Vista Transformation Pack 9

An anxious crowd of VTP users hoping to get their hands on the next version of VTP has had their prayers answered today.

VTP9 has officially been released. Back, and better than ever, VTP9 is sure to be an eye-popper, even for those who have already been using VTP for years.

Some of the new features include:

- New Lightweight "Vista Rainbar" (A sidebar based on the Rainmeter API)
- Improved versions of the highly acclaimed ViStart and ViOrb pair
- A more stable version of TrueTransparency (for emulating the transparent 'glass' we all like in Vista
- 'Visplore,' a new file explorer that has a glass toolbar and built-in search
- Much, much more...

Perhaps some of the best improvements are a supposedly completely stable x64 installer, Windows XP SP3 compatibility and complete install customization right in the installer.

Without further ado, JCXP presents you with Version 9 of Vista Transformation Pack!

Fix Windows Vista Fonts

This just in from Chris Pirillo on Windows Vista inconsistency's, this time it's the fonts:

I’ve been labeled a nitipicker for seeing skipped details that few others seem to see on the surface of an application’s user interface. Guilty as charged! Download this simple registry patch, but please read the entire post before applying it?

I’m not happy that Microsoft has added yet another shell font to the mix with Windows Vista: Segoe UI. On its own, Segoe UI is an awesome font - but when it’s slapped up against Tahoma, MS Sans Serif, Microsoft Sans Serif, and/or Arial - it’s no longer a clean user experience. In fact, Vista is downright messy when it comes to shell fonts - with some aliased faces reaching back to the days of Windows 3.11!

These blatant font oversights were shoved onto the backburner for the sake of (a) 100% backwards compatibility and (b) time. However, that didn’t stop me from diving into REGEDIT and setting things straight. The good news? I believe I’ve figured out how to make everything inside of Windows Vista stick to Segoe UI. It’s a subtle, yet radical, transformation.

Desktop PC not dead, just changing

The traditional desktop PC is not yet doomed, but is going through a transformation, according to HP.

While laptops are becoming increasingly attractive to consumers and small businesses, the majority of sales to larger businesses are still of desktop PCs.

Speaking at the launch of a series of new products from HP in New York, Alberto Bozzo, the company's European personal systems group general manager of commercial products, said: "The reality is the desktop is not dead -- it is transforming into something else."

Bozzo said innovation would come in virtualised client technologies such as thin clients, blade servers and blade PCs. "This is where the desktop is going. is small at the moment but it is an emerging technology -- small from a volume point of view, but promising," he said...

Update: "Vista Capable" trial

The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.
