Microsoft To Ship All OS Bits With Every Version Of Vista
Microsoft plans to market several versions of Vista but will distribute all of the OS bits with every product shipped so users can easily unlock and step up to more full-featured versions using electronic keys, sources said.
"No matter which edition you buy you get all the bits and a key to unlock it. Everyone will have all the bits," said one source familiar with Microsoft's plans. "Right now we maintain master images for each version of Windows XP and it's a lot of work. Now there's just one master image."

29.04.2009The Internet Explorer 8 User-Agent String
Jason Cox: As Dean
announced, a beta version of Internet
Explorer 8 will be released in the first half of 2008.
The HTTP headers of every web request contain a simple string called
the "User-Agent" that allows servers to identify the type and version of the visitors browser. For a deeper understanding of the User-Agent
string, please see
Understanding User-Agent Strings.
When released, the IE8
beta will introduce an updated User-Agent string. For IE8, weve simply replaced "MSIE 7.0" with "MSIE 8.0". For example, on Windows
Vista, IE8 sends:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0 ; Windows NT 6.0)

29.01.2009Web address system faces changes
The way the internet handles website domains is going to change, following an update to the core "addressing system".
If we continue with
the current way of allocating web addresses, we will run out of available domain names by 2011.
So the internet's master address book
is being updated to include records written in a new format, IP version 6, which will help to create millions of new potential web addresses.
The problem occurs because people and the internet use two different methods to call up web pages: we type words into the address bar of our
browser, whereas our computers translate that into a string of numbers to find the page that you are looking for. This numerical string is taken from
the internet's master address book of domains.

Microsofts Vista Capable class action lawsuit is in the news again, this time because Microsoft wants an
appeals court to reverse the decision to have granted the case official ˜class action status.
The whole situation bubbled up

02.04.2007Everything youve read about Vista DRM is wrong (Part 1)
Last month, I wrote about the
FUD surrounding Windows Vista and DRM. The
FUDmaster is Peter Gutmann, a New Zealand researcher who wrote a paper last December that made a series of outrageous and inflammatory claims about
Windows Vista. Since then, Gutmann has expanded the paper to more than four times its original size. The
current version available on Gutmanns website clocks in at
more than 26,000 words, making it longer than some recent works of fiction.
And length isnt the only thing Gutmanns paper has in
common with the average pulp novel. Gutmanns work is riddled with factual errors, mistaken assumptions and unproven assertions, distortions,
contradictions, misquotes, and outright untruths. In short, its a work of fiction all on its own.
Gutmann is a clever writer, and
hes able to string together nouns, verbs, technical terms, and acronyms in ways that sound persuasive. In this three-part series (look for Parts 2 and
3 later this week), Im going to dig deep into Gutmanns work and show you just where he got it wrong.
