27.10.2008Windows 7 tip: Recycle Bin on your Windows 7 Taskbar
I'm not exactly sure when it became cool to abandon the use of your operating system's desktop, but a growing number of people these days
prefer the "clean" look. Recent releases of Microsoft Windows seem to encourage this. By default, Windows Vista and 7 strip the desktop of all icons
but the Recycle Bin. Try as you may, ignoring this lone icon is impossible. Sure, you can hide it in just a few seconds, but at the cost of losing
quick access to deleted files. You could also drag the Recycle Bin icon to the taskbar, but then it will appear pinned under Windows Explorer --
requiring an extra click to open and offering half the functionality.

15.09.2009Microsoft doesn't recommend creating Vista 'Lite'
WB: But we do. Just remember that SP1 cannot be installed on a vLited Vista install so a preintegrated or
"Reverse Integrated" SP1 ISO is required. As for installing
future Windows updates, as long as Component Cache (which is an Extreme option anyway) is not removed, they'll work just fine. :)
Frustrated with Vista's sluggishness,
some people have been
turning to a utility called
vLite, that strips out components of the operating system deemed unessential.
Although the move does offer frustrated Vista users an option other than going back to XP or switching to a Mac, Microsoft said
Wednesday that it doesn't endorse such changes to Vista's setup.
"Microsoft does not recommend using any tool to strip out
applications from Windows Vista prior to installing it on your system, as it may affect your ability to download future Windows updates and service
packs, and may cause your system to become unstable," the company said in an e-mail to CNET News.com.

31.01.2008Microsoft Says 'EU Version' Of Windows Vista A Dud
David Heiner, Microsoft's
deputy general counsel, said
the company has had few takers
for Windows XP N and Windows
Vista N, noting that " not
a single PC manufacturer has
chosen to license " the
special editions of its
operating systems, which are
available only in Europe. EU
regulators ordered Microsoft
to unbundle Media Player from
some versions of Windows
available for sale in Europe
after charging that the
bundling gave the company an
unfair advantage over media
player products created by
third-party developers.
Heiner was speaking to
FTC officials to urge them to
adopt anti-monopoly measures
that promote competition
rather than restrict consumer
choice. The EU's decision to
order Microsoft to strip out
its own media player
technology from some versions
of Windows has hurt both
Microsoft and its European
customers, Heiner said.
" Costs have been imposed,
but there is little apparent
benefit for anyone ." In
his comments to the FTC,
Heiner blasted the EU for
inserting itself into talks
between Microsoft and
third-party product
manufacturers. " Whether
firms choose to take a
license, and what kind of
products they build with those
licenses, is of course
entirely up to them and
outside the control of either
Microsoft or any antitrust
agency ."

21.05.2007Microsoft files patent for possible taskbar replacement
"A method for managing
windows in a display" would

more formal name, the taskbar.

2006 of what appears to be a
possible alternative for the
decade-old taskbar we all know

Time and time again,
Windows enthusiasts have
jumped on the idea of
replacing the taskbar in the

one of the most revolutionary

center of attention was the

people fantasized about how
the sidebar could become the
taskbar replacement, however
that soon worn-off.

08.01.2008Update: "Vista Capable" trial
The ongoing "Vista Capable" class-action lawsuit against Microsoft took an interesting turn the other day when an expert witness for the plaintiffs
claimed that the Redmond company made more than $1.5 billion through their "Vista Capable" marketing campaign. The origins of the trial itself
are to be found in the months prior to Vista's release when many computers were sold with Windows XP and the promise that they would be capable of
running Vista. However, many of these PCs, which sold at a premium and bore the "Vista Capable" label, turned out to be only capable of running
Vista Basic. Hence, Microsoft is being sued for what many would call false advertising.
