadget called the "
WebSlice Viewer Gadget." This brilliant little
creation brings IE8's WebSlices (bits of web content that you can access from the new IE8 Favorites Bar) right to your desktop via a simple Vista
Sidebar gadget.
The gadget, currently
in alpha (you've been warned!), requires Vista (unknown if x64 supported,
but let us know), IE8, and a web page that has
some WebSlices. Each
instance of the WebSlice Viewer shows only one WebSlice, so you will need to open multiple gadgets to show multiple views.>

22.12.2006UniveRSS, A 3D RSS Reader from Microsoft for Windows Vista
In an email from MSDN
Microsoft silently mentions
the UniveRSS reader. After a
look i actually was quite
surprised. Microsoft took the
RSS possibilities from IE7 and
put them into a really
stunning 3D interface! The
application only works on
Windows Vista and requires a
Vista Premium Ready PC (With
WDDM drivers).
UniveRSS is a 3D RSS feed
reader for Windows Vista. It
leverages the Windows
Presentation Foundation and
provides a stunning way of
visualizing RSS feeds and
their content. It introduces a
full-screen 3D universe where
galaxies represent the folders
of your RSS feed directory,
and the stars are represented
by the spinning cubes that
hold the feed information.
Size and position of the feed
cubes indicate how many unread
items they contain.
You navigate through the
feed galaxies in a game-like
environment, freely moving in
all three dimensions.
Selecting items in lists will
turn the cube to the next side
displaying the item's content
including images. Just click
the right mouse buttons and
you turn back to the list view
or to the galaxy.
The RSS feed items are
currently only manageable in
the IE7 feed store.

05.12.2006Darn that pesky euro! RSS feed problem traced to currency character
Well, as soon as we start publicizing our RSS feeds -- and we have one new one just for Betanews Alpha -- we get reports of problems with them. I'm
able to corroborate some of what many Firefox users are reporting: With some Firefox installations, our RSS feeds have been coming up blank. Some,
though not all.
One thing we noticed: On systems where Firefox is installed along with a separate RSS news reader, our RSS feed pages
do
not turn up blank in Firefox. In fact, they look fine. On systems where no separate RSS reader is installed, our feed pages
do turn up
blank.
Our infrastructure man -- or perhaps better put, "InfraMan," Eric Steil -- discovered the problem this afternoon: Believe it
or not, it has to do with the character for the euro, the European currency. I won't type that character here because it may cause the problem, up
until Eric installs the solution. Believe it or not, for Firefox browsers that rely on Live Bookmarks, the inclusion of the euro character in the page
causes the whole feed to come up blank. Anyway, we've tracked down the problem, and we're implementing the fix right away...

03.02.2006Microsoft: Malware can disable UAC in Windows 7 "by design"
A month has barely passed since the public beta debut of Windows 7 and we have our first horror story. UAC (user account control) was the major gripe
with Windows Vista which annoyed most tech savvy users and confused ordinary consumers. Microsoft has changed the behavior in Windows 7, lowering the
requirement for user interaction when changing system settings. The apparent downside to this is, according to reports, the way Microsoft has changed
the behavior makes it extremely easy for malware authors to write code to disable UAC without user intervention.
