It's Time to Face the Ugly Truth, SP3 or No SP3, the Clock Is Ticking for Windows XP

As 2008 has kicked in, it's now time to face the ugly truth. The clock is ticking for Windows XP. And while Microsoft may view this as a natural stage in the evolution of a product introduced all the way in 2001, a healthy proportion of end-users and businesses will fail to see eye to eye with the company on this one.

Nvidia's CUDA: The End of the CPU?

Lets take a trip back in time way back to 2003 when Intel and AMD became locked in a fierce struggle to offer increasingly powerful processors. In just a few years, clock speeds increased quickly as a result of that competition, especially with Intels release of its Pentium 4.

But the clock speed race would soon hit a wall. After riding the wave of sustained clock speed boosts (between 2001 and 2003 the Pentium 4s clock speed doubled from 1.5 to 3 GHz), users now had to settle for improvements of a few measly megahertz that the chip makers managed to squeeze out (between 2003 and 2005 clock speeds only increased from 3 to 3.8 GHz).

Bill Gates sees processor clock speeds to top out at 10 GHz

Less than a year from his previously announced departure from the company he co-founded, the Bill Gates today outlined his vision and opportunities for Microsoft.

According to Gates, there are currently six trends, which will be determining Microsoft and its product strategy for the years to come. In a rather unusual way, he mentioned the dramatic changes in the way the hardware engines that will be fueling new applications are engineered.

The fact that performance advances have shifted from a pure increase of clock speed to increased parallelism was described by Gates as a challenge. He believes that parallel execution will be the primary way silicon power will be delivered down the road and not so much the fact that there is more clock speed available. According to Gates, microprocessors will get to 10 GHz, but not much further () even 5 to 6 years out...

Radeon HD 2600 XT GDDR3 memory clocks fall short

When AMD first launched the Radeon HD 2600 XT, we were told that versions of the card with GDDR3 memory would have an 800MHz memory clock. Cards are now available on the market, but with the exception of factory "overclocked" models, 700MHz seems to be the memory clock of choice. In fact, every stock-clocked Radeon HD 2600 XT GDDR3 on sale at Neweggincluding models from HIS, MSI, Asus, and Powercolorfeatures a 700MHz memory clock.

When asked whether the memory clock spec for the Radeon HD 2600 XT GDDR3 had changed, AMD provided the following response: Graphics card makers juggle clock speeds all the time, particularly on budget models. However, when everyone seems to have settled on the same slower, 700MHz memory clock, one has to wonder exactly how competitive performance and specs have anything to do with it.

The bottom line is that the Radeon HD 2600 XT GDDR3's memory clock is effectively 100MHz lower than AMD claimed at the product's introduction. Caveat emptor.

OEMs to Continue Shipping XP

If you already own an XP license and are still hesitant to switch to Vista, Microsoft's "downgrade rights" policy, which initially began to be exercised in 2001, may be in your favor if you would still like to purchase a machine running Windows XP after the June 30, 2008 deadline when Microsoft will stop offering the operating system. OEMs such as Dell have said that they still have no plans to stop offering XP as an option:

"Dell has the ability to exercise 'Windows Vista downgrade rights' on your behalf in the factory if your business is still reliant upon Windows XP and you'd prefer to have Windows XP Professional preinstalled on your PCs," according to their new downgrade policy section for XP.
"Downgrade Rights means that anyone with a Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate operating system can downgrade to Windows XP Professional provided they have the media for Windows XP Professional."

2GHz Barcelona to compete with 2.33GHz Clovertown

During a chat with AMDs Steve Demski, product manager for Opteron line, we learned that the companys upcoming Barcelona processors will launch at 2.0GHz and, more interestingly, will compete with Intels Xeon 5345 processor, which is clocked at 2.33GHz.

When asked about the clock frequencies Barcelona will launch at, Felipe Payet, worldwide channel market development manager in AMDs server/workstation product group, told us that we dont think thats necessarily all that low.

Payet then went onto explain the reasoning behind that statement tends to lag in terms of pure clock frequency, but that doesnt mean we lag in performance. Given the fact that we use a HyperTransport and direct connect based design, clock frequency is no longer an indication of performance. ..

Stop The Spread Of Vista SP1 Misinformation

Microsoft wants you to be informed about the current state of the Windows Vista SP1 beta,

"There will be a Windows Vista service pack and our current expectation is that a beta will be made available sometime this year. Service packs are part of the traditional software lifecycle - they're something we do for all Microsoft products as part of our commitment to continuous improvement, and providing early test builds is a standard practice that helps us incorporate customer feedback and improve the overall quality of the product."

