Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.

Even with Vista SP1, Hackers Still Crack WGA

The fact that Microsoft has relaxed its antipiracy mechanism built into Windows Vista concomitantly with the release of Service Pack 1 failed to stop hackers from providing a crack for the latest version of Windows Genuine Advantage Validation. Various reports point out that Genuine Advantage Validation and Notifications versions 1.7.69.1 (1.7.0069.1) and 1.7.69.2 released in March 2008, following the March 18 availability of Windows Vista SP1 through Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center, have been cracked.

The workaround is designed to be integrated with pirated copies of Windows XP and Windows Vista in order to render useless the WGA Validation mechanism. According to the reports, applying the WGA crack will permit users of counterfeit versions of Windows to access and download items from Windows Update, Microsoft Download Center and Microsoft Update. The pirated operating systems with the cracked WGA will pass all validations on Microsoft's websites and offer anything from updates to applications that are restricted to users of genuine operating systems only.

Official Way to Use Vista without Activation 120 Days

Official Way to Install and Use Windows Vista without Activation for Free for 120 Days

By default, Windows Vista can be installed, used and run without any license, product key or the need of activation for 30 days grace period, for purpose of trial or evaluation. Although Microsoft initially stressed that users should purchase a license with valid product key before the trial period expires, or else Windows Vista will lock into Reduced Functionality Mode. However, a "rearm" method has long since been discovered to be able to extend, or reset the remaining time for activation to another fresh 30 days, for up to 3 times.

Now Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista can be used and run for 120 days or 4 months ( 3 rearms ), and extending the activation grace period is not a violation of the Vista End User License Agreement (EULA). All versions of Vista include Windows Vista Ultimate allow a 30-day free period without activation, except the corporate-oriented Vista Enterprise, which supports only a three-day trial.

Microsoft Application Virtualization (Formerly SoftGrid) 4.5 Trial Guides

These trial guides provide step by step directions for experiencing application virtualization. Two different types of trial guides are available based upon the aspects of Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5 you would like to review:

  • The standalone trial guide will walk you through the creation of a virtualized application and execution of the application on the client without the need to setup any infrastructure. This is the simplest trial of Microsoft Application Virtualization.

  • The full trial guide walks the user through the same application virtualization capabilities as the standalone guide; however it also includes the steps to setup the publishing and streaming infrastructure options as well.

Once you have completed the setup steps from either guide, you will be able to test the benefits of Microsoft Application Virtualization in your own environment.

America to crack down on blogger payola

US regulators are to crack down on bloggers who fail to disclose money or gifts received from companies when reviewing their products. In the new policy from the Federal Trade Commission, offending bloggers could eventually face fines of up to $11,000 (£6,900) per violation, according to the BBC. So-called payola schemes have increased in recent years, with marketers realising the potential of encouraging bloggers and forum contributors to produce reviews or testimonials on their products in exchange for money of freebies. Although the guidelines released by the FTC are not binding by law, they are interpretations of the law that hope to help advertisers comply with regulations, such as those on disclosing endorsements.

Nokia Tests on New Mobile Broadband Standard Crack 100 Mbps

Nokia announced today that the LSTI (LTE/SAE Trial Initiative) had achieved a 100 megabits-per-second data transfer speed in recent tests.

LTE/SAE is an evolved version of today's mobile phone radio access technology designed for faster data transfer with a simplified architecture, using new transmission schemes and advanced antenna technology. Initial deployment configurations are specified to have downlink rates above 100 Mbps and uplink rates above 50 Mbps.

The initiative, launched in May by telecommunications companies Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, France Telecom/Orange, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, T-Mobile and Vodafone, seeks to prove to the 3G Partnership Project (3GPP) the potential of LTE/SAE as a new standard. To do this, the project has to go through three phases: proof of concept, interoperability, and trial.

Another Vista Activation Crack Appears

Buzz about a Windows Vista zero-day vulnerability is troubling enough (although probably overblown). Now, there appears to be a second product activation hack, this one designed to fool the activation timer into not counting down. The activation hack is quite different from the first one, which involved setting up a Key Management Service server. Microsoft also released an update blocking hybrid testing/final Vista "Monster" code that could bypass product activation.

"Recently it has been reported that activation of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system has been compromised," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement in response to a Microsoft Watch inquiry. "Microsoft is investigating this reported activation breach; however, there is no concrete evidence that this breach has been automated to the point that it is widely deployable." The not "widely deployable" statement, while likely true, isn't denial of an actual activation breach.

I've read instructions, which I won't link to, and comments from people successfully trying the so-called Time Stopper hack; I haven't tested it and wouldn't because of possible security breach when applying a downloaded crack as part of the process. As the Microsoft spokesperson acknowledged, there are reports about the crack, which requires setting a computer's BIOS clock to 2099. The hack does work on 32-bit Windows Vista installations but not necessarily 64-bit versions. The process requires some other Windows changes and eventual clock reset from within Vista leading to a perpetual state of 30 days to activation.

Potential pirates, not Vista, get cracked

35 days before Windows XP was officially released, a pirated key, called the "devils0wn", began circulating around the web which allowed users to run a pirated copy of the operating system. Since then, the key has been used thousands of times and is now a part of Windows XP history. Trying to follow in devils0wn's footsteps, a new crack for Windows Vista is rumored to have become available. Called "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06", the key reportedly unlocks any version of Vista. Sounds great for pirates, right? Maybe it is, depending where you stand on software piracy.

Those who download "Windows Vista All Versions Activation 21.11.06" will end up with anything but a cracked version of Vista. The file is neither a crack nor key generator, but it is a trojan installer that installs the malware known as "Trojan-PSW.Win32.LdPinch.aze ." According to APC Magazine, most antivirus scanners will recognize the trojan, but NOD32 and Norton's latest signatures do not.

While most of us dread the thought of a new piece of malware in the wild, it's hard not to like the motive behind this trojan. Nevertheless, any propagation of malware is a bad thing so I'm happy to hear that most scanners can stop this one.

The Pirate Bay trial, '80% of our torrents are legal'

The ongoing trial for The Pirate Bay is attracting international attention over the court case that could change the internet forever. Neowin has been keeping up with the trial and the latest argument from TPB ( The Pirate Bay) is that "n internal survey revealed that 80% of 1000 torrents observed are, in fact, legal". Sunde, the spokes person for TPB, went on to argue that there is more copyrighted material on YouTube than on TPB. The prosecutors are also trying to establish that a hierarchy does exist at TPB but appear to be failing at solidifying their case. "Someone must ultimately decide whether to put up a certain text or graphic," asked Roswall. "No," Neij replied. "Why?
