Office 12 to Feature 'Super Tooltips'

Tooltips, those little yellow popup boxes that provide information on a button or menu option, have become an indispensable part of the modern user interface. Now, Microsoft is looking to extend their usefulness by introducing what it calls "Super Tooltips" in the upcoming release of Office 12.

The next-generation Office suite from Microsoft is already slated to bring a major UI makeover. Standard toolbars have been replaced with task-oriented "Ribbons" that include features pertinent to the current job. But such a change will require a learning curve, which is where the new larger tooltips come in.

Built-in Administrator Account Disabled

Darren Canavor, Program Manager on the UAC team has made a post on the Windows Vista Security blog about changes to the behavior of the built-in Administrator account:

“In Windows Vista we made numerous changes to our user account model. Standard users are now the default user type for new accounts created after initial setup. The Power Users group is effectively deprecated. In addition, we’ve made it much easier to run as a standard user and even administrators run with limited Windows privileges and user rights by default. But people often ask us, “What about the built-in administrator account? Isn’t it a security risk to have an administrator account with no password?”  Yes, in some cases this administrator account could be used to circumvent other security mechanisms. For example, parental controls could not be effective if the child could simply login with the built-in administrator account and do whatever they want, including disabling the Parental Controls.

In Windows Vista RC1 we will have completed a series of changes to disable the built in administrator account under most circumstances. These changes apply to the default administrator account named Administrator, which is created during setup.”

Windows 7: User Account Control (UAC) overview

In part one of our overview of Windows 7, we looked into Federated Search. In part two, we look into the much criticized feature of Windows Vista - The User Account Control One of the highly criticized features in Windows Vista is the User Account Control(UAC) which prompts up a dialog box seeking users' permission to continue or stop whenever a system-level change is made. The problem with Vista is that even the default user account which is created during the install, who is a protected administrator (unlike in XP where the user is an Administrator), could not bypass the UAC until its tweaked.

Twitter administrator account hacked, others compromised

It seems Twitter is still having its share of security trouble, because according to Cnet, a person by the name of Hacker Croll was able to hack into a Twitter administrator account, by guessing the secret question to reset the administrator's password on a Yahoo e-mail account where the Twitter password was located. This person was also able to view the details of 10 other accounts including Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher according to screenshots posted to a French blog site. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said that while no account information was altered or removed in any way, email address, mobile phone number, and the list of accounts blocked by that user were viewed.

Whats new with backup and Restore on Vista SP1

Christine Fok: Vista SP1 Backup & Restore contains many updates that improve reliability. Great effort has been put into improving the overall quality of File Backup, Complete PC Backup and System Restore.

Many of those important changes may not be visible to users, but if you run Backup and Restore tools, you can see some functionality improvements that many users had asked for:

Backing-up EFS files

File Backup now backs up EFS (Encrypting File System) encrypted files. For those concerned with security, the encryption on those files are kept throughout the process. So dont worry, you wont compromise your documents security by using our Vista SP1 backup tool.

Restoring Complete PC to a new motherboard

With SP1, you can use Complete PC Restore to a new motherboard that uses previously absent disk controller. That means, if the new hardware requires an inbox driver that was previously disabled when the Complete PC backup was taken, the required critical driver will be enabled in the last stage of the restore to ensure the machine will be bootable.

OTS credentials for scheduling Backup

In Vista (pre-SP1), only someone logged in as administrator could configure backup. Now, its possible for standard users to configure a backup. When scheduling a backup, standard users will be asked to supply administrator credentials. That is what we call over-the-shoulder (OTS) credentials. That is because¦ well, if the user doesnt know the credentials, the administrator usually type it over the users shoulder :-)

Enable Vista's hidden administrator account, and password-protect its equivalent in XP

You probably know about the "hidden" administrator account in Windows XP. It's the only account on XP systems on which no other accounts have been created. Until you add a new account, you zip right to the desktop when you boot the OS, with no stop at the Welcome screen. Once you set up one or more new accounts, the default administrator disappears, though you can bring it back in both XP Home and Pro (more on this below).

Measuring up Windows 7s new "super" taskbar

Long Zheng: For some users, one hurdle of the new "superbar" is its enormous size, or so it appears. Together with a measuring tape in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, I counted. Soon enough, I grew impatient and resorted to Photoshop instead. Here's how they measured up...

Experimental Super 3G network could reach 300Mbps

Japan-based NTT DoCoMo announced today that it plans to begin testing on an experimental "Super 3G" system for extra-high-speed data on mobile devices.

The country's largest mobile carrier said that it hopes to achieve an impressive 300Mbps down in its tests over the wireless network. The company has already begun accepting proposals from suppliers and hopes to implement the Super 3G system in Japan by 2009.

The company said that it planned to start experimenting with Super 3G in an indoor setting with only one transmitting antenna and one receiving antenna. From there, NTT DoCoMo plans to expand the experiment by using four Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antennas on both the transmitting and receiving side. The ultimate goal will be not only to achieve 300Mbps down but also to look at how well handovers will be handled between towers.

Camera tech behind the Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is one of the largest sporting events on earth. It attracts hundreds of millions of viewers each year and even more dollars will be spent on advertising. Have you ever wondered what kind of technology is behind the curtains to make it all possible? This year NBC is leaving no inch of the field uncovered. First off there will be "400 on-site production and engineering personnel" and they have put down over 50 miles of fiber optic cable. There will be 35 high end Sony cameras using Cannon lenses to make sure every inch of game play is covered. Cameras will be placed on everything from goal posts to outside the locker-rooms.

Surface used to coordinate Super Bowl Security

If you've been watching the news this week, you might have caught NFL security VP Milton Ahlerich saying that Raymond James Stadium in Tampa will be "one the safest locations you can possibly be" during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and it looks like Microsoft Surface will be a big reason why: it's being used to coordinate security forces around the site.

It's seriously slick -- maps are integrated with planning and voice communications software so the field commanders can immediately assess incident responses and personnel deployments, with the ability to initiate radio contact directly from the interface