"Service packs are just one example of the work we do to constantly improve the Windows experience. We also deliver improvements to Windows via Windows Update, which is an excellent channel for providing our customers with the most significant updates as they happen. And, since Windows Vista launched, we have continued working with partners to improve overall device coverage and application compatibility. There are now more than 2.1 million supported devices and more than 2,000 logoed applications for Windows Vista. We think customers will have a great experience using Windows Vista today."

"Spread the word to stop misinformation."

Inside Windows 7 -- what we know so far

You’d be forgiven for missing it, but Vista turned a year old last month. November 30, 2006, marked the official launch of Vista to the business community: the first part of an odd two-stage liftoff which was followed two months later, on January 30 2007, by the mainstream consumer launch at which Vista became available to one and all.

(Unfortunately for Microsoft, the number of people who bought Vista was much closer to ‘one’ than ‘all’. The majority of ‘sales’ of Vista have been from Microsoft to its OEM partners for pre-loading on new systems, and even then several companies chose to offer buyers a choice between XP and Vista rather than foist the shiny new OS onto the public. Just because they bought a new PC didn’t mean they wanted to ditch their familiar old OS, especially when they had all the drivers and software and everything worked pretty well on the whole, thanks all the same.)

So now the clock is ticking on Windows 7.0, the successor to Vista (which was officially Windows 6.0, following Microsoft’s lead of counting iterations of the NT-based kernel rather than actual client editions).

Is Microsoft 'capable' of stopping Vista Capable lawsuit?

Microsoft would dearly love the Vista Capable lawsuit to just go away, but once the wheels of justice start grinding, can any amount of grease stop the squeaky wheel?

Microsofts Vista Capable class action lawsuit is in the news again, this time because Microsoft wants an appeals court to reverse the decision to have granted the case official class action status.

The whole situation bubbled up because a number of consumers felt duped by the Vista Capable sticker that implied a computer with such a label would be able to run Vista, presumably at least the Home Premium version of Vista with the fancy Aero graphics, instead of the Vista Home Basic version which had no such capability.

MSI Brings Turbo Button to GeForce 8600GT

MSI has announced its new NX8600GT Twin Turbo, which uniquely features dual video BIOSes, each containing different core and memory clock settings. Users can switch between the two clock speed profiles with the press of a turbo button placed on the metal expansion bracket above the DVI ports. With the stock speed profile, the NX8600GT Twin Turbo operates at 540 MHz core, 1400 MHz memory and the shader clock operates at 1450 MHz. A press of the turbo button raises the clock speeds up to 580 MHz core, 1600 MHz memory and the shader clock receives a boost to 1508 MHz. MSI claims a 20% performance boost in 3DMark06 with a press of the turbo button. Other notable features of the NX8600GT Twin Turbo with 256MB of GDDR3 memory include dual dual-link DVI, HDCP compliance, HDMI output capable and component video output.

ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.1 Adds Vista Support

Check Point Software today released ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.1, a Vista-compatible version of its flagship security suite. Vista-compatible versions of ZoneAlarm Antivirus and the popular free ZoneAlarm Firewall are also available.

Past versions of ZoneAlarm's products have relied on Microsoft's TDI (Transport Device Interface) to track network behavior. Windows Vista retains support for TDI, but introduces the new Windows Filtering Platform (WFP). While porting to Vista using TDI would have been easier, Check Point chose to support WFP for this Vista-compatible version. When installed on Windows 2000 and XP, however, version 7.1 will still use TDI.

Check Point is the first major security vendor to make use of the Vista-specific Windows Filtering Platform. Company representatives explained that Microsoft will stop fixing problems with TDI in the future, so by utilizing WFP, users can be prepared for Vista threats...

Japanese group wants Google to stop Street View

Google received another request on Friday to stop its Street View service, this time from a group of Japanese lawyers and professors who say the service violates their right to privacy. Talking to Reuters, Yasuhiko Tajima, a professor of constitutional law at Sophia University in Tokyo, said, "We strongly suspect that what Google has been doing deeply violates a basic right that humans have. It is necessary to warn society that an IT giant is openly violating privacy rights, which are important rights that the citizens have, through this service." Tajima heads the Campaign Against Surveillance Society, a Japanese civilian group that wants Google to stop providing its Japanese Street View service and to delete all saved images.
