22.02.2008Vista SP1 Beta 1 to launch in mid-July, sources say
It's official: We are now in
the under-promise and
over-deliver era at Microsoft.
Just when Microsoft
had customers, partners and
competitors all believing that
it was going to delay the
first service pack for Vista
not releasing a first beta of
it until just before year-end
the company is set to deliver
Beta 1 of Vista SP1 in
mid-July.
Word (from
various sources who asked not
to be named) is Microsoft is
gearing up to drop Vista SP1
some time the week of July 16.
And despite what Microsoft
seemingly led Google, the U.S.
Department of Justice and
other company watchers to
believe, the final version of
Vista SP1 is sounding like
November 2007.
Microsoft is expected to
emphasize that SP1 is more
about fixes than new features.
Most of the elements of SP1
are expected to enhance or
supplment features that are
already part of Vista, sources
said.
In addition to
desktop-search modifications,
heres a list of other fixes
likely to make it in:
-
Performance tweaks lessening
the amount of time it takes to
copy files and shut down Vista
machines (Yeah, I know
Microsoft said Vista shutdown
speed wasnt an issue. Guess
users werent so crazy, after
all.)
- Improved
transfer performance and
decreased CPU utilization via
support for SD Advanced Direct
Memory Access (DMA)
- Support for ExFat, the
Windows file format for flash
memory storage and other
consumer devices
-
Improvements to BitLocker
Drive Encryption to allow not
just encryption of the whole
Vista volume, but also locally
created data volumes
- The ability to boot
Extensible Firmware Interface
(EFI) on an x64 machine
- Improved success rate
for firewalled MeetingSpace
and Remote Assistance
connections

09.07.2007Microsoft: Vista service pack coming in '08
Now is the time and the time is now: let's talk about Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). Much has been made of what will or will not be included in
SP1 and when it will be released (some accurate, some otherwise). I'm here to set the story straight: we're in the process of developing and
deploying a Beta version of SP1. This post will describe for you what to expect from that effort and how you can be involved in the process.
First, a note on service packs. As you are aware, service packs are part of our traditional software lifecycle; they're something we do for most
major products as a commitment to continuous improvement. But, the servicing situation has changed with the advent of Windows Vista, as we no longer
rely solely on service packs as the main vehicle used to deploy system fixes and improvements. The Windows Update online service is one new way to
deliver many OS improvements. For example, yesterday in advance of SP1 we released via Windows Update two separate improvements to Windows Vista's
reliability and performance. We did this prior to SP1 in lieu of requiring customers to wait for these fixes to be rolled into a single service pack.
Beyond this, we improve the Windows Vista experience by continuing to work closely with software partners to ensure application compatibility. We
likewise align efforts with partners on the hardware side of the business to broaden the range of devices that work with Windows Vista and to
constantly improve device driver quality.

29.08.2007Are service packs really passe?
Are there any real reasons other than psychological ones to wait for a first service pack (SP) of Windows Vista before deploying?
Microsoft’s position, since the company released Vista to manufacturing last year, has been that users didn’t need delay their
deployments until the delivery of SP1 because the team would
push out new updates and fixes
continually via Windows Update, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and other patching mechanisms. Just this week, in fact, Microsoft delivered
via Windows Update
two mega hotfix packs (performance and compatibility) for Windows Vista
that include many of the fixes that will be part of
Vista Service Pack (SP) 1, which now is due
in Q1 2008.
But some say service packs still do matter. Over on the Windows Connected blog, Josh Phillips has a list of
why some users still prefer to wait for
a service pack before deploying.
First on Phillips’ list: Service packs are more thoroughly and rigorously tested than
individual udpates. There’s also the convenience factor. For enterprise users, a single update like a service pack is much easier to manage in a
controlled way than are lots of incremental updates.

30.07.2007Performance improvements in WPF in .Net 3.5 / 3.0 SP1
Below is a list of the performance improvements that you can expect to see in WPF in .Net 3.5 and .Net 3.0 SP1:
1. Animations
Smoothing Improvements
- WPF Animation in .Net 3.0 SP1 is much smother.
- These improvements are more noticeable on Vista and
especially in upcoming Vista SP1, which includes additional smoothing in the Desktop Windowing Manager (DWM).
2. Layered Windows
Improvements
Layered Window performance was one of top customer complaints. They are now addressed with a QFE/Hotfix.
These hotfixes
are not available for direct download. End users should call Microsoft PSS to obtain them.
Developers and OEMs can contact Microsoft
PSS to discuss redistribution rights.
The hotfixes will be included in the next service pack of Microsoft OSs

11.10.2007Microsoft comes clean on Vista SP1 driver and vLite issues
As you may have been aware having certain drivers installed on Vista will prevent SP1 from installing. Microsoft had not exactly been forthcoming on
which drivers but has now made the list available to the public.
The company listed the affected drivers in a
support article. It consists of mostly audio and display drivers but there are
warnings for fingerprint readers as well.
Additionally, users are warned against using vLite to strip features out of a Vista
installation and install using it. Microsoft says that could also prevent the installation of Vista SP1. The previous support article lists
possible causes and solutions.

