26.6.2007Why IE8 wont use the Webkit rendering engine
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's statement on "considering using Webkit for Internet Explorer" has raised
many speculations that IE8 may
use Webkit.
Here are the reasons why
Mary-Jo Foley, who is otherwise called as
'Microsoft Watcher' thinks IE8 wont use the Webkit rendering engine:
- IE8 is almost done
- Microsoft is pushing test cases,
not rendering engines
- Microsoft is not “consider(ing) adopting WebKit for Internet Explorer.”
She also adds that
would it be feasible for Microsoft make WebKit a plug-in to IE? Would the company consider doing so with IE 9 (which, if Microsoft sticks to its
current schedule, would be released in 2011 or so)?

28.10.2007Windows 7 build 7232 leaks, with new wallpaper
It's that time again, another week and another Windows 7 build leak. They are really starting to flow now leading up to RTM and this time there
are changes to report. Last week we had 7229 leak and this week it's build 7232.winmain.090610-1900 that has wriggled out of Microsoft's
Redmond HQ and is being distributed across the net. The most obvious visual change is that a new default wallpaper has been set and there is no more
betta fish. The new wallpaper is named harmony. Windows 7 is still on track for a July RTM, and it's possible that it may even RTM by the end of
June.

06.11.2009IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7
Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the
3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high
priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server
2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1.
Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

22.01.2009Windows DreamScene coming soon on Ultimate

Ultimate Extra was not there

Windows client
director, Jeff Putt has
confirmed that this extra will
not be available in its final

However, a technology preview
may be coming soon for Windows
Vista Ultimate users who want

Windows DreamScene enables
users to use looping
high-definition video content

wallpaper uses virtually no
CPU (just a little for
decoding the video).

Windows DreamScene yesterday
at the launch event which
showed Windows DreamScene
using an animated wallpaper
created by
Stardock
. The wallpaper they showed
will be available exclusively
at Neowin.net's partner site,

More information on
public availability for
Windows Vista Ultimate users
is expected soon.

30.01.2007On second thought, IE8 will default to full Web standards
Should Microsoft choose for IE8 to follow the standards developers want or the ones they use ? It's been a tough call, and late
yesterday, the company reversed that call. Unlike IE7, IE8 will by default use "Standards mode."..
betanews.com -
04.03.2008Microsoft to snub standards compliant mode in IE8
Exclusive sources close to the Internet Explorer development team are reporting that latest internal builds of IE8 have deactivated the new 'super
standards compliant' mode. Worse still, this change is likely to be permanent if hushed proposals at the software giant are to approved.
Current beta releases of IE8 sport the new Webslices feature allowing users to subscribe to a portion of a web page in a manner similar to RSS.
Senior executives at Microsoft have suggested that focusing on innovation within the consumer browser market in similar ways would provide a greater
return for shareholders than attempting to improve standards support in the popular browser.
Going forward, it is unclear if this paradigm
shift will continue to the development of IE9 or if this decision solely affects the current product development cycle for IE8. Our sources declined
to name individuals involved in the discussion, but an announcement is expected on the public development blog imminently.
Minor CSS
changes unrelated to standards support are still expected when the new browser version ships later this year. The introduction of the blink parameter
for the text-decoration CSS property, a change described as "important for the dynamic nature of the web", is one of the enhancements more
controversial among the community.

01.04.2008IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

03.04.2009First Look: Internet Explorer 8
Larry Larsen: Surprise! IE8 beta is going to be
available for download starting today at 12:00 PST. Matthew Lapsen from the IE team gave me a spur of the moment demo for you
all showing us some of the core features that power users will enjoy. Keep in mind that this is a developer preview of IE8, so the way it looks may
change a little.
A couple highlights I think you'll really like include Activities and Webslices. Activities include doing a
contextual search from something highlighted on a website. Webslices are the ability to track a specific section of a site, like a custom RSS feed. So
you could make a button on the top of your browser that tracks an eBay auction or the status of our friends on Facebook.

05.03.2008Microsoft continues to warn of IE8 lock-in for XP SP3 users
Last year when Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Jane Maliouta announced that consumers using Windows XP SP3 would be locked-in with the

IE8 RC1. You can obtain IE8 RC1 from the links on this page. To see if you're one of the people who will have IE8 locked in, follow these steps.

The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This
could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced
earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the
beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

31.12.2008Microsoft to push IE8 as an automatic update
Microsoft has announced it plans to offer IE8 via Windows Update. In a move that will likely anger rivals such as Apple and Google, Microsoft will be
pushing Internet Explorer 8 via Windows Update. Google raised concerns back in 2006 when IE7 was originally released via Windows Update. Apple
received negative press last year when it tried to push Safari to iTunes users. Many users never had Safari installed but it was listed under
Apple's software update program for install. The IE8 update will be released as the highest priority update for each operating system. For
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, it will be listed as Important.

As we all know, IE8 is coming out soon (Beta 2 is already released) and one of the major performance changes in IE8 is opening up to 6 concurrent

10.10.2008IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster
One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself
how much faster it
really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its
competitors. Google has put
a benchmark it used while creating their
Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its
predecessor. So I ran it.
I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.
* IE7 benched in at 24, 23
and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39
As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs
to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

04.09.2008IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.
