29.01.2009Another Vista Activation Crack Appears
Buzz about a Windows Vista
zero-day vulnerability is
troubling enough (although
probably overblown). Now,
there appears to be a second
product activation hack, this
one designed to fool the
activation timer into not
counting down. The activation
hack is quite different from
the first one, which involved
setting up a Key Management
Service server. Microsoft also
released an update blocking
hybrid testing/final Vista
"Monster" code that could
bypass product activation.
"Recently it has been
reported that activation of
Microsoft's Windows Vista
operating system has been
compromised," a Microsoft
spokesperson said in a
statement in response to a
Microsoft Watch inquiry.
"Microsoft is investigating
this reported activation
breach; however, there is no
concrete evidence that this
breach has been automated to
the point that it is widely
deployable." The not "widely
deployable" statement, while
likely true, isn't denial of
an actual activation breach.
I've read
instructions, which I won't
link to, and comments from
people successfully trying the
so-called Time Stopper hack; I
haven't tested it and
wouldn't because of possible
security breach when applying
a downloaded crack as part of
the process. As the Microsoft
spokesperson acknowledged,
there are reports about the
crack, which requires setting
a computer's BIOS clock to
2099. The hack does work on
32-bit Windows Vista
installations but not
necessarily 64-bit versions.
The process requires some
other Windows changes and
eventual clock reset from
within Vista leading to a
perpetual state of 30 days to
activation.

made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

unaffected.

terms of use agreed to when
they purchased the upgrade

"As such, we believe only a
very small percentage of
people will take the time to
implement this workaround, and
we encourage all customers to
follow our official guidelines
for upgrading to Windows
Vista."
Microsoft added that it does
not have any plans to disable
the workaround at this
time.

09.08.2006$10,000 Says Windows Vista
Won't Ship on Time
Earlier this week Bill Gates
said there was an 80 percent
chance Windows Vista would
ship in January 2007 as
scheduled.
At
the time I said "I wouldn't
make any bets with odds like
that," and neither would Mac
developer Wil Shipley--he
wants to bet Bill $10,000 that
Vista won't ship by next
January, and he's giving the
Microsoft chairman 3 to 1 odds
(which, for the
math-challenged, is better
than Bill's 80%, or
4:1).
Of
course, Gates will never take
him or anyone else (except
maybe Ballmer or Allchin) up
on that bet, but it would be
nice to see him put his money,
as Shipley says, where his
mouth is.

03.02.2007Vista: None for All?
Maybe The Three Musketeers motto, "One for all, and all for one," should have an extra "n" or two when referring to Windows Vista.
I've wondered after doing several channel checks on Windows Vista adoption. The results, while arguably anecdotal, are grisly. Businesses
aren't just taking their time deploying. Some early adopters have switched back to Windows XP.
Yesterday, I spoke with a VAR
buddy who has several large clients in the Washington, DC metro area. His largest client, a sizable software developer, is sticking with XP because he
demanded it. For a short time, the company president used Vista on a new, Sony VAIO T series notebook but later switched back to XP.
"Everyoneevery single personthat I put on Vista has switched back to XP," he said. "It's too complicated."

26.10.2006Workaround Discovered For "Clean Install" With Vista Upgrade
DailyTech has posted a 7-step
workaround courtesy of Paul
Thurrott (via Microsoft
internal documents) on how to
perform a clean install with a
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD. Per
Microsoft's new licensing
requirements for Vista, users
are required to install a
Windows Vista Upgrade from
within Windows XP and to make
matters worse, the Windows XP
license is forfeited. The
process may be tedious, but
few will argue when they
compare the price differences
between the upgrade and retail
versions. Here we go:
- Boot from the
Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and
start the setup
program.
- When prompted
to enter your product key, DO
NOT enter it. Click "Next"
and proceed with setup. This
will install Windows Vista as
a 30-day trial.
- When
prompted, select the edition
of Vista which you have
purchased and continue with
setup.
- Once setup has
been completed and you have
been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the
install program from within
Windows Vista.
- This
time, type in your product key
when prompted.
- When
asked whether to perform an
Upgrade or Custom (advanced)
install, choose Custom
(advanced) to perform a clean
install of Vista. Yes, this
means that you will have to
install Vista for a second
time.
- Once setup has
completed for the second time,
you should be able to activate
Windows Vista normally. You
can also delete the
Windows.old directory which
contains information from the
first Vista
install.

31.01.2007Windows Vista Security One Year Later
Now that Windows Vista has been available to business customers for more than a year, it’s a good time to go back and look at how it’s
holding up from a security perspective. I think that it’s fair to say that Windows Vista is proving to be the most secure version of the
Windows to date. Our investments in the SDL and our defense in depth approach to building Windows Vista seem to be paying off. Let’s take a
look at some areas that we’ve made progress in: the impact of defense-in-depth; Internet Explorer 7’s protection of personal information;
vulnerabilities and infections; and cost savings. First, let’s look at the impact of defense-in-depth features like User Account Control and
Internet Explorer Protected Mode. These features have helped reduce both the risk and severity of security bulletins, giving enterprises more time to
deploy patches:

24.01.2008XP SP2 vs. Vista RTM vs. Vista SP1: Gaming benchmark
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Here are the benchmark results that many of you have been waiting for - a look at how well ten popular games work on XP SP2,
Vista RTM and Vista SP1.
Its been nearly a year since I took a look at the state of gaming under the Vista OS. The last time I
compared XP SP2 to Vista, I was disappointed with Microsofts new OS as a gaming platform because I could get far more bang for my bucks out of XP than
I could out of the new OS. Partly I put this down to immature drivers, but on the whole I was convinced that at the core of the problem was Vista.
So, is Vista worth bothering with as a gaming platform?

28.02.2008PDC 2009: Scuttling huge chunks of Vista architecture for a faster Windows 7
The reason Windows Vista seemed slow, and somehow, strangely seemed even slower over time, is now abundantly clear to Microsoft's architects: The
evolution of computer hardware , particularly the CPU, exceeded anyone's expectations at the time of Vista's premiere in early 2007. But the
surge in virtualization, coupled with the rise of the multicore era, produced a new reality where suddenly Vista found itself managing systems with
more than 64 total cores...