19.03.2008Leaked Vista Hotfixes to be broadly available in the near future
Microsoft Corp. confirmed
today that the Vista hot-fix
packs that have leaked to the
Web will be issued to all
users.
"We
plan to make these two updates
broadly available via Windows
Update in the near future," a
company spokeswoman said in an
e-mail.
The
two updates, dubbed "Vista
Performance and Reliability
Pack" and "Vista
Compatibility and Reliability
Pack," were posted over the
weekend to a third-party
download site after being
leaked from a group of Windows
Server 2008 testers. The list
of fixes -- which include
performance improvements to
Vista's sleep mode and speed
increases in copying or moving
large directories -- led some
users yesterday to speculate
that the updates were the
forerunner of Vista Service
Pack 1 (SP1), a major upgrade
that many businesses want to
see before they widely deploy
the new operating system. ..

29.08.2007Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 on MSDN & TechNet (Plus)
Microsoft sent out a mail on Wednesday informing MSDN and TechNet Plus users that Windows Vista SP1 images as well as Windows Server 2008 (RTM) have
been made available to subscribers. Upon checking however, I was unable to find the promised SP1 image on my TechNet subscription.
Microsoft
had last
week, backpedaled and decided to move the release for certain
customers and beta testers up from mid-March to
mid-to-late-February. I imagine some subscribers have yet to see it appear on their download list but should all go according to plan, those images
should be made available before March.
Up to 3 pre-requisites will start appearing through Windows Update for everyone else before
mid-March, which is required before SP1 can be installed on Windows Vista. This is due to an update of the update service from within Windows that is
required before SP1 can be installed.

Free support doesn't lead to new love for Vista SP1
Microsoft is working hard to nudge customers onto the Windows Vista bandwagon, offering free support to those migrating to Vista SP1. But IT
administrators continue to resist making the kind of aggressive deployments Microsoft would like to see across the board.
Microsoft released Windows Vista SP1 last week, complete with security fixes and other patches Microsoft produced between Vista's launch in early
2007 and the end of last year. Many Windows administrators delayed installing Vista until at least the first service pack. Administrators who tested Vista SP1 in beta gave it poor reviews.
Attitudes haven't changed much since the service pack's release last week.

Changes to UAC in Vista SP1: Much less than meets the eye
A video is making the rounds showing how Vista SP1 has significantly improved Vista's immensely annoying User Account Control (UAC). But there
appears to be less to the improvement than meets the eye --- hardly any changes were made to UAC in SP1, and it remains a very big Vista annoyance.
Microsoft blogger Michael Kleef has
made a video that he says illustrates how much better UAC is under SP1 than before SP1. It very nicely shows that when you create a new folder in
Program Files, you only need to go through one UAC prompt under Vista SP1, rather than four previously.

Collection of published Vista SP1 API changes from MSDN
Microsoft might choose not to
tell its enthusiasts anything
about Windows Vista Service
Pack 1, but they cant afford
to keep it a secret to the
development community.
For the same reasons some
argue SP1 is the Holy Grail
for Windows Vista, a newer
kernel means changes to a very
significant component of an
operating system. However
since this is a significantly
minor update to the kernel
compared to what was endured
just months ago, APIs have
already been added, changed
and even obsoleted.
Since Microsoft wouldnt
publish any documentation of
their own for the time being,
here is a list Ive compiled
from the MSDN Library of all
the changes taking effect in
Vista SP1 published to-date.
Whilst most of these
documentation wont make sense
for non-developers (myself
included), think of it like
reading a foreign-language
newspaper - find all the
proper nouns then make up the
story.

Mary Jo Foley Will Windows Service Pack History Repeat Itself?
Mary Jo Foley: One of my editors at Redmond magazine -- the ever-doubting Ed Scannell -- recently posed an interesting hypothetical question about the
future of Windows. Might Microsoft yank some features planned for Windows 7 and put them into a Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 2 that would include
not just fixes, but also new features?
In other words: Could Windows history repeat itself, with Vista SP2 taking the form of a
whole new operating system release -- in everything other than name -- a la Windows XP SP2?
Microsoft officials said last year
not to expect Vista SP1 to be anything like XP SP2. Vista SP1 was designed to be a collection of fixes and patches, aimed at improving security,
reliability and performance. But the 'Softies haven't said anything about their thinking in regard to Vista SP2. Might Microsoft use the next Vista
SP to deliver some of the features that otherwise might have to wait for Windows 7, currently slated for 2010?
As tasty as that
option might sound to some, I'd give it a very low likelihood for a few reasons.
