Sunken pirate ship back on the surface

As expected, The Pirate Bay is back online - in the Netherlands. An IP check shows it's hosted at Leaseweb, the same server Newnava and Torrentspy use. This provider doesn't easily move when threatened with law which is probably the reason for the choice.

The Pirate Bay four get an appeal

The Swedish court has ruled that the Pirate Bay four will receive an appeal, scheduled for November 9, 2009. The Pirate Bay four were convicted of "assisting in making copyright content available" through their website, The Pirate Bay. The ruling had put massive fines on the Pirate Bay four, at $3.6 million ($905,000 each) in fines and face up to one year in prison each. Since the trial, the Swedish government has ruled the four defendants "too broke" to pay for the damages. Instead the Swedish authorities started sending cease and desist letters to one of the Pirate Bay's ISP, bringing the website down. The website was later restored within hours of the shut down.

The Pirate Bay tracker gone for good

Today marks the end of an era, the end of The Pirate Bay tracker. The website is still up and running, but the owners of The Pirate Bay have decided to turn off their tracker and will not be re-enabling the tracker, leaving the DHT enabled for now. With the end of The Pirate Bay, the largest BitTorrent on the Internet, it appears that the courts have finally made an impact on pirating around the world. This makes a success for MPAA and RIAA, finally managing to get enough service providers to disconnect The Pirate Bay, making it extremely difficult for them to relocate and keep the site running.

Microsoft: Another Vista Reliability & Performance Update

Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs. Ever since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready (preview releases). The Windows Serviceability Team wants feedback on one such update, available for download at the Microsoft Download Center, before its expected release on Windows Update in January.

Windows Vista SP1 Update Resumes Tomorrow

From the Windows Vista Blog: I have a quick update for you about Windows Vista SP1. The Microsoft Update Blog contains some important information about updates to the SP1 prerequisite distribution plan. Starting tomorrow, we are resuming the automatic update and installation of the Servicing Stack Update.

In mid-April, we will begin distributing SP1 (in the first 5 languages) using the Automatic Update system. We have a lot of Windows users, so not everyone will get it on the same day. In fact, it will go to a small percentage of Windows Vista users each day. The exact timing of when you will receive it depends on when your PC is ready for Windows Vista SP1.

In addition to starting the automatic delivery of the first 5 languages, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that also we're on track for the initial release of SP1 in the remaining languages in mid-April.

Swedish Police Attempt to Block The Pirate Bay

A press release from the Swedish Pirate Party is reporting that the Swedish police are attempting to block access to The Pirate Bay by reclassifying it as a child pornography site. ISPs would then be asked to voluntarily block access to all Swedish citizens.

The Pirate Bay has been a thorn in the entertainment industry for its nearly four year existence. They have also thwarted numerous legal attempts to force it off line, including a May 2006 raid that failed to negate this immensely popular BitTorrent tracker.

Because of the inability to banish this nuisance from the face of the Internet, the Pirate Party is taking the position that this latest attempt is nothing more than a desperation move by the authorities...
